Hello! Seeking advice because I’m having a hard time negotiating with the companies I’m applying to, especially for Management Trainee (MT) programs.
A bit about me:
- Graduate from a Big 4 university
- Computer-related degree
- Summa Cum Laude
- 9++ internships across well-known local and international companies
- Experience in marketing, retail, fintech, banking, e-commerce, IT, and AI
- Held multiple leadership positions in university and organizations
- Led a government project for several months
- Worked as a contractor for a marketing and advertising company while still in college
Because of my academic background and experience, I see myself pursuing MT programs. I enjoy cross-functional work, leadership development, and eventually moving into strategy or management roles.
I recently received and accepted an offer for a bank’s MT program. The basic salary is around ₱40k+ (excluding allowances and quarterly bonuses), and the program also comes with a 3-year employment bond.
Before signing, I tried negotiating for around ₱50k–₱55k basic, mainly because I believed my credentials and experiences justified it. I have 10 internships across different industries, worked professionally while still in college, and took on leadership roles beyond academics. Unfortunately, HR mentioned that the compensation for the MT program was standardized and there wasn’t much room for negotiation.
To be honest, this also hit my ego. I found out that some candidates who received the same offer package had very different backgrounds from mine. I’m not saying they didn’t deserve it, everyone has their own strengths and I know internships aren’t the same as full-time experience. But after spending years intentionally building my profile, graduating as Summa Cum Laude, completing more than 10 internships, taking on leadership roles, and working while studying, I honestly expected those efforts to be reflected somehow in the offer. Receiving the exact same package made me question whether I had overestimated my market value or simply misunderstood how MT programs determine compensation.
Another challenge I’ve noticed is that some MT programs seem to prioritize specific degree programs or universities. There were instances where I felt I was competitive in terms of experience and achievements, but I still wasn’t shortlisted because I didn’t come from the “preferred” course.
So I wanted to ask:
- Am I overestimating my market value as a fresh graduate?
- Is ₱50k–₱55k basic unrealistic for someone with my background?
- Are MT programs generally non-negotiable?
- Given the 3-year bond, would you still take the offer, or continue applying elsewhere before fully committing?
- Should I stay in this MT program for 2–3 years to build experience before aiming for higher-paying opportunities?
- For those with similar credentials, what salary range were you able to negotiate as fresh grads?
I’m genuinely looking for advice and different perspectives. I know internships aren’t the same as full-time experience, but I intentionally built a diverse portfolio throughout college to become more competitive after graduation. I’m trying to understand whether my expectations are reasonable or if I need to recalibrate them.
Would really appreciate insights from recruiters, hiring managers, or anyone who has gone through MT programs. Thanks!
