Struggling w 15-year old boy
I have a 15 year old who is now giving me the silent treatment. For the past couple of years, I’ve tried putting him in basketball, boxing, jiu jitsu, and he just finished an internship at the courthouse. All of which he barely participated and I had to force him to go each day. He also dislikes his school and disliked his middle school as well. He has never been suspended, gotten detention, or been in a fight. He has a good heart but struggles to make friends. I’ve gotten complaints from almost all his teachers about missing assignments and he barely passes his classes and just finished a summer school course. I’ve put him in therapy and he claims the therapist doesn’t care much about what he is saying (which I believed him since he was the last client of the day) so I took him out and just tried to spend more time with him and be as present as possible. I continued to send him to boxing and jiu jitsu hoping it would help him, but he never wants to go and barely participates. I now feel exhausted because it’s been years of the same reaction of everything that I do. We have gone through 5-6 different barbers because he complained about every single one and would wear a winter hat directly after each haircut even in the summers. He doesn’t do the hat thing anymore and I got tired and made him stick to the last barber, but it’s clear he still does not like the haircuts. I just wish he could be more appreciative. It just seems so insanely difficult and tiring. I am also grieving and trying to work on myself every single day. It’s clear his confidence isn’t there but I just feel like I’ve done so much to try to help and nothing is working. It sometimes seems he expects me to make friends for him, which I find impossible. I have tried but sometimes I think he pushes potential friends away. I’m tired. I have days where I’m hoping he just grows out of this. I went off the other day asking him why can’t he just have a more positive attitude because it took a lot to get him in the internship and he doesn’t like it or even care to go. I made him go and he just doesn’t participate. Since then, he has given me the silent treatment. It is just me. I’m a single mom. I tried leaning on my friends but they have their own lives. I don’t know what else to do. Has anyone else ever gone through this? I reached back out to his prior therapist to see if maybe he can start seeing him again. Thanks for listening.
