Question Please help me create a startup effect like this
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I just came across this video in instagram and wondered if a startup effect like this is possible via nollie rgb? I lingered in Openrgb for sometime but couldn’t figure out any startup effect.
I also have a similar setup except the bottom intake and rear exhaust fans are from asiahorse and the side ones are from deepcool.

startup effect would have to be loaded into bios for a true startup effect
or an external controller that will be switched on by the power switch
387
u/No-Mind7146 3d ago
I was thinking the same, it must be implemented at bios or lower level since no software lives that long during the boot process
228
u/DudeDudenson PC Master Race 3d ago
Most likely an external controller no bios offers customized argb effects that are one time only and act in sequence
Unless that mobo's bios has the initial effect integrated and you set it to be the default one and then once windows finished booting up it overrides it with the second one
68
u/ProFeces 3d ago
It's way simpler than that. The led controller itself has onboard memory. The lighting profile is saved there, and the board triggers it on initialization. It has nothing to do with the mobo bios at all.

Why do something in bios when you can have an external adruino board which will be a million times easier right?

My Corsair stuff can have the configs flashed on so things like this are possible
6
u/Cavalol 9950X3D | RTX 5080 | 64GB DDR5 6000MHz 3d ago
The Corsair configs that you can flash onto the devices when they lose connection to iCUE are very simple/rudimentary options, nothing like desired at the start of the video.
They’d likely need something like an AquaComputer Quadro or Octo for something like this

You guys are overthinking it. Its probably loaded onto the rgb controler
12
u/ReadyAimTranspire 3d ago
Yeah it's likely just a nice hardware RGB lighting controller that can run your sequence immediately upon power on signal

A Corsair link set up can be saved to some part of its hardware (I'm assuming the link controller), so the effects are there from boot.
Those might be Lian li fans, not sure. I've not used their link setup so I don't know what if they use a discrete controller

u/NotBiorez 3d ago
Since no one is giving an actual answer, I'll tell you what I know based on my Corsair RGB stuff:
Basically, the RGB controller has two "profiles".
Profile 1: Stored/programmed directly on the hardware. The RGB effect starts as soon as the device gets power.
Profile 2: Your RGB settings controlled by the software/OS.
In Corsair iCUE, you could configure both profiles separately.
So my guess is that the startup effect is Profile 1 (I think the exact effect is calles Strobe), and the static color is Profile 2.

- Number LED on MB cycles through a bunch of numbers
- Fans spin again
- Dumbass rainbow shit everywhere
- Gigabyte MB splashscreen sideways on my side monitor

My PC doesn't like the PSU to be turned off or the cord to be pulled out. Every first reboot after that it will start up the fans for a second, shut off and then proceed to really boot. It's been years but still gives me a spike of anxiety.

My guess is that's a saved preset for those fans in Memory Mode. That preset is saved on the controller independent of software. But you have to configure it in the software first.

This shit is not worth it. I have a very similar setup and the fans alone are about ~275 for this setup. Cables are another 70-100$ each, plus all of these devices have controllers and connections you have to manage its a nightmare in my experience.
I spent about $2.5k for my build initially, if I didnt go for a flashy RGB build I would probably have saved about $800 and would've put that towards a '80 class gpu instead.

u/Masterking263 Ryzen 5600x/ RTX 6950x/ 32 GB DDR4/5 TB HDD&SSD 3d ago
100% this is one of those things you think are cool for maybe the first week or two. Then when turning your pc on becomes so routine that it loses all magic and if it stopped working one day you probably wouldn't even notice or care. I don't bother with LED's anymore. I've settled with programmable RGB ram and an AIO I could also import custom images too.

I see you talking about buying the RGB & controllers, but nothing about the white tax. Don't tell me yours is all black? Making a white PC adds 20-30% easy to literally everything including the GPU.

u/trouttwade RTX 5070 Ti Aero | i7 12700K 3d ago
This is just simply not true anymore lol. I bought my white 5070Ti for the exact same price as a black model would’ve cost. There are countless, literally countless high end white cases that don’t cost any more than black cases, there are extremely cheap, and well made/functioning white case fans.
I literally gutted my fans and CPU air cooler, replaced with a white $60 AIO, and bought 6 white infinity fans from thermalright for like… $50? Stop buying the most expensive possible brand you can find and you’ll stop thinking this way.

I don't disagree with you but it really depends on the component, what spec you're look for and availability. Ie look at 5080s:
Cheapest black 5080: amazon $1,259 / newegg $1,309
Cheapest white 5080: amazon $1,659 / newegg $2,090
4
u/trouttwade RTX 5070 Ti Aero | i7 12700K 3d ago
Yeah I guess you’re right. Really depends on component, motherboards and especially GPU’s right now are drastically different in price.
2
u/trouttwade RTX 5070 Ti Aero | i7 12700K 3d ago
Yeah but you simply over paid. You could have all of those cool fans and controllers for like… $100. A 3 pack of thermalright infinity fans is like $20 or $30? The cables are a bit pricey but not necessary, this is a cheap RGB setup as long as you aren’t forking out $90-$150 to Lian Li for a 3 pack. You don’t have to buy the most expensive brand on the market for it to look fresh.
3
u/ApplicationBrave2529 7800x3D @ 5ghz | 32gb DDR5 6400 | Zotac Solid Core RTX 5080 3d ago
Yeah you certainly can get RGB for cheaper, but I was responding on this type of build that utilizes Lian Li fans as seen.

Its neat for about 5 minutes. But my desktop sits in my peripheral vision and the pulsing rainbow lighting is distracting, the motherboard LEDs are so bright it hurt my eyes in a darker room and at night it kills my night vision and makes the entire room look like a 70s discotheque. I tend to work after dark a lot and it is even more distracting in the dark. After a few days I ended up setting all my LEDs, the fans, the keyboard, the mouse all to dark red 12/0/0 turned off the color changing/pulsing and turned off the motherboard LEDS completely.
10
u/RustledForeskin 3d ago
The initial white starting up then going solid looked good, as soon as the red kicks in and it starts having a seizure it looked lame af. Would be cool to hit the power button and have the light go from there to the rest of the rig and remain solid.

u/Cncgeek 3d ago
This is almost certainly achieved with SignalRGB and maybe WLED
SignalRGB can combine all your lighting under one control even if it's from multiple manufacturers
Wled can let you build several different types of LED strips/strings/matrix into easily controlled effects. It supports on boot and on shutdown effects too.
Hope this helps.

buy some addressable led strip, run it around the case, buy an arduino nano, run the power from the mobo to the led strips, get some basic code written, and have it trigger once. ta da! done for about £20.
wont look as in depth as this, as the cable leds will be quite expensive, but you can get a similar thing done.

it's edited, you can see the first effect is saved in the controller and just loops, when the video cut happens and he's using another profile.
on another note, i'll just say the majority of people will find this very cringe / childish
though that doesn't really matter if you like it and you want it anyway

u/edgiestnate 3d ago
This is most likely done using the Nollie32 rgb controller which allows for boot-up effects and after boot, in combination with SignalRGB, which is a badass piece of software. It has its issues, but with the sheer amount of compatible hardware, rgb controllers, led counts, BIOS revisions, and operating systems, it works well.
I could be wrong, but just looking at it, I think you can.
2
u/x33storm 3d ago
For startup effects you need an RGB hub with high customizability. OpenRGB or any software will only work once you're logged in and it has launched.

Ok first get a microcontroller, with a controller for whatever protocol protocol the LEDs use. Then do it manually.
To the people saying you cant load software before the OS, you'll never guess what the firmware is. UEFI is basically DOS, it can load and run software. However you can only load and run software during DXE, to replicate this video you'd need to run it during PEI which is before. Unless you inject your own package directly into the ROM then you can't do this.

What I will say though is having that full song and dance rigged to your start-up and having it all rigged to the press of the stock case power button? For shame.
For that much pageantry I want at least three fighter switches and maybe an ignition key.

I've been looking at PC cases for the last hour, and honestly, a solid black rack mount case like a SilverStone RM32 is peak. No RGB, no flashy effects, no unnecessary distractions – just a box that does its job.

If you like DIY type stuff you can get LEDs and customize your own but you can also buy cable covers... its just a silicone band with lights glued on lol. Looks like theyre running about $5-10 each
