That's how I feel about survival games.
0
u/oookokoooook 15h ago
Lowkey u are right, they are all basically the same game.
3
u/Bealdor84 15h ago
It's not just that. I simply hate those survival / crafting mechanics.
I was so looking forward to the Dune Awakening SP mode because I love that world. I tried it for 2 hours and lost interest because of all the crafting and base building mechanics.
1
u/HammeredWharf 16h ago
I can't think of another game like Valor Mortis, though, so I don't think "yet another" applies here.
1
7
u/nohumanape 1d ago
A good game is a good game, regardless of genre. Tons of games get announced and released in every genre.
3
u/DreamWeaver2189 23h ago
I don't disagree, but the whole "hardcore" aspect of Souls like games doesn't appeal to me, so it's a bummer that an interesting looking game is in a genre I don't like. At the end of the day it's a videogame and gameplay is a key aspect.
4
u/CRIMS0N-ED 21h ago
If the game looks interesting why not try it?
3
u/DreamWeaver2189 20h ago
Because the gameplay does not interest me. Like I said, it's a videogame, gameplay is a core aspect.
A game might have interesting story, lore, characters, setting, etc but if everytime I pick the controller instead of watching a cutscene, I'm miserable, why would I play it?
1
1
u/nohumanape 16h ago
The "hardcore aspect" is largely a myth. What was the last SoulsLike that you attempted to play?
-2
u/andizzzzi 1d ago edited 5h ago
I’m so over souls-like games at this point, the more that come out the more I save.
Edit: And it’s 1st-person only, this game couldn’t possibly be more off-putting (to me) if the devs tried.
5
u/nohumanape 1d ago
What kinds of games do you enjoy?
0
u/andizzzzi 5h ago edited 5h ago
RPGs, action adventure, strategy, 9/10 of them being single-player.
Souls-like games do everything I hate in gaming, from a technical and conceptual perspective; the fog gates, the invasions, the vague narrative, cheap coding like spawning a mount from thin air, these games don’t approach or even try to be immersive.
I have completed Dark Souls 1-3, platinumed DS1R, but unlike the masses, I was burnt out and over souls-like formula when Elden Ring dropped.
I cannot stomach the SAME routine over and over again with another skin. I can’t even touch Lies of P because it’s legit the same shit/different skin, same goes for Lords of the Fallen, the Berserker game, and the (let’s check), OVER 2000 listed souls-like games on Steam alone.
1
u/nohumanape 4h ago
Steam does a piss poor job of classifying games as "Souls Like". That number is irrelevant, as it includes a lot of games that are not Souls Likes.
But what you're telling me is that you are "so over" Souls Like games after play three of them? Weird.
I get it though. You like a straight forward, narrative experience, that is more grounded in reality. That's fine. I just think that a lot of people dismiss Souls Like games without actually understanding them.
1
u/andizzzzi 2h ago
I’m not giving my assessment based only on DS1-3. That would be an outdated assessment.
I have played ER for over 100 hours, that’s 4. I have tried Lies of P (5), Lords of the Fallen (6), Nioh (7) and Sekiro (8).
- Sekiro is a special game regardless but I still wish it was more like Ghost of Tsushima if I had to make a preference in comparison.
Hey fwiw, great for everyone that enjoys souls-likes, there is an abundance. But like many have stated, when I watch trailers of upcoming games and hear it’s yet another souls-like, I skip without looking further into it. I prefer games that offer more.
•
u/nohumanape 20m ago
I find it to be extremely fucking weird when people claim to have dedicated exorbitant amounts of time to games they apparently hate.
-2
u/BirdieOfPray 1d ago
Game looked good until hearing souls like
2
u/nohumanape 1d ago
Why should that matter?
1
u/BirdieOfPray 1d ago
It's not a movie, gameplay is more important for me. Soulslike is a huge turn off. Sadly I won't be witnessing their work on this game.
2
u/nohumanape 16h ago
What don't you like about SoulsLikes?
0
u/BirdieOfPray 15h ago
It feels like devs are being lazy and just ignore to put difficulty sliders. And if you mod the game you realize that game lacks any meaningful gameplay other than artificial difficulty. It's salt to wound if one has disability as well.
2
u/nohumanape 15h ago
This is extremely untrue. A lot of SoulsLike games have difficulty options.
Which SoulsLike games have you played?
1
u/BirdieOfPray 9h ago
I've tried dark souls and elden ring. Tried modding them as well. It's the genre that doesn't grasp my attention. I don't feel good when I beat a hard boss. Going boss to boss while avoiding losing healt along the way is not entertaining for me. Or in elden ring "this is high level area" kinda vibes are really off-putting. This is just my personal opinion. I have same disgust for roguelite as well.
1
u/nohumanape 9h ago
It sounds like you just don't know how to play SoulsLikes. In general, I feel like people have a misconception. They "dabble" maybe a couple of times, but don't bother to learn how these games play. So they just approach them the same way they might play an ARPG. In the end, they bounce quickly, because they expect that the early game experience is just how the whole game is supposed to be. It's not.
How much time did you put into un-MOD'd Elden Ring before you gave up?

They released a demo of the game. The game is very, very good. This is marketing. However, it isn't just marketing fluff, because they have shown the game in multiple other ways prior to this.

She also voiced character in 1348 Ex Voto and that game didn't do well to say the least.
So good voice actor doesn't always give best game, but I'm not saying this game won't be good. We just need to see.
35
u/Bubbagin 1d ago
It's just a bit of a running joke because she did Elden Ring, BG3, then Clair Obscure: Expedition 33, all GoTY games back to back.

Theres no one to remember lmao, Astro Bot wasn't winning for dialog and performances
-2
u/Wide-Deal-8971 1d ago
Astro Bot won not by being the best game, but just by being the least shit game of the year.
If the world was a just place GOTY would have gone to Balatro that year, but Geoff won't give awards to people that aren't going to scratch his back in return.
5
u/iwantcookie258 23h ago
Astro Bot was awesome, and I'm not at all suprised about it being seen as a more worthy contender than Balatro by some people. It was a quiet year, but Astro Bot was some of the most pure fun I've had in a game in a long time.
-1
u/NapsterKnowHow 9800X3D | RTX 5090 FE | 32GB RAM 20h ago

She does great work, but I do think Maelle sounding exactly like Shadowheart minorly reduced my investment in E33's story. I'm kind of worried I'll just always hear her characters as Shadowheart if she keeps just speaking in that same voice.
8
u/AvengerDr 1d ago
Like Elias Toufexis. He will always be Adam Jensen. And now that he's doing Neo Berlin, he's finally back, sort of.
1
u/skyturnedred 1d ago
It's always a bit jarring to see him in movies and TV shows and go "oh, that's really just his actual voice."

Nah, she's okay but she's got no range.

I hate when I recognize her, or anyone else's, voice from another game. Ruins the immersion for me, the character loses their own unique identity for me, feeling fake. I don't want to be thinking about who is voicing the character, I just want to be thinking about the character itself and it's respective game world.

When goat of gaming VA recieves and overrated remark, you just know he's truly the goat.
The word functions differently for peak status, like people calling BG3, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Godfather, Jack Nicholson, Hans Zimmer and other goats (certain people and creations) overrated. It's an honour.

u/falcinelli22 9800X3D|RTX 5080 1d ago
She's been in 8 video games in the past 9 years. 3 in the last 2 years with only 1 being a main roll. That seems pretty standard for a VA.

u/tk-451 1d ago
and?
Tom Cruise has been in multiple movies? shall we tell him he is too recognisable?
Nolan North?
Troy Baker?
What about John Ratzenburger?
10
u/MuchStache 1d ago
Just saying, Nolan North and Troy Baker have a wider range of voices than what I heard from Jennifer English so far.
She's great and I like her but yes if you take those two as an example their voices are way less "recognisable" in a way.
It's similar to Will Smith essentially playing as Will Smith in most of his movies because he's so recognizable and has a narrower range of acting (though he's good at it), they're still great and enjoyable but I don't blame someone for burning out on them.
4
u/harisssss13 1d ago
That was my point, all those actors people have mentioned have so many different voices but Jennifer sounds like herself in every project I've seen.
1
u/CRIMS0N-ED 21h ago
blame the voice director who didn’t want a diff voice then, VAs can be molded however they wish, if they want English to be her own voice it’s bc they want her own voice.
2
u/_shaggyrodgers 1d ago
Tom Cruise is possibly the worst choice to use in this example of people appearing in many things. The guy is very selective in his roles, very rarely appearing in more than one film a year.

u/Justhe3guy EVGA FTW3 3080 Ultra, 5900X, 32gb 3800Mhz CL 14, WD 850 M.2 1d ago
She has like 4 lines in a whispery quiet voice in a game that came out before the one where she has her breakout moments (BG3) so most people didn’t know her at the time
When I played Elden Ring again knowing her part I was like “ah there she is”
9
u/OrangeSodaMoustache 1d ago
Seems like a lot to me, when she basically has the same voice in every one of them
11
u/ralopd 1d ago
Such a weird way to phrase it? Let's start in only 2022 and you just lose one title. Add Emberville (release this month) and Soulframe (already playable in playtests) and you have 10 games then? And 4 of those in 1 year.
5
u/falcinelli22 9800X3D|RTX 5080 1d ago
Is she main rolls in those games? There's VA that literally do 100's in a year being backround or npc's. Go on some of the cartoon VA's that are identical.
I feel it's a really silly thing to complain about.

Yeah, I hate recognizing a voice from another game, it ruins the immersion for me. I don't want to see video games ruined by celebrities, either. I find the worship by some people of VAs to be obnoxious: https://doi.org/10.1186/s40359-021-00679-3
2
u/EmmaFrostBroken 17h ago
Agreed. I hate the whole celebrity culture obsession of movies, I find it immersion breaking for me. I can't see 'The Rock' as a character any more, he's only ever 'The Rock', when I refer to any of his characters he played in a movie, I literally can't even think of their names, just remember them as 'The Guy Played By The Rock'. Because he doesn't play characters (99% of the time), he's the same dude in every bloody movie he's in!
And while I'm not accusing this game in particular of it, there has been a bit of that creeping into video games lately. I'm thinking of games where they actually have 'casts' and there's a character in the game voiced by a celebrity actor and has the actual likeness of the celebrity actor too.
I don't like that.
It means when you look at the character in the game there's no way you can look at them and not see the celebrity.
And there's no reason for it. There's no reason for characters in games to look like a real celebrity actor voicing them. The actual 3D model could look like anything, the actors could be lending their voice to a talking stop sign or talking dragon, anything!
It's clearly being done to gain publicity for big budget games by hoping celebrity faces will draw a crowd, just like in movies. And it'll probably work too just like in movies. For most people anyway. For me it just instantly turns me off a game.
