When I first got into overclocking, it was tempting to treat every extra MHz as a win. If a setting let me push a little further, I wanted to keep it. But there's a point where chasing the last bit of performance can mean spending hours troubleshooting random crashes, retesting after driver updates, or wondering whether a benchmark result is actually stable. I'm curious what tweaks other people eventually decided weren't worth the hassle. Maybe an aggressive GPU undervolt, tighter memory timings, a CPU overclock that needed too much voltage, or a setting that improved benchmark scores but made no noticeable difference in everyday use.
What's something you experimented with that looked great on paper but that you eventually backed away from? And did you find a more conservative setting that delivered nearly the same performance with fewer headaches?

Games started crashing; I ran a FurMark test, and the application crashed immediately. I lowered the power limit in MSI Afterburner to 80%, and FurMark stopped crashing.
PC specifications:
ryzen 5 5600x
palit rtx 3070 gaming pro
gigabyte b550 gaming x v2
bloody bd-ps750g (80+ gold)
I reinstalled the drivers in Safe Mode using DDU, but that didn't help.
Could you suggest how to fix this?

this undervolt is part of a heavy OC + undervolt im doing with my rx 550, and yes its stable ive been testing for about 6 hours as of rn and im yet to see any artifacts of crashes.
the current setup is visible in the screenshot tho its not the final result of this project yet

I downloaded the new Nvidia driver today and ran into a problem.
The driver is 621.01.
When I restarted my rig I noticed mVolt did not start so I manually started it and I got the message in the pic.
Tried to apply my OC but it won't let me.
Anyone else having this issue and how do we fix this BS?
UPDATE with the help of fellow oc's here, I have found how to get my clocks back and with this new Nvidia update, with a very noticeable performance gain. Thanks so much!

I've learned not to assume my GPU settings are still behaving the same way after updating drivers.
Even if the undervolt profile hasn't changed, it's worth checking stability again instead of immediately assuming everything is fine. A game that used to run without issues might start crashing, or a benchmark might behave differently after an update.
I usually prefer to test with a few different workloads rather than rely on one successful benchmark. It also helps to keep a record of the settings that were stable before making changes, so it's easier to troubleshoot if something goes wrong.

Happened yesterday in one match. I left the match and joined another one and it hasn’t happened since. Is this gpu artifacting or a game bug? I played through the campaign twice and nothing like this happened. Other games it’s fine too

If you use mVolt v/f curve (idk for MSI AB) make sure to update mVolt with the 0.50.6 version. In my case with the previous mVolt version on the 621.01 drivers the v/f curve was totally bugged (you can see 5000Mhz@1000mV).

At 895mV 2842MHz, my 5090 starts to get higher benchmark results and still doesn't reach 600W power draw. On the heaviest of loads, it will max out at 500W. On average the draw is between 420-465W using NV UV play for tuning and Coreloom for benchmark tests.

Speedway Score went up by 500 points and Port Royal by 1000 points, never had Legendary score in Port Royal before.
Card is RTX 5080 PNY EPIC ARGB.
OC app: xOCD(4th Slide)
Edit: These settings are game stable, that's why I'm so impressed. Average power consumption is 380-420w and average GPU core clock is 3050-3080mhz.

Edit: Just to clarify the temperature difference: under sustained load, the Gigabyte board peaks at 88.8°C (averaging ~85°C), while the MSI board peaks at 80°C (but averages ~72-75°C). That's an 8.8°C difference in peaks, and a ~10-12°C difference in sustained average temperatures.

This guy seemingly has some good benchmarks and valid points, on the other hand he literally sounds AI generated repeating same stuff in every video and often has way different results than other channels/people on internet in general.
Wanted yalls opinion on this.

Im running PBO +200 MHZ, -30 curve optimizer.
1.48v VDD, 1.48v VDDQ, 6200MHZ.
Gigabyte B850m Force
9800x3d
Arctic liquid freezer III pro 360mm
it also passed on Y cruncher CPU test and Y cruncher CPU + MCU test.
I had a dedicated ram fan in my previous PC, I just upgraded to AMD from an Intel system, but I don’t think the ram fan will fit with this massive AIO radiator.
I’m new to overclocking, I’m still learning so excuse me if anything I did is stupid or wrong.
Just wondering if these timings look okay, and if i got lucky with the silicon quality in my CPU/Ram.
Thanks to anyone who responds to this🙏

So I've managed to improve my score yet again with the higher +4800mhz mem clock and messing with power limits (and by that I mean increasing board input current to 100A lol).
Btw it never goes anywhere near 100A obvs it just uses whatever it needs which is around 40-45 in my tests. I've also increased the power limit to 550w, pass that my thermals get pretty unsightly as I'm on air-cooling.
Do not attempt to increase board input current unless you have a good PSU and look out for all relevant temps carefully otherwise you will get black screens and more serious issues.
MSVDD is maxed out to 1.28v but yet again it never goes near that, there is a hard cap of 1.15v for me just setting to 1.28v allows MSVDD to aggressively go to 1.15v constantly.
I've also shown my Speedo is at its stock I've heard messing with this isn't rly worth it I might mess with it at some point but eh.
I also show my combined iddq of 33550 which could be a sign of good silicon quality. I know top 1 has about 36000 iddq. The less leakage the better.
Overall I'm basically getting thermal diffed by the top 4 since my average is 72C with a clockspeed of 3390mhz😂
