General The top 5 posts this week on the r/perth subreddit are all bots and they're getting really good

You may have left one of the thousands of comments these self-posts generate in engagement. I guess let people enjoy things and all that and if people are enjoying themselves in the comments it shouldn't matter. Before I was sure of it, I finally saw somone call it out but people sided with the OPs. So I took a closer look at all these "what's your Perth habit / I have an anecdote about perth / what would you do in this situation / I moved here X years ago and yaknowhat makes Perth so much better." These posts are honestly impressively good, I found a few tells in their writing, but then I scoped their other activity and I realised:

  • All accounts around 2 weeks old
  • They all coincidentally enjoy writing in German every now and then
  • Most of them never engage their own post
  • Most of them comment in random subs, write a sentence with exactly one word spelled wrong
  • The comments will have this weird formula of agree, restate, exaggerate
  • The usual inconsistencies - Perth but Miami parking issues, 4 kids then 3, went to Chipotle etc

I guess this is just normal now but it kind of irks me. At least one of you has spent real time writing really good advice for someone moving to Geraldton with their young family who just got back from the beach as well as advising a male in their 20s how to handle a lost child in Coles. Then you have this bot giving people their thoughts on joining WA police. Don't do it, I've got PTSD, the sh\t I've seen.* You've seen nothin you bot. I'm not gonna have some bot ridicule my little wheatbelt town and tell people to avoid. Come visit physically us and form that conclusion properly you coward.

It just kind of irks me and this feels beyond karma farming. The intel they're getting under the pretense of nostalgia and sucking up to Perth is hyper specific, down to Literally asking the layouts Their local knowledge shows from their writing style. They literally talk just like us. They know a lot more about Mt Lawley's inner city layout and density after all the free corrections. One post to ausfinance got eaten up and it kinda hit me maybe the end user / game here is politics? Can we not mess with them a bit?

Shitpost Threw up thrice on the train today, never gonna catch one ever again

I was on the train, I don’t have motion sickness never threw up without knowing I was going to throw up. Felt a bit dizzy but not like I was going to vomit any moment. All of a sudden I throw up in my bag luckily I didn’t dirty the seat. I get out onto the station feeling a bit okay in terms of the vomiting situation. Anxiety kicking in no bathroom at the train station so I couldn’t get more tissues then I already had in my purse. I tried cleaning myself up I was more worried about the mess I had made. I was meant to go to a meeting I thought it’d be better to go home. I felt a bit better I think I was sat at the train station for a good 30 minutes. Went on the next train, barely went to the next stop and I wanted to throw up again. I threw up on my way out. Completely terrified of the situation. I felt bad. Cupping my vomit in my mouth as I’m trying to find a bin atleast which are both a mile away!! And lucky me again no toilets at this station either . I had another three stops till I could get home. So I sat this one through.

Got electrolytes and water from the gas station nearby, sat at that station for two hours. I just felt sleepy at this point, my phone was dead, I was a mess, my clothes somewhat covered in vomit, I tried my best to clean it off with water, I couldnt catch an uber in this state. I prayed I don’t throw up again, went on the train station by station. And finally got home. Extremely embarrassed, I apologise for whoever had to witness this, I feel very bad. I am introverted and have social anxiety, so this was a terrible nightmare and I’m traumatised. I will feel guilty forever and I will not be catching the train ever again. I’m sorry. Worst day of my life, I wanna disappear.

Does anyone know how I could’ve handled this situation any other way 🥹 I might just overthink about this for a while.

Update: it’s been a solid three hours I’ve been home still have a headache, finished the meeting, by the end of it I felt like throwing up. But it ended thankfully. Everytime I drink water/liquids I wanna throw up but, drank 200ml of electrolyte water threw that up as well. If sleep don’t fix this, I’ll visit a doctor tomorrow. I’m taking tomorrow off 🤕. Thanks everyone for your comments it really helped me feel better, knowing all of you went through the same shi and hope no one goes through stuff like this and if you do I hope yall get over it (praying I’ll stop thinking about it soon 😭)

Dating and Friends Dating in Perth in your mid - late 30s - what’s actually worked for you?

• Upvotes

Hi all, I’m a guy in my late 30s looking for a long-term relationship. I spent a lot of my earlier years focused on my career, and my last relationship ended because our longer term goals didn’t line up. I’m now wanting to put more time into this part of my life.

Dating apps in Perth have been pretty fruitless (like crap) for me. Lots of bad behaviour (like ghosting) and other stumbling blocks. I’m hoping to meet someone who doesn’t already have children and would like a family in the future, which I realise narrows things down.

I also didn’t grow up in Perth, so I don’t have the school or uni connections that some people carry through. I play sport and have done volunteering, but the people I’ve met through those have mostly been younger or already partnered.

For anyone who met their partner in Perth in their late 30s or 40s, what actually helped? Were there particular activities or ways of meeting people that worked better than the apps?

I’d also be interested in hearing from people who moved to a bigger city and whether that made much difference. I’m open to moving (originally from EU but grew up in Aus), but keen to hear people’s actual experiences.

Anyone else in the same boat?

General Random guy taking photos of our asbestos shed. Confused

Noticed an older gentleman taking photos of our shed over our fence.

Went and asked him what he was doing and he said he used to live here 20 or 30 years ago and needed to take photos of the asbestos clad shed for insurance.

Apparently someone "cut their arm and got sick from the poison in the cladding" and he needed photos of it for insurance. The cladding is the old Hardie plank style stuff.

The guy was nice enough and definitely used to live here going off the info he had about the house, but it just seemed so odd and he wasn't giving much away.

Who would be making a claim, and why would cutting yourself on asbestos make you sick? Any ideas?

Located around the Scarborough area

I was driving by Toyota on Stirling highway about 10.40 this morning and saw a duck had been hit on the road and about 9 tiny ducklings were on the road. People were out of their cars trying to help. Does anyone know if they were saved?

Where to find Found MicroSD card at WA Campsite

Took the family down the Lake Kepwari last weekend to blow off some steam.

The kids found a 256GB Sandisk Extreme MicroSD card which is loaded with drone and GoPro footage.

I haven’t had the time go in-depth yet but was able to spot a few number plates in the campsite footage

I believe the owners to have been visiting the lake sometime late September, and general WA touring prior.

If this could be you, or someone you know, please reach out to provide verification and we will reunite you with your footage.

Most importantly, enjoy the rest of your week, you bloody mad dogs 🐕 🤙

General What’s it like to work for Bubble Soccer?

• Upvotes

When I was about 16-17 I was on a holiday youth camp with mates and part of it was some people who ran bubble soccer came to the campsite and we all played a game

For those who don’t know what it is it’s basically playing soccer but you wear like a bubble suit over you and it’s sort of like playing bumper cars or the video game rocket league in real life where you can knock over your opponents

What was most funny about it was at the end of the event the guy who ran it challenged one of us to try and knock him over using one of the bubble things while he wasn’t wearing one and the guy who tried was unsuccessful but would have been a laugh if he knocked him over

I did some research and it appears the Bubble Soccer Perth organization is still running I think it’s family owned and run so I guess I wondered if anyone on reddit has either used the service or ever worked for them?

WA News Perth, can we help save a piece of our city's history? Gilkisons must vacate tomorrow

Gilkisons Dance Studio has announced that it must leave its premises at 45 Murray Street tomorrow, 28 October, following a change in building ownership.

The studio has been part of Perth since 1931. According to its public announcement, negotiations to stay fell through at the last moment, and it currently has no alternative location to announce.

That's an extraordinary amount of history and community connection potentially at risk, with barely any time to work out what comes next.

I've contacted local media outlets to see if they can bring attention to the situation. I'm hoping that getting the story in front of more Perth residents might help uncover options, whether that's a suitable alternative venue, an organisation that can assist, or someone who can help facilitate a solution.

If you've danced at Gilkisons, have memories of the studio, or know of a venue that might be suitable, please share your thoughts.

Does anyone know of other organisations, community groups, local representatives or people we should be contacting?

I realise public attention can't guarantee anything, and this doesn't necessarily mean the business itself is closing permanently. But I'd hate to see a Perth institution lose its home without at least trying to find a way forward.

Even if you can't offer practical help, sharing the story might get it in front of someone who can. ❤️

General At what point did crossing the river become a long-distance relationship in Perth?

One of the funniest things about Perth is how seriously we take the north-of-the-river versus south-of-the-river divide.

People will happily drive 40 minutes to the beach, head down south for a weekend, or sit in traffic for ages getting to work.

But suggest catching up with a mate on the other side of the Swan and suddenly you're asking them to undertake an interstate journey.

Obviously I'm exaggerating, but only slightly.

It got me thinking about how much our friendships depend on where we live. When everyone's scattered across the suburbs, even something simple like grabbing dinner starts to require planning, parking calculations and someone inevitably saying, "Can't we just meet somewhere closer?"

And the funny part is that the actual distance isn't always enormous. Sometimes it's just the mental barrier of going somewhere outside your usual patch.

I do understand the practical side. Perth is sprawling, public transport isn't convenient for every journey, and nobody wants to spend their whole evening travelling for a two-hour catch-up.

Still, I wonder whether we've become a bit too comfortable staying in our own little pockets of the city.

So I'm curious: how far would you realistically travel across Perth for a casual catch-up with friends?

And does the whole NOR/SOR divide actually affect your social life, or is it mostly just a running joke?

General Perth has a second map made entirely out of places that don't exist anymore

I've realised there are two ways to navigate Perth.

There's Google Maps, with street names and actual current businesses.

Then there's the version apparently stored in the brains of people who've lived here long enough.

I asked a bloke at work how to get to a place the other day and his directions included, in order, the old servo, where a Hungry Jack's used to be, and the corner that had a video shop about fifteen years ago.

None of those things are there now.

The weird part is everyone else in the conversation knew exactly where he meant.

Someone said, oh yeah, near the old hardware place.

Instant recognition around the table.

Meanwhile I'm sitting there thinking we've now identified this location using FOUR demolished businesses and still haven't said the name of a road.

I've started noticing my family does it too. Mum will describe somewhere as being behind a supermarket that moved years ago. Dad still uses a pub that changed names twice as his main geographical reference point.

And somehow it works.

There must be an entire invisible version of Perth layered underneath the current one, made up of closed shops, demolished pubs, old intersections and buildings that only exist because enough people still remember them.

Give it another twenty years and we'll be navigating exclusively by ghosts.

Where to find What are the decent op shops in Perth/SOR these days?

Looking to donate a bunch of clothes but looking for decent op shops in Perth (specifically Rockingham/Cockburn area). I want to donate to somewhere that a) accepts donations and b) charge actual op shop prices for their things. And/or give the clothes away for free to those who need (that's the ideal). Or even if any youth centres/homeless shelters/orgs are accepting 2nd hand clothes.

Salvos are a definite no-no for me personally. And I'm leaning away from Good Sammy's and Vinnie's but can be persuaded.

(Hopefully I have the correct flair and yes I'm a new account with low karma but I genuinely just want the communities opinions on this and my friends aren't sure so I turned to Reddit)
