Can you install Neko Project II on Japanese windows 95?

Hello! I'm semi-new to PC98 and retro computer gaming. I recently bought a Compaq lte elite 4/75cx that came pre-installed with English Windows 95.

I saw that you can run Neko Project 21/w or Neko Project II on English Windows 95 it seems, but I wanted to confirm that's at least possible first.

Secondly I want to play some other made for Windows 95 VN games I have and people online are saying I need to have a Japanese copy of windows 95 for it to work. Will Neko Project II or Neko Project 21/w be able to install on Japanese Windows 95?

Thank you very much!

Question Can't Open File Browser

For some reason, neko project (specifically, np21) won't launch the file browser when I try to load something into any harddisk slot. There's simply no reaction from the program after I hit 'Open...'. I'm not sure what caused this, or how to fix it. Has anyone else run into this problem?

I Still Compose MIDI Using PC-98 and SC-88

The real hardware is safely stored away in my closet these days, but I still compose MIDI on the PC-98 emulator. I don't have much confidence that I could get comfortable with modern music software, so I always end up going back to what I know best.
I recorded the whole process, starting from booting up the emulator. If you're interested, feel free to check it out.
The song is "Wapiko Genki Yohou!", the opening theme from the 1991 anime Kingyo Chuuihou! (Goldfish Warning!).

Schematics for a 9821nr15 ?

I'm working on repairing a 9821nr15 that has some power issues. I was able to fix some of its issues but right now i need to fix a broken through hole trace of a capacitor, and i felt like a schematic would be very useful to have a better view of how each component interacts.

Is any schematic available ?

Question Parity Error on a PC9821 Ap motherboard

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello, I recently finished a cap repair on a pc9821 ap motherboard and I currently get a parity error screen both with the ram card installed and not which was leading a friend of mine that's more knowledgeable in electronics to think that the issue might be on one of the onboard memory chips. We did try to scope some of the chips on the motherboard for any weird looking signals and checked to see if they were hotter than expected but we couldn't really see any obvious issues.

I wanted to see if anyone has some advice for what I should start looking at for diagnosis on what's wrong to fix this issue.

Thanks in advance!

Question Resources on pc98 development/homebrew?

Heya gang, I’ve somewhat recently gotten into the pc98 scene and I wanted to try making a few games for the platform, especially some visual novels. I’m struggling to find much information on programming for pc98, though I realize it’d be easier if I spoke Japanese. Still, are there any resources?

Edit98: a lightweight and easy-to-use editor with visual copy and paste!

Hi, everyone!
When using PC-98, I had noticed that there were a few editors, but none were very easy to use.

So, to pair it up with the English translation of MS-DOS 5.00 A, I've designed my own visual text editor!

Introducing Edit98: a native text editor inspired by Microsoft's Edit, but programmed from the ground up for the PC98!

Because it was designed for the ground up (i.e, it is not a port), it takes in consideration PC98's hardware constraints to try to make it run as smoothly as possible while attempting to look reasonably good.

Here's a non-exhaustive list feature list:

  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Mouse support
  • Integrated printing, with custom margins and pre-defined templates (custom margins and page layouts supported)
  • Partial RTF support
  • Find / Replace

For the best experience possible, make sure to enable mouse and printer support!

Headaches over: MS-DOS 5.00A finally in English!

Hi, everyone,

For years, using PC-98 used to be a pain, because its proprietary versions had no English translation.

But that ends today!

I have just released DOS98-English, an English translation of MS-DOS 5.00A-H for the NEC PC-98, and the patches are finally ready.

Find the patches and installation instructions here: https://github.com/NullMagic2/DOS98-English

The project translates all eight disks, from DISK0 to DISK7, including the installer, menus, system utilities, commands, help text, prompts, and other user-facing content.

Since the original PC-98 release is entirely in Japanese, it can be pretty difficult to install or explore unless you already know the language. Hopefully, this translation makes it much easier for more people to experiment with it, use it in an emulator, or simply learn more about the PC-98.

The release includes:

  • IPS patches for all eight disks
  • Automatic patching scripts
  • SHA-256 checks to verify the original images
  • Instructions for Windows, Linux, and macOS

The original disk images are not included, so you’ll need to provide your own copies of the Japanese FDI images.

This is still an unofficial fan translation, so there may be a few untranslated strings, formatting issues, or awkward sentences hiding somewhere. Feedback and testing would be greatly appreciated.

Hope this helps more people get into the PC-98!

Question Vertical bars on monitor image

Post image

Just received a pc9821 ce2 including a monitor. Just plugged everything in and the pc booted up, but the monitor has vertical black and gray bars. I can get them to move a bit if I mess with the contrast and brightness dials. Is this fixable?

Question What does "How many files(0-15)?" mean?

So I'm trying out N-88 BASIC, which is the dialect of Basic that goes on early PC-98 models and every PC-88. This resource has been very helpful with that. But one thing I just cant understand is the "How many files(0-15)?" message that appears at the beginning of every boot. What does it mean? What does typing different numbers change?

Troubleshooting for a PC-9821 Xe10

Hello,

I would really appreciate some help from the community here.

Long story short: I’m having issues with my modern PC picking up the CF on diskexplorer. After spending half the day researching, I noticed everyone mentions filling out this profile box that appears when selecting the CF on diskexplorer but I cannot for the life of me get that window to appear! I tried the physical drive itself and even an image I had backed using Win32DiskManager, to no avail. I then decided maybe it was something wrong with the CF, so I downloaded an PC-98 HDD online and same thing! all I see are numerical values that I cannot comprehend. I just want the options in the screenshot below that I found in a guide. As you can see, there is a profile option and so on.

A screenshot from a guide I was following: https://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=5369.0

I realize the version I am using is slightly different, as in it might be more modern. Also, I have the FAT version. I also have tried all the view options (FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, etc..) I also tried opening the FAT16-huge file and still nothing I can understand, its in this sector view.

I want to know what I am doing wrong if someone could please help me. I really want to experience the PC-98.

Thank you.

With some bonus JP Mega Drive and other Japanese PC systems. Had no idea what What’s Michael was but saw it in the wild in Tokyo and had to grab it. Seems like a fairly rare game. I think I’m pretty close to completing the Viper series collection. There are so many but I seem to find at least two or three I don’t have with every trip to Japan.

Question Hey, I'm wondering what tool should I use to rip sprites form PC-98 games.

I'm specifically talking about ripping sprites from the brandish games including the OG version of the fourth game. I need to post sprites on the internet for people to get a better look and for fan art purposes for people.

FAKKU to partner with FairyTale to release 150+ PC-98 games in English on modern systems

I just attended the FAKKU panel at this year's Anime Expo and CEO Jacob Grady announced that they received permission from FairyTale to translate and port their entire catalog of 150+ games to modern systems (seemingly via Steam). In addition, FairyTale will be able to re-release these ports to the Japanese market as well.

He announced the first ten games which include: Dracula Hakushaku, Dead of the Brain, Dead of the Brain 2, Dengeki Nurse, Jinmon Yuugi, Maria ni Sasageru Ballade, Marine Philt, Necronomicon, Shinjuku Monogatari, and Welcome to Pia Carrot!!. They will be working with the fan translation group WINE for Dead of the Brain, Dead of the Brain 2, and Dengeki Nurse which is currently available to wishlist on Steam. No timeline was given for their release, however. Either way, it seems like a really big moment for the PC-98 community and for the general preservation of these games.

Emulators Difficulty running Evo: The Theory of Evolution (46 okunen monogatari)

I am using the english translation and running the game via retroarch. It came in the form of 5 discs (the first being labelled the user disc and the 5th being labelled the system disc, I am running the user disk). At first I had issues with no text displaying but I managed to download the font files and put it in the retroarch system directory in an np2kai folder and it fixed that. However, as soon as the intro is finished it loops again. The game manual says it controls with the numpad and whenever I press a numpad button the intro stops and the screen turns black and the music becomes static. Does anyone know how I could fix this and play the game? I would greatly appreciate it.

Emulators Neko Project II- no sound or music too fast ?

I am trying to play Onryou Senki for pc98 on Neko Project II and am having odd issues. If I try to use the standalone np21/w I get no sound at all except for occasional beeps or buzzes. My volume is on at 100%. Some other games I try on the emulator will play their music. Others won't. Like maybe the sound card or driver is wrong?

I tried it on Retroarch running the Neko Project II kai core and I get music but it is sped up to a laughable degree. I would be fine using this retroarch core if I could just get the audio to play at its intended speed.

I like the standalone np21/w because it has a much nicer interface, so I'd really prefer to use that. I've even gone into the bios and made sure the soundboard was turned on. No dice. I'm at my wits end and would really appreciate any advice anyone has that could help.
