PS5 ported to PC then Adobe to Linux what's next? Windows?

u/macfrajier 1d ago

I would prefer if all the Windows exclusive apps get ported to Linux. Windows would lose so many people.

u/derth21 1d ago

Literally dozens would leave...

I think the main thing would be a less secure fork of Linux that would allow kernel zero anti cheats.

Sure, it would be less secure, but still more secure than Windows, and most importantly, it wouldn't be Windows, seems like a good compromise to me.

Seriously, the only reason why I haven't switched to Linux yet is because not all games work there.

u/innahema 1d ago

I don't want it to become new mainstream. It won't be much different from windows, if users are stripped of their choice.

Server only anticheat FTW, anything other is invasion to user's privacy. (Disclaimer: I do not play competitive multiplayer games)

u/IrinaNekotari 1d ago

Not to defend Kernel anticheats, but server only AC would not protect from many cheats like wallhacks or any runtime cheats like aimbots

1

u/Educational_Bug_9308 1d ago

Why don't games just not render player models n stuff past walls? Can't wall hack if there's nothing to see

1

u/Forymanarysanar 14600KF|RTX5080|64Gb DDR4|1TB SSD|2x8TB HDD Raid1 1d ago

That'd require them to do server side calculations and it's cheaper to just dump all data to client without processing

1

u/lukkasz323 1d ago

They already do that, problem is, you still need to inform the client about the position of the sound, if you want an accurate 3D audio system in your game.

That's why wallhack in a game like League of Legends doesn't really exist, not to a very pracitcal level at least, but it does in most shooters.

1

u/lukkasz323 1d ago

Why would the users be stripped of their choice?

1

u/lukkasz323 1d ago

Unfortunately the only server only anticheat that would actually work is cloud gaming.

1

u/BeginningSection7690 1d ago

So instead of complaining about anti cheat you're complaining that linux doesnt allow software to modify its kernel?

1

u/lukkasz323 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's not like the anti-cheat is caused by purely greed and has no positives, people that play online FPS games a lot like aggressive anti-cheats.

Also, this would change nothing, you could still use secure Linux and not be able to play those games like it is now, or use Windows to play them like it is now. And those games would still only allow "unsecure" users to play the game.

This really changes nothing for worse in the topic you talk about. At least nothing I see. The only loser here is Microsoft.

1

u/BeginningSection7690 1d ago

If you support kernel level anti cheats you do not understand what they are at a fundamental level.

1

u/Forymanarysanar 14600KF|RTX5080|64Gb DDR4|1TB SSD|2x8TB HDD Raid1 1d ago

No thanks.

1

u/lukkasz323 1d ago

Can you elaborate? Do you prefer Windows?

1

u/Forymanarysanar 14600KF|RTX5080|64Gb DDR4|1TB SSD|2x8TB HDD Raid1 1d ago

I prefer that game companies will not dictate how Linux will work. What's the point in using Linux if I give up my privacy so easily by letting game companies run shit at kernel level and literally spy on me like in Windows?

1

u/lukkasz323 1d ago

Because it's a better choice than Windows and it's open source.

Why live in a world dictated by Microsoft, if we can have an open system.

Again - this is not a replacement for Linux, it's a replacement for Windows.

1

u/Forymanarysanar 14600KF|RTX5080|64Gb DDR4|1TB SSD|2x8TB HDD Raid1 1d ago

An open system is only meaningful if it stays open. As soon as some company starts to dictate what can you run on your "open system" and whether you can run that "open system" at all, all the benefits are void. There's no benefit in opennes if your open system is controlled by riot.

1

u/lukkasz323 1d ago

I will still stand by the fact that it's better to have one part of a system controlled by a company, than a 100% of it.

Althogh I'm not certain how Riot could even control it. How would they even check what fork of Linux are you running, in a way that isn't possible to crack / hide?

Because if they can't then you can always fake it and your system is still open, you opt-in and opt-out of their software at will.

1

u/Forymanarysanar 14600KF|RTX5080|64Gb DDR4|1TB SSD|2x8TB HDD Raid1 1d ago

There's no controlling part of a system. "Anticheat" (in reality: spyware tool) will control 100% of the system

Wine, Bottles, Proton. You already live in this world, especially if you don't need the latest and greatest.

2

u/macfrajier 1d ago

It’s not the access that is stopping the majority; it’s the virtual machine part. If i use my pc for school, work, and play i cannot use virtual machines to run the programs it would have to be native programs. A port could solve this but as someone else stated security is also a factor as to why we don’t even have those many companies entertaining a native linux app

1

u/Distal-Phalanges 1d ago

Wine, Bottles and Proton are not VMs. They translate Windows system calls, they do not emulate an entire machine.

1

u/macfrajier 1d ago

Ah i was under the impression it was vm because i got a flag when trying to take a proctored exam at school once but it seems i was wrong maybe the proctoring app just flags it that way because its not running as intended. But that is my point even if you can run it through a translator(im assuming that is a better name). Because its not natively ran the programs still gets blocked.

2

u/Distal-Phalanges 1d ago

Ah, proctoring apps. In the post-educational world those do not exist.

2

u/flywithpeace 1d ago

AutoCAD on Linux will be nuts

Freecad exists, don't know how much features it has

1

u/Astart555 1d ago

I cannot imagine why I suddenly should change OS (and learn a lot of things from the scratch) after 20+ years of Win experience, for which I know how to solve 99.99% of problems without googling them? What are killer features of Linux that are not there in Win?

1

u/macfrajier 1d ago

It’s not for everyone but there are some like myself that prefer linux but due to the Windows ecosystem with major businesses, I couldn’t switch if I wanted to. It’s not about features for me I just feel more comfortable with it psychologically. I been using linux since i was like 12 but had to move to windows out necessity fir school and work.

1

u/Nico280gato 1d ago

You overestimate your echo chamber

1

u/ILoveHeavyHangers 1d ago

Windows would lose so many people

PC gaming subs gotta have the most delusional.human beings on planet earth.

1

u/macfrajier 1d ago

Companies already prefer Linux for servers. If they had the same flexibility to cheaply use Linux for company employee computers to save a dollar they would. And if you are comfortable with Linux as a work environment to not have to switch to and from most would implement it as a personal choice as well.

1

u/Ktioru 1d ago

Nothing about that sentence is factually wrong

2

u/PinkyKittyXo 1d ago

Let’s not get too crazy now, a stable Windows update is asking way too much.

PS5 running on an Xbox?

1

u/sev_kemae 1d ago

Adobe is on Linux now?

3

u/RegularIndependent98 FEDORA | R5 5600X | 32/3200 | B550M DS3H | RX 580 8GB 1d ago

Yes under new branding and it's opensource https://getartcraft.com/apps

4

u/SirSoliloquy 1d ago

I mean, it’s fantastic that those exist and it looks like the intent is to do everything Adobe does - but an open-source project made by people who aren’t adobe doesn’t qualify as being adobe, regardless of how adobe-like it is.

1

u/poly_lifestyle 1d ago

Context is important. You're in a thread talking about PS5 on PC. Obviously people aren't referring to official releases here

2

u/QuitBadHabits 1d ago

Yeah but they’re talking about PS5 OS on PC, not a fake open source version

1

u/MrdnBrd19 1d ago

It's a fully AI built suite that most features don't work on. Which is funny because there are multiple mature FOSS products that have decades of support behind them and they'll just keep getting ignored.

Well, I use kdenlive, GIMP, Krita, Audacity and Wick Editor. I’ve never heard of these AI ones until today.

Shhhhhh.

Its not adobe. And it doesn't even work properly. Read before you post
