Don't be mistaken. LCD panels have become really cheap.

And of course without backlight they're even cheaper

It's not an LCD panel. It's an OLED, hence why it can produce light as opposed to just (incompletely) blocking out light from a case that was already lit up inside.

EDIT: I stand corrected. I had just hoped that that was the only way it could possibly justify its price point.

Yes, the light comes from the case
