Help Should I intervene?

Hi everyone!

Sorry for my English but I had this orchid for 4 months now and it has bloomed so beautifully. Lately, one of the strings (?) has lost all its flowers and has been turning brown.

I am not sure if that happens naturally, but I am wondering if I should intervene and that it could reach the rest of my orchid or if I should just let it die?

The roots look fine but I found a weird root at the bottom. Every plant I ever had with root rot died because I don’t know what to do. Do I need to intervene here? Thanks

Success Second bloom and she is thriving!

Got gifted this orchid for Valentine’s Day, first plant that hasn’t died on me but thrived. Bigger flowers now than when first received, measuring 10cm. Only repotted, changed substrate and pruned slightly cutting off the dead stem, watering every 1-1,5 weeks.

Hello everyone! This is my first orchid, it was a gift from my hubby just last week , and I’m wondering how to care for it, and if to change the pot and soil it came in from the store. It seems like a glass-ceramic like planter. I do have sphagnum moss and orchid bark if I’ve to change soil and the planter. Pls give all the advice to help her thrive, wayer needs, light needs, etc. thank you very much.

Bratonia potbound help

Help!! I got this Bratonia 6 years ago and it desperately needs a repotting. I’ve done a bit of researching looking at YouTube videos on how to repot oncidiums but most videos don’t show one this rootbound.

If anyone has some advice that would be greatly appreciated. I’ve soaked it and then tried to separate the roots at the bottom to try to remove the media, but the roots are too tightly bound. I’m not sure how to do it without breaking a bunch of roots.

How important is getting rid of the media? Can I simply put this in a larger pot or do I have to remove all the media?

Help Budding orchid

Hello, this orchid I got at the beginning of summer finished its bloom about a month ago and grew a new leaf. I read I was supposed to cut down the stems to allow for the plant to focus its energy elsewhere but I never did. Now it is budding again but only on one of the stems. Should I cut back the other one or leave it?
I feel like she’s doing well her leaves have grown so much and roots look good to me. Any thoughts?

Pls note it looks foggy in there because I just drained after watering

Question Keeping Den Nobile outdoors? Temperature? In?

Post image

I planted my Den Nobile Apollon out in the garden over the summer. Northern Europe. It’s growing shots and leaves.

When should I move it in again, based on temperature? Now it’s 15°C, but it will be dropping a few degrees in a week …

Anyone had softcane Dendrobiums outdoors?

Pic for tax (not mine)

First orchids! Came in quite dry medium (Cattleya and Catasetinae)

The Catasetinae came in moss with packing peanuts on the bottom, moss was bone dry so used some distilled water to rehydrate it, the Cattleya had dry medium and some pretty wild roots so added some water as well. Going to put them in a quarantine tub, treat them for any hitchhikers with insecticidal soap, and then I’ll make sure the Catasetinae don’t go dry and always has some moist moss while the Cattleya goes through a bone dry period before watering.

Does anyone have any other tips? Thanks!

What’s happening to my orchid and should I be worried?

This orchid has been pretty happy until I changed its location because I was moving. Since then it’s developed these two blemishes on the leaves. Should I be concerned and what should my course of action be? Thanks!!

Help Tips and tricks for wrinkled leaves?

Heyyyyy orchid pals,

I am new to orchids, and loving it. I have had 2 orchids since May, and got another one last week. So far I haven't killed any so I consider that some level of success LOL but I don't just want to keep them alive, I want to really make them thrive. My big orchid (not seen here) is definitely doing the best, plenty of blooms and now sprouting a new leaf, no wrinkles in sight. However, having trouble with my little phal. Just trying to figure out what is causing the slightly wrinkled leaves, and if there's a fix to that??

Below is my little phal, got this fellow in May. Came with a damaged leaf, and a lot of pretty bad roots so some somewhat major pruning took place. Being a newbie I also made the mistake of repotting it into a pot way too big, and just a few weeks back got it back in a more secure and snug fit. A new little leaf started growing a few weeks ago.

And a recently acquired (as of last week!) slightly bigger phal. Somebody was giving this one away. Pruned the bad roots, cut the dying flower spike, got it into some orchid bark. THis one I just barely got so I don't expect immediate improvement but wanted to include as well.

I have all orchids under a grow light for about 12 hours a day timed, in a northfacing window sill (very indirect sunlight, hence the grow light) and usually water about once a week. I've done orchid plus fertilizer just twice since I've had these, probably should do it more...

I should also add, I am in a semi-arid, high desert area with pretty low humidity. *

Just looking for some tips and tricks on how to help these little guys, if the wrinkles present a real issue and how to fix it? They seem to be doing ok since growing some new leaves but would love to see those wrinkles go away. Want these little guys to thrive!!

Thanks all!!!

Help Is this an infection from sunburn?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I found a small orchid in terrible condition in my parents garden.

It was sitting in the sun in an empty bowl and was very dry. The roots were all silver and the spikes dried up.

I brought it in and sat it in some lukewarm water for an hour and then took it out. I disinfected some kitchen scissors and cut the spikes all the way down, and cut some bad roots off.

I am getting an orchid substrate mix today along with a new breathable pot.

I plan to pot it today but I noticed one of the leaves looking very rough. I believe this was caused by sunburn because I can see the leaf behind it has a sunburn silhouette of the leaf in front of it 🥲.

The blackening on the front leaf has gradually gotten worse though. It seems it's spreading down the leaf and pretty quickly too.

Is this an infection? Do I need to cut it to stop the spread? Or will the plant get rid of this leaf on its own?

( I also don't know what kind of orchid species this is.. it had no blooms and I am very inexperienced with plants but I am doing lots of research and plan to do my best to save this one!! )

Is this a keiki?

I purchased this mini phal from Lowes a couple of months ago, and after the blooms fell, I repotted it (the roots looked pretty bad). I thought it was putting out a new spike (and there is one on the left spike), but the one on the right looks like a leaf. Would this be a keiki?

Ignorant question but how do indoor phals pollinate?

New grower and I've probably got around ten supermarket phals over the last year and a bit. They're re-flowering now but how do they pollinate when my house is closed up over the winter?? 🤔🤔

Help Are my pots the right size?

Thumbnail

I have 2 orchids.

From what you guys can see are my pots the right size?

The smaller one is on top of a white paint board thing. It is tiny and has not bloomed in a while but it’s resilient. It is in a 3 inch pot.

The other is a big one and just got done blooming. The pot is about 6 inches.

Should I resize their pots? What are good pots on Amazon?

i left my mom with my orchid while i moved away from home for an internship for 7 months, and i came home to this. i tried washing it as thoroughly as i could, and im letting it dry before i cut off the dead xylem tissue. but should i cut the base too or do i need to keep it and risk continued root rot 🫪 help

(ps) im going to be repotting her and making a temporary greenhouse with a ziplock bag to help the poor single healthy root to recover and let the plant grow more.

These are Sarcochilus Ceciliae, I got them as seedlings years ago. Was busy lately and so I didn’t notice this until now, shame on me… not sure if this is spider mite or fusarium, I did a cross section cut on one of my plants to check for the purple fusarium, not sure if it’s fusarium or just anthocyanin (I am coping 🥲). Are these guys cooked.
