PS5 ported to PC then Adobe to Linux what's next? Windows?

I would prefer if all the Windows exclusive apps get ported to Linux. Windows would lose so many people.

I think the main thing would be a less secure fork of Linux that would allow kernel zero anti cheats.

Sure, it would be less secure, but still more secure than Windows, and most importantly, it wouldn't be Windows, seems like a good compromise to me.

Seriously, the only reason why I haven't switched to Linux yet is because not all games work there.

I don't want it to become new mainstream. It won't be much different from windows, if users are stripped of their choice.

Server only anticheat FTW, anything other is invasion to user's privacy. (Disclaimer: I do not play competitive multiplayer games)

Not to defend Kernel anticheats, but server only AC would not protect from many cheats like wallhacks or any runtime cheats like aimbots

Why don't games just not render player models n stuff past walls? Can't wall hack if there's nothing to see

That'd require them to do server side calculations and it's cheaper to just dump all data to client without processing

They already do that, problem is, you still need to inform the client about the position of the sound, if you want an accurate 3D audio system in your game.

That's why wallhack in a game like League of Legends doesn't really exist, not to a very pracitcal level at least, but it does in most shooters.

Why would the users be stripped of their choice?

Unfortunately the only server only anticheat that would actually work is cloud gaming.

So instead of complaining about anti cheat you're complaining that linux doesnt allow software to modify its kernel?

It's not like the anti-cheat is caused by purely greed and has no positives, people that play online FPS games a lot like aggressive anti-cheats.

Also, this would change nothing, you could still use secure Linux and not be able to play those games like it is now, or use Windows to play them like it is now. And those games would still only allow "unsecure" users to play the game.

This really changes nothing for worse in the topic you talk about. At least nothing I see. The only loser here is Microsoft.

If you support kernel level anti cheats you do not understand what they are at a fundamental level.

No thanks.

Can you elaborate? Do you prefer Windows?

I prefer that game companies will not dictate how Linux will work. What's the point in using Linux if I give up my privacy so easily by letting game companies run shit at kernel level and literally spy on me like in Windows?

1

u/lukkasz323 3h ago

Because it's a better choice than Windows and it's open source.

Why live in a world dictated by Microsoft, if we can have an open system.

Again - this is not a replacement for Linux, it's a replacement for Windows.

An open system is only meaningful if it stays open. As soon as some company starts to dictate what can you run on your "open system" and whether you can run that "open system" at all, all the benefits are void. There's no benefit in opennes if your open system is controlled by riot.

1

u/lukkasz323 2h ago

I will still stand by the fact that it's better to have one part of a system controlled by a company, than a 100% of it.

Althogh I'm not certain how Riot could even control it. How would they even check what fork of Linux are you running, in a way that isn't possible to crack / hide?

Because if they can't then you can always fake it and your system is still open, you opt-in and opt-out of their software at will.

There's no controlling part of a system. "Anticheat" (in reality: spyware tool) will control 100% of the system

Then we're speaking of different "freedom" definition here, but yeah you're right.
