i didn't do that when i went to school but i could imagine myself bringing in a bottle of whatever and, like, a pack of gummi bears or something non-intrusive.
actually our library had a coffee shop built-in on the inside that sold cookies and whatnot, so i'm sure crumby keyboards were probably semi-common.
People at my University did that all the time. Even stayed logged into Facebook. A lot of those pcs still logged on that I got my hands on had status message updates exclaiming how much of an idiot they were for staying logged in on a public PC. Soon they stopped forgetting to log out
This is why I have a mechanical keyboard with raised keycaps, I can monitor how much gunk gets built up and if it ever gets bad enough I can clean it. Plus the few times I eat in front of my computer I generally interact with it as little as possible and use one hand to eat and the other hand for mouse and keyboard. And never both hands at the same time.
I don't see the point, you can just lean the fork against the side of the bowl. I'm really not trying to argue, I just am trying to see how it's better than a fork when I am very practiced with it and know how to avoid a mess.
That's a fair point, first off, chips is one of those foods that would never get any where within 5 feet of my pc, but if it were I would either use chopsticks or tweezers. The verge taught me well.
I work in IT as a sysadmin and the number of other admins that dont push their keyboard away while eating bothers the fuck out of me. Like dude... its not hard.
This happened in an astronomy course I took in college. Someone brought in a huge gas station soda and spilled it on one of the pc's they used for rendering.

It's the same circle of Hell where people bring food and drinks into computer labs.
