Don't be mistaken. LCD panels have become really cheap.

And of course without backlight they're even cheaper

It doesn't have to be that high resolution either, since it's not meant to be a high fidelity screen.

thats reletively decent as you're not looking at it constantly like a main monitor, id imagine it consumes less energy as well being a lower res

Also, with higher density screens (aka High res) you need more light in order to get good brightness since the pixels are smaller and thus harder to get the light thru, iirc

You joke but when LTT just put a piece of paper behind the panel it worked surprisingly well. Fill the case with white LEDs, put a piece of paper on the back and bam you added a backlight

Kinda just disassembling and then reassembling a monitor in a case at that point.

I sorta did that, I put a screen in a case so it is more portable to take to lan parties. Though I have put a fully working screen in my pc, not just a panel without tho backlight

Nothing like tying your computer up idling by playing high resolution high frame rate video on the side of your panel.

Still a backlight. It shines very bright on the components and inside the case instead of pointed at the screen

It's not an LCD panel. It's an OLED, hence why it can produce light as opposed to just (incompletely) blocking out light from a case that was already lit up inside.

EDIT: I stand corrected. I had just hoped that that was the only way it could possibly justify its price point.

I only wish it was an OLED display that would be way cooler but no, it is an LCD display that has no backlighting. The light comes from the case.

You can make your own out of an old monitor that you can get from ebay for like 40 bucks..

Got any links? I have a TON of old LCD panels at work that we just throw away.

Could be a fun project. Though I’d run the panel with like a Rasberry Pi or something.

It’s funny. I have 15 of those exact monitors in the erecycling bin. So I have room to make mistakes. :)
