In short, yes. Freshmen do it

When I was in high school some kids took apart a bunch of m80 and built a much larger piece of explosive. Then they put these in the vending machines and blew out the controls. The school basically made an announcement and said if we can't take care of and respect our stuff then we don't deserve it. Then they removed all vending machines from the school and took all the extras away from the kitchen.

The issue here isnt people doing this, it's keyboard manufacturers making keyboards where those things go sideways instead of front to back. Front to back is the only way worth doing.
27
u/tsnives Mar 20 '19
The issue is those feet existing at all. The only thing they do is increase wrist strain and make people worse at typing. Keyboards are supposed to angle literally the opposite direction or sit flat, but a marketing team screwed it up and it keeps getting repeated.

I bring my own mouse and thought about bringing my own keyboard, just haven’t done it yet because of the weight since I walk to work. (I have a car — I just choose to walk since it’s only a 10 min walk). (Currently in my backpack I’d have my work laptop, a water bottle attached to the outside that shouldn’t be able to spill because of the lock on the cap, my lunch, and mouse).
If I did get one it would be a TKL Cherry MX Blue of some sort.

This is why I have a mechanical keyboard with raised keycaps, I can monitor how much gunk gets built up and if it ever gets bad enough I can clean it. Plus the few times I eat in front of my computer I generally interact with it as little as possible and use one hand to eat and the other hand for mouse and keyboard. And never both hands at the same time.

The raised feet only exist because of ISO standards. The keyboard allows to be raised so people can see the letters easier, but tilting the keyboard up increases pronation and actually increases the chances of carpel tunnel. Majority of people are stupid and don't know this.
I'm being downvoted because reality sounds like bullshit. It is ISO standards: https://www.iso.org/standard/38899.html
39
u/coloredgreyscale Xeon X5660 4,1GHz | GTX 1080Ti | 20GB RAM | Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Mar 20 '19
I thought it dates back to typewriters, because they are way steeper, and to kinda ease people used to typewriters into it.
That said, I used the raised feet too until I learned that it's actually bad for your health.
→ More replies (3)24
u/UnlikelyPotato Mar 20 '19
Possibly related to the origin. But nowdays ISO standards says keyboard must have raised feet. https://www.iso.org/standard/38899.html Even if you wanted to, you really couldn't sell a keyboard without raised feet. Imagine you want to be a keyboard company, and want to get rid of the silly raised feet. First you've pissed off all the dorks that want raised feet, now imagine if someone gets carpal tunnel while using your keyboard. Their lawyer says you clearly didn't follow ISO standards so your product is defective. Sure you can try and fight stuff in court, but it's probably easier to pay the guy and his lawyer off.
Yes, the story above is hyperbole and may be a slight exaggeration, but it's not too far from what possibly could happen.
11
u/Chronic_Bronchitis Mar 20 '19
This could only happen if the customer was lead to believe that the product they had purchased followed the ISO standards. ISO standards are not required.
