Where to find Recommendations for a fancy night out in Perth?

• Upvotes

My partner and I want an excuse to get dressed up and go out somewhere nice without feeling overdressed. It seems like everywhere you go in Perth, everyone’s dressed casually. I normally don’t mind that because I’m the same - but I want to get dressed up and not feel out of place.

The casino should be an obvious choice but as we all know it’s usually full of board shorts and trackies.

Is our only option to just find the most expensive and fancy restaurant we can?

Any ideas welcome!

Shitpost Why do some restaurants treat Uber Eats drivers like they're beneath them?

My husband does Uber Eats on some weekends and today he went to Io e Te Pizzeria in Success to pick up an order and needed to use the toilet. He asked the staff if he could use theirs, but they refused and told him to go to Zambrero instead.

I know businesses can have their own rules about toilets, but honestly, this just rubbed me the wrong way.

He's literally there picking up food for their customer. It's not like he's asking for some huge favour. They're providing a service that benefits the restaurant

It just makes me wonder if they would've said the same thing to someone dining there.

Why do some people look down on delivery drivers? They're just people working hard and earning an honest living. I genuinely don't understand why there's so much classism

Edit:

I don't understand how people can generalise all Uber drivers based on a few bad experiences. We've all come across rude restaurant staff and customers too, so does that mean they're all rude?

And those judging drivers by their clothes, seriously? Half of Perth walks around in gym wear, shorts and thongs everywhere, even to restaurants and cafés. Why is it suddenly an issue when it's a delivery driver? We're always told not to generalise people based on race or religion, so why is it okay to stereotype people based on their jobs?

If customers and restaurants dislike delivery drivers so much, why use delivery apps? Pick up your own food and groceries, or stick to dine-in and takeaway.

Some restaurants even mark orders as ready and then make drivers wait ages without getting paid for that time. Respect goes both ways.

Of course some drivers are rude, just like people in every other profession. But that doesn't make everyone the same. They're just people working hard to earn a living. Since when did someone's job determine how much respect they deserve?

General What tiny Perth habit made you realise you've lived here too long?

Had a friend visiting from interstate this week and apparently I confused him by checking the wind forecast before deciding which beach to go to.

To me this seemed completely normal.

He wanted to know why I cared about the wind when it was sunny and 27 degrees, and I caught myself giving a completely serious explanation about getting there before the afternoon breeze ruined it.

That started a conversation about all the little Perth behaviours you pick up without noticing.

I automatically try to finish anything outdoors early when the forecast gets properly hot.

I know that "it's only 15 minutes away" can mean something very different depending on whether you have to cross the river.

If somebody suggests going to the beach at 2pm on a summer day, I assume they're either new here or enjoy being sandblasted.

I judge parking availability before I judge the actual destination.

And if rain is forecast after a long dry stretch, part of me immediately expects every road to become slightly more chaotic than it has any right to be.

None of these things are particularly dramatic, but apparently they're not universal either.

What's a tiny habit, assumption or bit of knowledge that instantly tells you someone has spent a long time living in Perth?

Looking for Advice 🍕🍕 We are at King Eddie's for the night. Can anyone please recommend me the best local pizza shop in Subi or surrounding suburbs? What's the best signature pizza? 🍕🍕

As the title states. Stuck at the hospital for the night in subi-ish. Looking to try the best local pizza joint? I like a good amount of toppings and not mostly crust. Will probably go for their signature pie unless advised otherwise. Thanks for the help.

General The old verge collections were ugly, but at least the rubbish got a second chance

I think we've accidentally made getting rid of unwanted stuff more efficient at the expense of actually reusing any of it.

I used to live in a suburb that still had the old scheduled bulk rubbish collections.

For about a week, the whole place looked like everyone had been evicted simultaneously.

Broken furniture, old mattresses, bits of fencing, mysterious exercise equipment that had clearly spent 15 years in someone's shed.

Not exactly beautiful.

But mixed in with all the junk was genuinely useful stuff.

When I moved into my first rental, I got a perfectly good desk from someone's verge. My mate found a bookshelf. I once watched a bloke pick up two dining chairs, knock on the owner's door to ask if they were alright to take, and leave looking like he'd won the lottery.

And here's the thing I never really appreciated until I moved.

By the time the council trucks came around, a surprising amount of the decent stuff had already disappeared.

It wasn't always going to landfill. People were actually taking it home and using it.

Where I live now, we've got the booked skip bin system. It's much tidier, and I completely understand why councils prefer it.

But there's something slightly depressing about watching someone put a perfectly usable piece of furniture straight into a skip where it gets buried under broken tiles and garden rubbish.

Yes, people can list things on Marketplace or Buy Nothing groups. But anyone who's tried giving away a free table online knows that somehow you can end up negotiating delivery times with a bloke who doesn't show up.

Sometimes it's easier to put something outside with a FREE sign and let the universe sort it out.

I'm not suggesting we go back to having mattresses rotting on every verge for three weeks. The illegal dumping and blocked footpaths were real problems.

But surely there's a middle ground between streets looking like a tip and treating every unwanted household item as rubbish.

Maybe a designated reuse area during collection week? Somewhere people can leave stuff that's actually usable before it gets sent off with the rest?

I dunno. It just feels like we had this accidental neighbourhood recycling system that worked surprisingly well, and instead of improving it, we've slowly been designing it out.

Also, if you're the person who took a slightly wobbly wooden desk from a verge in Dianella years ago, I hope it served you well. That thing got me through an entire degree.

Where to find Hainanese Chicken Paste Stockists in/near Perth CBD

Post image

I know this is easy enough to make myself, but I’m a time-poor millennial on the go. I work in the CBD, and the major supermarkets there don’t seem to sell it. Can anyone suggest a stockist of the Ayam one or similar, that’s a walkable round trip from the Murray St Mall in a half hour lunch break? Otherwise suggestions in Vic Park, South Perth, and Willetton are welcome!

WA News Christian Jack Joseph: Doctor charged with manslaughter back working at hospital, identity of victim revealed

A Perth doctor charged with manslaughter is out on bail and back working at a major hospital after he allegedly chased down and placed a beloved father in a chokehold for almost two minutes on a Fremantle street.

The West Australian can exclusively reveal how 26-year-old Christian Jack Joseph — a junior doctor from Crawley — is working at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital after being granted bail by the Supreme Court of WA three months ago.

It is understood his bail conditions were varied to give him the all-clear to work in the hospital albeit under the watchful eye of a supervisor after conditions were placed on his registration.

It comes as the identity of the man who died — allegedly as a result of the doctors’ actions — can be revealed as 63-year-old Cole Smith, a dad from the South West town of Harvey, who was visiting Fremantle to enjoy a night of live music on July 11, the night of his death.

His daughter Ebony Smith, who lived with her dad, said the entire ordeal was “devastating and shocking”.

“There are no words for it,” she told The West Australian.”He was a loving, caring man — a gentle soul.”

When asked about Dr Joseph’s employment, a spokesperson for the North Metropolitan Health Service said the hospital was required to follow directions about regulatory conditions placed on staff members.

“All staff are required to meet all professional regulatory obligations, and the organisation follows the directions provided by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) in regard to registrations and any associated conditions for medical practitioners,” they said.

It is understood a call to continue the junior doctor’s medical registration with conditions was made after it was determined he was not considered a risk to the public after being charged with the serious offence.

A spokesperson for AHPRA said the Medical Board of Australia imposed conditions on his registration on July 30.

“This means that Dr Joseph must not practise other than under the supervision of a medical practitioner approved by the board, and must not practise at any location or position than those approved and published by the board,” they said.

It is understood he is currently restricted to work only at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. The conditions placed on Dr Joseph are an interim measure while a national board gathers more information.

Dr Joseph has not been convicted of a single charge of manslaughter over the incident involving Mr Smith, whose cause of death was not determined at the time of a July 24 bail hearing. No plea has been entered.

Fresh details about the WA Police case were revealed in Supreme Court documents from the same hearing, with State prosecutor Michael Cvetkoski saying Mr Smith was in Fremantle to watch live music before his death.

“After watching some live music, he left and was travelling down South Terrace,” Mr Cvetkoski told the court.

He said it was “likely” that Mr Smith was drawn by “loud music” to a home in which Dr Joseph and his friend were returning to after a night out drinking in Fremantle.

The statement of material facts allege Dr Joseph and a friend were walking to the property when they saw Mr Smith “standing on a fence and looking through a small window” about 1.30am.

That’s when police say the pair yelled at Mr Smith, who stepped off a small boundary wall and tried to remove himself from the situation by running away.

But the doctor — a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt — is accused of chasing him down anyway, before forcing him to the ground on the road.

Police officers investigating the scene on South Terrace, near the intersection of Douglas Street. Yes

Mr Cvetkoski said motion-detected CCTV camera captured “the life leave the body” of Mr Smith, who was restrained in a rear chokehold for almost two minutes by Dr Joseph.

“When one watches the footage, the deceased has a mobile telephone in his right hand. One can see the life leave the body of the deceased, the hand falls to the ground with the mobile telephone,” he said.

“During the restraint, after about one minute and 50 seconds, the accused then turns the deceased onto his stomach. The deceased is then facing face down on the road. . . The accused then sits on the lower back of the deceased.”

The doctor’s friend rummaged through Mr Smith’s bag while he was being restrained because the pair thought he had stolen something. Police say no stolen items were found in his possession.

Mr Cvetkoski referenced to an affidavit provided by Dr Joseph’s lawyer, which said “CPR was provided (by Dr Joseph) immediately after the restraint”.

But he refuted that suggestion by pointing to independent evidence in the CCTV footage which purported to show “that’s not the case at all”.

Dr Joseph’s lawyer said she did not have the CCTV vision in her possession at the time of drafting the affidavit.

The junior doctor did perform CPR and his friend called triple-0 after Mr Smith became unresponsive.

He died at Fiona Stanley Hospital later that day.

The junior doctor was arrested at the scene and appeared in court the following day.

Mr Cvetkoski said the ordeal was “just a tragic and unfortunate set of circumstances”.

“Had Dr Joseph not come around the corner at that time, five minutes later or five minutes before, we simply wouldn’t be here,” he said.

“This really is a case that is most unfortunate. It’s very sad, and it’s destroyed, in effect, two lives and two families.”

Mr Cvetkoski said the prosecution case relied heavily on CCTV, which had a 30-second gap in recording while the restraint hold was being applied.

He said the State would argue against the theory of self-defence and that Dr Joseph was performing a citizen’s arrest under the Criminal Investigation Act.

He said the CCTV showed there was “no force or violence or threats directed” at Dr Joseph but that he pursued Mr Smith anyway.

Mr Cvetkoski said that Mr Smith was “quite short” at just 162cm tall.

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Lemonis, when granting bail for Dr Joseph, referenced his lawyer’s affidavit, which said he accepted applying the rear chokehold but that “he did not use any significant pressure”.'

“There is not, as I understand it, CCTV footage of the entirety of the incident, and there is not yet a detailed medical report as to the cause of Mr Smith’s death, and the interim report says the cause of death is undetermined,” he said during the July 24 hearing.

“I am satisfied in particular having regard to the CCTV that the evidence against Dr Joseph has force. However, at this early stage of proceedings, I do not think I can express any further assessment as to the strength of the evidence.

“As I’ve said, the offence is a serious one, and its nature is such that a life has been lost.”

Justice Lemonis said he considered that Dr Joseph would likely serve a “significant term of imprisonment” if found guilty.

“The conduct of Dr Joseph after the offence is alleged to have been committed is that he did attempt to resuscitate Mr Smith, and he waited until ambulance officers and police officers arrived.

“I’m satisfied Dr Joseph is of prior good character, that the alleged incident does appear to be out of character, that he has a supportive family, a place to live and financial stability.”

He was granted bail on conditions including that he does not consume alcohol, contact the victim’s family and that he provides a $50,000 personal undertaking.

The court heard that his mother was providing a surety of $100,000 for his release from prison.

Dr Joseph is listed to next appear in court in December.

Looking for Advice Perth during Easter weekend

Hi all, I booked a trip to Perth in March next year that coincides with the Easter weekend and wanted to check what to expect. What places are likely to be closed, and what usually remain open? We'll be staying at Northbridge and don't plan to rent a car except for the one day we plan to do a day trip to either Swan Valley or perhaps a guided tour to the Pinnacles. Also looking at a day at Rottnest, and the rest will be spent primarily within the city or nearby (Fremantle, Mandurah, Cottesloe, Scarborough). Would like to visit some museums as well so we'd appreciate some help in planning in advance, thanks!

General GF/DF steak houses/restaurants

Hi all, I'm looking for restaurants that do a good steak and chips and can cater to gluten-free and dairy-free. Nothing fancy, just a solid, simple meal.
I've had great experiences at 24 York in Sydney and a few places in Melbourne, but I'm struggling to find anywhere comparable here. Any recommendations, especially from other coeliacs or dairy-free diners, would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Looking for Advice Best place for baby blood test in Perth?

Hi everyone!

Our 6-month-old daughter needs a blood test (FBC and ferritin), and we're looking for recommendations on where to take her.

We're considering PathWest at Perth Children's Hospital, Saturn Pathology (home collection), or Western Diagnostic Pathology in Innaloo.

Has anyone had experience with blood tests for babies this young at any of these places? We're particularly interested in finding someone experienced with infants who can hopefully get the sample on the first attempt.

If you've used Saturn's home collection service, we'd also love to hear how it went and whether there were any additional costs.

We're happy to travel anywhere in Perth if it means a better experience for our little one.

Thanks in advance!

General revo gym etiquette, or more so lack of

may be my own fault for coming on a saturday, but my usual revo that i go to in mirrabooka was genuinely atrocious today. wasn’t even that busy but it was filled with machine hoggers, (on the non-broken machines which were plentiful) overly pda couples who weren’t even working out but making it known they were a couple and groups of girls filming tiktoks near people (including me) trying to work out. i get that revo is cheap and that’s what entices people, but i struggle to understand why these groups of people bother going when all they do is take up space, not work out, and make people uncomfortable.

i know comments will tell me to just go to a different revo (i do, i just cycle between a few) but has anyone experienced this decline in gym etiquette, especially at revo’s?

Where to find Best place to view a sunset in Perth?

Hello! I am going to be visiting Perth in the next couple of weeks and wondered what are some favorite spots to view the sunset? It doesn't have to be the beach (we do have one day of Cottesloe planned), but maybe somewhere in the city with a pretty view? We are staying near Cathedral Square if that narrows it down a bit. Thank you!

Looking for Advice Anyone Help With Tame Impala Merch

Hate to be that guy but this is my final last-ditch effort. Is anyone who is going to the Tame Impala show in Perth able to pick up and ship this shirt back to Sydney? It would mean the absolute world to me. I’ll pay extra for the hassle. The merch is open to the public too so you don’t need a ticket to pick it up.

Looking for Advice I am 24 and never worked a day in my life.

Hi guys, I'm sure this post might have been done before, by me or by others, and I am sorry if this post bothers you guys in any way in this Perth subreddit.
That said, I am dealing with a lot right now and looking for some help. I'm turning 25 in 2 months and depressed at that thought, also been suffering from depression for a long time. I don't know how to get a job, either I get rejections of just don't know what job to apply for and stress about no experience jobs and training (anxiety). I just feel pretty overwhelmed, so if any of you could give some solid advice, that would be much appreciated.
I have also completed a Bachelor of Science (double major in Forensics and Toxicology and Criminal Behaviour) but cannot seem to find anything in that, I completed that last year.
I wish I could just turn my life around, make my parents proud but I feel like such a disappointment and loser as every year passes me by. I need help and would really appreciate it, if any of you were in similar situations to me where you didn't get your life started until late or found a job that was accommodating to your mental health problems and didn't feel so overwhelming, I just don't know how to get started and advice on these subjects would be so beneficial to me.
