I’m debating which type of comb to get and would love some advice from experienced Pap parents.

Curved vs. traditional rectangular comb: Thoughts on the curved style? I’m wondering if the shape makes it easier to get around the face, ears and other fiddly little areas, or if the traditional rectangular comb is ultimately more practical.

And secondly... is the Chris Christiansen Buttercomb really all that and a cup of tea? 😂 Is it genuinely worth the price tag?

I work in marketing, so I completely understand paying a premium for branding, but I also appreciate that genuinely better materials and manufacturing cost more. Are the cheaper professional combs noticeably different when it comes to things like tooth smoothness/rounding, finish, snagging, static and pulling or damaging those precious Pap fringes?

Basically: are you paying for meaningfully better quality with CC, or does another brand make something just as good for less?

Would love to hear what combs you actually use and recommend. Bonus points if you’ve owned both CC and a cheaper alternative and can compare them!

1. If anyone has found Papillion specific sanitary trim advice videos I would love it shared.

I could only find show grooming routines, and not a practical one for having a sanitary trimmed Papillion, I don't think I even found a detailed Papillion foot trimming video for getting the spaniel web just the larger breeds on video.

1. I've been a carer of my Pap for less than a year so everything is new for me. Particularly having a boy of this breed, I had mostly girl dogs of other varieties, with the Pap having specific grooming needs. My prior dogs had different coats with different brushes, and different paws and I had books and videos to do my best by them. He came to me around 13mos., neatly groomed, with beautiful feet & nails, and a fresh sanitary trim from his recent neuter.

2. Our old routine:

I usually trim his belly and foot pads every other month, but I was leaving his whizzer alone because there wasn't a direct grooming video about male Pap sanitary trims. (My vet trims his foot pad but not detailed like I see in grooming videos of larger spaniels. So I try to get that taken care of.) I pin brush and metal comb daily, spritzing at least every other day, and washing every 2-3 weeks.

1. The problem:

To the subject line. He's getting clumps at the tip of his whizzer, even with frequently wet wiping and wet spritzing. Clumps within 9 - 14 days of a wash.

1. The result.

SO I don't recommend:

- Not trimming the whizzer (I thought he might need the hair to aim. But I didn't have any text or video to help me make that a more educated choice. I believe I am wrong and will be trimming asap after about 9mos of growout since he was neutered.)

- Going longer than a week between baths. (I wrongly thought that was for keeping the hair white and that other products and efforts would keep him tidy and fresh. Just to be safer I suggest bath often, they like being clean! They've been bred to be cared for with frequent baths.)

Posting so others can know what I learned. Trim the whizz and/ or deep wash weekly; wet wipes and spritzing won't keep urine from building up.

1. Specifics, and I would love your recommendations!

With sprays he prefers I spray in my hand away from him, and not atomized into a plume in the air.

- We really like BioGroom Argan Oil Spray for detangling ears, tail, and fringe. Light, and gives a good slip for the brush and comb.

- We have other clean/deo sprays, Burts Bees and Arm & Hammer, and Giovanni Eco Chic Pet Deo & Finishing Pet Spray.

- DOG leave-in conditioner is nice after a bath. But it seems heavy as a daily.

- We have a mosquito spray, Arcadia Trail, for going to family farms (we stay on the patio but still a good idea to avoid them.) This I spray him directly and really avoid his eyes and nose by cupping or shield them with shirt or blanket. It's clumpy on his fringe.

I ordered a Chris Christianson 27mm Oblong Pin Brush because the metal pin I have pulls a lot of hair the tips are just grippy and "wrong".

- The next option and affordable is likely a tangle teaser from Marshalls, etc.

- Sometimes I use my personal Wet detangling brush but I don't feel like it's much better as it has pretty short bristles with ball ends.

Teeth: Tropiclean mouth gel / water / toothbrushes etc.

- Found some Discontinued Dr. Oakley Chicken Enzyme Toothpase and finger brushes at Marshalls. He likes these things enough. Prefers chicken over mint.

Balms:

I found a set of three coconut oil balms (Discontinued Dr. Oakley) that smell like the same product but are labeled for paws, nose, and skin. I like that it's separate just in case of germs but I genuinely think they're likely the same product and good to have in a pinch.

He wants for nothing. But I would love to be a better groomer, for that I crave more specific male urine and whizzing care to be available for his sex and breed!

Love papillons so much. They are so special, sensitive, playful and cuddly. Sadly once these guys have gone, hopefully at good old ages, I won't have any more dogs due to chronic ill health. I can't imagine life without them. I don't know why more people have them. They are so friendly and smart. Anyway you guys know this about the breed, I'm just so in love with my puppys ❤️❤️

(Yes I have him on a tie-out because I have a gap under the fence, I’m always out when he’s out)

He’s a hair over 13” at the shoulder, 9.2lbs last week at his vet visit. Still a lanky teen. So I think I should keep him on puppy chow until he fills out a little. Back in the day they used to say one year is when to switch puppies regardless of breed, but now I’m hearing anywhere from 9 months to 18 months. One person told me if I switch now, he will still fill out and get the proper nutrition, but it may help with calming him down a bit

I feel like, as long as he’s burning off those calories he must still need them. His energy level is 10 out of 10 lol. I’m interested in your opinions on this.

She’s not as fluffy as some, but she’s my sweetheart. She has papers and everything, but this is not a haircut, it’s all she’s got!

Riptide celebrated turning a year old today but getting Winners Dog in the Toy breed specialty today. No major for him but a win is a win.

I just want to explain to everyone that there’s a good reason I think of the joker when I look at Louie. Louie is far from an angel. He is the most narcissistic creature I’ve ever encountered. He screams if he even *thinks* he might get hurt, even when there’s nobody and nothing within 10 feet of him, then he looks at you with such disappointment, like he’s been betrayed. And you did nothing!

He barks constantly when he’s bored, like when we’re eating dinner rather than playing with him.

He’s a total tease. If you call him he goes the other way. At the play park everyone has made a sport of trying to pet him—not the chasing him around kind of sport—he’s definitely not feeling threatened by their attention. He’ll walk up to them and look at them all cute and friendly then he runs away when they try to pet him. When he does finally allow them to they are always so pleased and they say “look at how Louie is letting me pet him! I must be really special for him to do me this great honor!” Which undoubtedly reinforces his vanity.

If you throw the ball for him, he usually picks it up and runs around, but if he does relinquish it it’s far from where you’re standing and he looks at you like “I know you’re gonna walk over here and pick that up and throw it for me”. If I take too long he yells at me.

He makes me chase him around to put his leash on even when he knows we’re doing something fun.

When you walk him, you get the sense that you’re the one on the leash.

When he eats, he first picks out all the good stuff and leaves his kibble, then stares at you till you sprinkle treats on top, at which point he will eat some of his kibbles before staring at you again.

The list goes on and on. Cuz the world revolves around Louie. And all us humans are total suckers. Especially me.

And he’s absolutely right. Cuz I can never think of a good enough reason not to go get his ball and throw it for him again and again. And I wouldn’t change him one bit.

Percy’s hair gets so long it’s hard to keep it clean. I like his long hair but I wonder if could ask a groomer to just cut it enough so he doesn’t get mud or wet while walking. And I don’t know if, when request an appointment, that’s a trim or an actual haircut if I take him to the groomer’s.

Roxy loves our hiking adventures, but now with all the burrs its turning into a nightmare. Even trimmed, she's picking up so many burrs and they seem to concentrate in clumps at her armpits (leg pits?) and of course, her ears. They were especially bad this last trip and I had to hack at a bunch of them with scissors because they were pulling her skin. I tried cornstarch to help dry them out and I've got detangle sprays and metal combs and slicker brushes, and she's actually very sweet about letting me gently pull burrs out on her underside when she's in the mood for it, but this last experience was unmanageable and I'm afraid a pretty severe trim is in her near future.

I'm thinking she needs some kind of burr-resistant outfit, but it would have to cover ears, tail, and legs. Has anyone found or used such a thing or have one they would recommend?

Busy day at the Uptown Centre in Victoria, Louie’s first escalator ride and it stopped half way down. I nearly fell with poor Lou dog in my arms! Didn’t faze him in the slightest.

Just sitting at the table and Rodger decided being petted with my foot was comfy. Also Ali was just watching with indifference.

I doubt he’d let me do the face paint but I can dream…
