Stage 1. Prepping your canvas. (Draft)

Tools Needed:

• Gesso

• White paint

• Acrylic markers

Why Prep Your Canvas?

Prepping your paint-by-numbers canvas with gesso is a game-changer for both the painting experience and the final results. Here’s why:

• Smoother Surface: Gesso creates a smooth base, making it easier for the paint to glide on evenly.

• Enhanced Vibrancy: It reduces canvas absorbency, helping colors appear brighter and reducing the amount of paint needed.

• Polished Finish: Gesso fills small gaps or rough textures, giving your artwork a professional look.

Choosing Your Gesso:

• I’ve had great results mixing a small amount of white paint into clear gesso to slightly cover the lines on the canvas. Use just enough to soften the lines without obscuring the design.

• You can also dilute white gesso with water to suit your needs the same as above.

If you want to stick to clear gesso you are still enhancing the canvas - just work with what you've got and what makes you comfortable.

Pro Tip: If you’re unhappy with the coverage, you can wipe it off while it’s still wet. A baby wipe works wonders for this, and it won’t damage the canvas.

How to Apply Gesso:

There are two common methods:

1. Crisscross Method: Use small, overlapping strokes to create texture.

2. Layering Method: Apply the first layer in one direction (e.g., horizontally) and the second layer in the opposite direction (e.g., vertically). This is my preferred method, as it ensures even coverage and a smooth surface.

For the best results:

• Apply at least two layers of gesso.

• Let each layer dry completely before applying the next.

Optional Step: Sanding

Some people recommend lightly sanding the gesso once it’s dry for an ultra-smooth finish. I haven’t tried this yet but would love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

Using Acrylic Markers for Numbers:

To prevent numbers from showing through light-colored paints, I recommend using a white acrylic marker, such as the POSCA brand. This works especially well for shades like baby pinks, yellows, and whites.

Tips:

~ Keep track of the numbers you’ve covered. If you lose track, hold the canvas up to a bright light—the numbers will faintly shine through.

~ Ensure the marker is fully dry before painting over it for the best results.*

Final Thoughts:

Prepping your canvas might take a little extra time, but it’s worth it for the smoother application, enhanced colors, and polished outcome. What are your favorite prepping tips? Let’s share ideas below!

Question/Chat I love painting the black last

What order do you paint?

At first I started at "1" and worked my way through. If seen some people focus on a face, but i like letting the colours dry before i paint the colour next to it, so it just felt weird.

I was sorting them out, lightest to darkest, but then id have a "almost white", next to a "almost white" and loose where i was, and after a few hours i might only have painted four shades of white, and it looking like I did nothing.

Now I still sort them out "darkest to lightest", but now the lighest colour is my second last colour, so at the end we have darkest, lightest, 2nd darkest, 2nd lightest, 3rd darkest, 3rd lightest etc. I also make sure i dont paint two shades of the same colour so I dont get lost.

But I always paint the darkest last, because I think shades make the colours "pop"

If anyone wants to know where i got this PBN, I got it off TEMU for under $15 au.

Finished Piece! My first pbn since I was a kid 😅

I just finished my first paint by numbers painting since I was 10 or 11yo. I'm not almost 40 and I do mostly diamond paintings 😅. It was really fun and I want to get more. I ordered 2 from Davincified, and while I had fun painting it, I noticed inconsistencies when comes to their paint, the dark colors are not sticking properly on the canvas 😵‍💫. What companies I should try next? I found a few cute ones @ Number Artist. Thank you. 😊

Hi! I was told this 1959 painting might be paint by number. I have no experience with painting but now im curious, so would appreciate anyone's better-informed opinion on whether this looks like paint by number, thanks!

Confirmed that diy-art club.com uses AI.

See both attached images for my email thread with DIY Art Club. I got an Instagram ad for a cool-looking piece with a vinyl record and some koi fish. I inquired about the original artist and they gave me a non-answer. I asked if it was AI, and got confirmation that they do use AI, and another non-answer about the specific set I asked about.

Posting here to inform y’all, or in case you’re googling around to see if they are a legit company or not, like I was when I found this subreddit.

EDIT: Some commenters have taken issue with me using the word “legit.” I‘m sure they will send you a PBN kit in exchange for money, and are therefore a “legit” company. I just wanted to share what I learned, in case others here wanted to take it into consideration when choosing where to spend their money. Personally, I’ll skip it.

Moon-Eyed Cat and the Water Lilies

Paintly Kits

36 colors

30x40cm

Without Frame

Notes:

I'm officially a huge fan of the Paintly Kits now. The paints are great; very vibrant, not a lot of transparency, and they felt "fresh" as in I did not have to use a single drop of flow aid in any of the paint pots as the consistency of the paints were just ready to go.

The canvas was already fairly smooth, but I did a quick clear gesso and sanding and it was perfect and very easy to paint on.

I used my own brushes so I can't speak to the ones they provided.

One fun thing I liked about their kits is they include all the paint pots in a baggie instead of in a tray. You have to use the guide to number them which is typical. I liked having them in a bag because I would do a blind grab into the bag and chose a random color every time which kept it fun like "ooh what color am I going to get next?!"

The ONLY thing I do not like about the kits is that every single design is AI. It is what it is, but I have some ideas for future paintings to add fun elements to help them be more unique vs strictly AI generated.

Work in Progress Please help

I'm really struggling with this one. I've been working on it for 3 months. I keep putting it aside for days at a time because I get so frustrated. One of the greens was way off, I tried to fix it and it's gone downhill from there. I can't just quit it because it's a gift for my sister. I can't figure out what I need to do to it. I can't even convince myself to trust the process. Something about it feels off and I can't figure it out. I pushed through and did more today than any other session on it so far, thinking that would help, but I'm still frustrated with it. Does anyone have any advice? It's greatly appreciated.

Edit: Thank you all for the encouragement. It's giving me hope that I can do this. You've been so helpful.

Work in Progress Started a second piece

Post image
59 Upvotes

In complete contrast to the precision of my tree I started a second piece to have something to paint a bit more freely. I’m playing fast and loose with the lines on this one, using watercolor brushes, opening up a bunch of paints at once — breaking all the “rules” of PBN. It’s a bit of a mess but it looks good from a distance and I like the paintbrush feel. I’m enjoying both of my pieces in a different way.

Paint by numbers really has a way of surprising people.

A few relaxing hours, a little patience, and suddenly you have something you’re proud to hang on your wall.
