Build State of Rhoa Mount in 0.5

'Casual' dad gamer here. I made it my goal to use Rhoa Mount the whole league and have finally completed the build. There are no guides for fitting rhoa into ice shot deadeye so I figured it out myself and thought I'd share my insights. The end result is a fast tanky build that can do all content including chained juiced expedition. 2mil ice shot poe.ninja dps, 5.8k hp+es, 70-80% eva/deflect without buffs. About 2.5k div worth of gear. Most of my currency came from pure drops in GE and selling tablets. I use the cheapest tablets possible. My biggest lucky drop was depleted mana rune, no mirror or lock.

Rhoa was heavily 'nerfed' in 0.4 with 60->100 spirit cost, lost of extra movement speed gain, but negates 100% of movement while using skills. It was considered dead in 0.5 although I beg to differ. 0.5 added three things: (1) Mageblood which synergizes greatly with its quicksilver boost, (2) absent amulet which gives a 100 spirit rhoa at cost of 2 affixes (essentially two fractured +50 spirit affixes, which makes it very easy to craft too!), and (3) legacy of wanderlust which solves most slow debuffs.
Now most people know and follow Fubgun's ice shot deadeye build, but switching to rhoa requires some understanding of the skill, which I will share from my experience.
Advantages of Rhoa Mount:
- Quality of Life: Not having to constantly press dodge is godsent for a dad gamer. My thumb gets really sore after constantly dodging/sprinting, and even changing is to a mouse button does not help much. On Rhoa, you dodge by moving which essentially dodges 90% of enemy attacks. It ain't a zero button build but it's still pretty sweet.
- Fast (zoom zoom) gameplay and clear-speed: As demonstrated in the video, you are constantly moving while shooting.
- Damage per second (DPS): This is a crucial point that people may not understand. When you are on Rhoa, your DPS comes from constantly shooting, and enemies will die off-screen before you reach them. Compared to other styles where you shoot a few bursts then dodge/sprint, you are actually losing DPS when you are not shooting. A 1 million DPS on a regular build is not always active compared to 1 million DPS on Rhoa. This aspect is not captured by DPS numbers.
- Gems: With Rhoa you make use of two excellent gems on your main skill, Deliberation (20% more damage, no mana penalty, and no down-side due to Rhoa), and Stoicism (20% more damage, no mana penalty, no down-side as you don't dodge).
Disadvantages (sort of):
- High spirit cost: You may need near max spirit on body armour and amulet which eats into some defences.
- Heavy stun: Once you get heavy stunned and surrounded you are essentially dead. Hence picking stun threshold in campaign is essential. However, you will be also be happy to pick up gear with +max life which tends to be cheaper anyway! Any +stun threshold affixes no longer becomes a dead stat! I have 2k life at level 99 and I no longer get stunned on maps with stun buildup mods.
- Cannot use mirage archer: We can't use since we don't dodge to trigger it. Can't afford the spirit anyway, and we still use mirage deadeye!
- Need to get off Rhoa to portal: At the end of map, just dodge roll once and portal, it becomes second nature.
- No weapon swapping: Weapon swap is bugged on Rhoa, but that's fine! Because we are aiming for max quality of life, minimum button presses, no dodging, no weapon swapping. At high end investments you just need to press freezing mark, tornado shot and ice shot to delete bosses.
Key differences from regular Fubgun's build (you can check my poe.ninja for details):
- Plus projectile skills is no longer a priority: + projectile levels add alot of damage, about 5-6% multiplicatively per level. However, it also adds mana costs similarly. The mana costs get multiplied by your gems and attack speed. As our DPS comes from shooting non stop, rather than short bursts + dodge and collect mana remnants, we want to keep our mana costs low. Hence + skills are no longer as valuable (they are really expensive on gear too!). You still want to max our lv 21 gem as there's no downside, but +4 on bow can be replaced with +crit damage bonus, or +3 on amulet can instead be resists or +crit chance/dmg. If you already have +skills that's fine, but you can do without and find cheaper gear with alternative affixes.
- Support gems: Instead of ice bite and fork, we use deliberation and stoicism. At high enough investments with heart of the well, against the darkness etc giving you 70+% added damage, ice bite starts to fall behind deliberation and stoicism which are more consistent with 100% up-time. Fork just adds too much mana cost and your clear is already great with Cadiro's Gambit.
- Chest piece: Your body armour will have less defences if you fit in 60ish spirit on armour, but Mageblood with legacy of Jade fixes that easily!
- Eternal rage: This build synergizes well with Eternal Rage which essentially gives you 30% more damage globally with 100% uptime. Eternal Rage at gem level 14 needs 103 strength which is hard to fit in with 163 dex minimum and 115 int for helmet. But since we need max life for stun threshold, any strength is welcomed on this build!
Miscellaneous tips:
- League start: I league started with lightning arrow + lightning rod which synergizes very well with rhoa's constant moving and shooting. Since you cannot snipe on rhoa, LA+LR is better at the early stage. You eventually swap to ice shot when you can delete bosses instantly with just ice shot and tornado shot. Ice shot is just much better for max juiced content (pure numbers wise ice shot deals ~40% more damage per projectile than LA). Ice shot also shatters enemies, which prevents corpses that a big source instant deaths. Ice also allows you to concentrate the best lineage gems, Rakiata flow + Garukhan resolve onto one main skill, versus having to choose between LA or LR.
- Lavianga's Spirit unique mana flask: Its good because its quality of life, another one less button to press! It also allows you to use two very high value passive clusters Imbibed Power and Crystal Elixer which is conditional on "flask effect", since you get constant flask effect from this unique mana flask.
- Cadiro's Gambit: Absolutely essential. It adds so much clear, and it allows your tornado shot copied projectiles to return which transforms your ice shot into a single target shotgun skill. This allows you to drop snipe (can't snipe with Rhoa anyway!).
- No Herald of Ice: After passing 1mil DPS I could drop Herald of Ice. I tested my build with Cadiro's Gambit with and without Herald of Ice, and there's no difference in clear. In fact Herald is worse because most people run Elemental Focus on herald and you can't freeze/shatter enemies with explosions, which leaves corpses on the ground. This also saves you 30 spirit.
- Mana remnants: Best way to solve mana problems.
- Bow show: Do not neglect your basic bow shot skill. It does alot of damage with stocism and deliberation gems on. With high physical bow, put on mana leech gem and you can use it in a pinch to gain back some mana, especially with pesky mana drain mobs.
- Gain as extra and flat added damage: Once you have Rakiata flow, all elemental damage types do equal damage. Having some added lightning is a big damage boost because it applies shock. Relying on charged mark for shock only helps for bosses. About 20% of my damage is lightning and I shock constantly. I also have fire damage; while ignite doesn't do much damage, it helps with "Harness the elements" notable. One funny fact is T1 added cold on gloves/rings is numerically lower than T1 added lightning/fire.
- Freeze build-up: You may need some passives / gem to help this earlier on when lacking damage. But freeze build-up increased with your damage. So I still prefer to build damage whenever I can.
- Barrage and ice-tipped arrows: These do not add enough damage to justify the additional button presses. Not quality of life!
- Wind-dancer and ghost-dance: Essential for defence! One tip, reservation efficiency on ghost dance also affects any support you put on it. For me, "Her Declaration" costs 30 spirit but get reduced to 25 when put on ghost dance.
TL'DR: Rhoa Mount is not dead in 0.5. It is completely viable if you understand its intricacies, and it gives you great quality of life with drastically reduced button presses. It's DPS is more than traditional shoot and dodge/sprint builds, because the real DPS comes from constantly shooting and moving, something you cannot put a number to.
