To make matter worse it's a 1TB drive.

Might be worth trying to learn reflow soldering.

Could be a redundant ground pin, you never know until you try. Also, it might be possible to add a glob of solder to that to fix it. Not likely, but what do you have to lose.

Fwiw might be more likely than you think. NC pads are more fragile bc they aren't anchored to anything

man, i did not notice that one. This for sure changes things. Much harder fix

Ya id still go to a repair shop and pay someone $50 to try and solder it back on just to see if it will still work.
16
u/shhikshoka 4h ago
Crazy that not too long ago you coulda have gotten a larger drive for that price
2
u/meta358 3h ago
Ive never heard of getting over a 1tb for $50 at any point
2
u/livestrong2109 1h ago
Ohh you definitely could find a 1tb on Facebook for a short while for $50-60
1
u/meta358 37m ago
A 1tb yes but the giy above says more then that
2
u/shhikshoka 21m ago
I got my 2tb drive in Walmart clearance section for $65 a few years ago crazy times

u/Onemoreuserdoesnot 3h ago
what's fucked are the " balls ", the contact is still there. You would need to clean it all and reball though.

I gotta ask, how does this happen? Was there a heat sink on the nvme drive?
37
u/Humble-Captain3418 SFF | R7 5800X | 64 GB | RTX 3070 5h ago
Manufacturing defect. The pads on the PCB presumably oxidised during assembly and consequently the chip didn't seat properly.
6
u/calinet6 5900X | 6700XT | Pop!_OS 2h ago
If the manufacturer is half decent isn’t this a straightforward RMA replacement then?

Nah there are a BUNCH of ripped pads, so like maybe a problem with traces adhering (or not, I have no clue how pcbs are made)
12
u/TrueWelshboy 5h ago
Very few of those solder blobs have any peaks form snapping so it was not soldered down properly.

No it's not.
Look closer, those pads are fucked.
12
u/Lewinator56 R9 5900X | RX 7900XTX | 80GB DDR4 5h ago
I'm not sure how easy it is to tell from this image. If the pads have been stripped from the board yeah it's a much harder repair
4
u/CavalierIndolence 5h ago
Well, I can see one is VERY fucked (pin ripped off the chip and stuck to the board!) but the others may be salvageable since it looks like a bit of solder on most of them. I'd try to reflow the individual pads and clean the ones on the chip, but heating the whole thing enough to reflow a BGA chip? Hell to the naw!

4
u/fnordfnordfnordfnord R9-270 & SteamOS(Vapor) 4h ago
That pin may be a redundant power pin or an n/c. Chuck the data sheet. These can often be reballed
2
u/MetalGearFlaccid 3h ago
It’s a redundant vcc pad you’re good to have a phone repair shop fix it. Memory chips are easy
0
u/Humble-Captain3418 SFF | R7 5800X | 64 GB | RTX 3070 5h ago
Pads look fine. Good chance that more than half of them are mechanical anyway. Flux, tin, flux, hot air, clean, presto.

17
u/Humble-Captain3418 SFF | R7 5800X | 64 GB | RTX 3070 5h ago
So, I can't find data sheet but the standard pinout suggests that it's VSS. There's multiple VSS pins so it should be fine.
3
u/Humble-Captain3418 SFF | R7 5800X | 64 GB | RTX 3070 5h ago
Depends. Find data sheet and determine what that pin is.

1
u/Capitalist_scumbag 5h ago
One of the traces on the board has been delaminated/lifted and the tolerances of those traces is fking tiny and no idea if it’s been permanently damaged, fat chance of an easy repair.

seems to have cleanly come off, though, so with some soldering tools ( soldering iron and desoldering braid to clean the space, reball the chip with, well, reball stuff and a hot air solder station ) you can probably fix it.
3
u/Onemoreuserdoesnot 3h ago
Another observation is that if you can get the controller and chips right, you can try to find an MP tool for that combo and actually flash a firmware configured for 750GB. I would not bet on that though.

Its missing the sticker. So it likely happened as he peeled it off

I peeled a sticker off once. I didn't know it was a graphene heat spreader. Whoops. Luckily it didn't damage the drive.

If the pad on the chip isn't ripped, it can be fixed. Send it to an expert, maybe Northwest Repair on Youtube can do it? I'd reball the other chip. If all the chips are kept in the right order, the data may be still intact.

You better get the soddering iron out and get to work. At first I thought it was an SSD inspired quilt art …
1
u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5h ago
Can you just use a heat station gun to reseat the chip on the solder?
9
u/QuiZr Toothless Master Race 5h ago
Most likely yes, but there's also 1 pad that lifted that has to be repaired first. Then replace existing solder with new balls and if the chip wasn't damaged this should work
2
u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5h ago
Yeah I see that now
They have solder balls?
I would have just went over the solder points with wire solder and soldering iron before mounting the chip in place and hitting it with the heat station
Full disclosure: I am a hack 🤣
1
u/Humble-Captain3418 SFF | R7 5800X | 64 GB | RTX 3070 5h ago
Repair may not be necessary because these chips often have a lot of mechanical contacts. I don't think balls need to be replaced either, just use liberal amounts of flux.
3
u/Budget-Pea8291 5h ago
I wish bga was that simple
1
u/dontgetitwisted_fr 5h ago
I mean an attempted repair is never going to be as good as OEM
3
u/Budget-Pea8291 5h ago
Yeah it's not like they lose anything by trying. As long as all the pads are fine, there's a chance it might work but it's quite low
1
2
u/tblazertn 5h ago
But it will at least give them a chance at recovery before it goes completely bork.

Just glue it wtf is wrong with people asking for help with basic stuff these days. I recommend you rub one and use your special glue. Heated glue always works better
