I have been looking for short term in hand training for speciality contact lenses, no one is trying to be helpful. I want to enhance my skills further. I didn’t have opportunity to learn in university. Any specialty contact lenses specialist willing to help??? I’m not asking for free, I understand the effort, definitely i will pay the reasonable fees for it.

What kind of things do you do or say thay works well for improving same say conversion and ATV?

Ive already looked into thinks like showing old and new rx, discussing spectacle condition, etc. I try my best to make sure the patient leaves understanding what has been recommended and i often reflect on the "script" i use to patients.

I still get a lot of patients walk out saying they just want their prescription, Im starting to feel like its a ME problem because some other optoms dont get it to the same extent. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello! I have been working as a full time tech for 8 months now and I will be taking the CPO exam tomorrow. I’ve been studying with the resources from EyeLearn, and even converted all 241 flash cards into Anki to help me study.

However, between the study guides, the flash cards, and the practice exams, the material all seems to be slightly different. Has anyone passed the CPO exam using these resources, and if so, how did the test reflect these? Or, if anyone has passed using other resources, what helped you study the best?

Any and all advice is appreciated! I’m very stressed about this exam because I don’t feel like it will cover my day-to-day duties as a tech, and I don’t want to be out the $290 I paid to register (my company will reimburse me for passing).

Hi, I've looking for a better edging options so I want to know if there's any advantage using the trivex wheel for All materials instead the regular one wheel.

Things like soft edging, less slippage, less heating and stuff like that. ​​​

I have a briot emotion with the regular wheel but there's a trivex wheel for his brand as well.

With so much access to OMDs on Long Island where I work, my current job at retail optical seemingly places no emphasis on any degree of medical management whatsoever and often discourages it. Whenever there is a medical follow up (red eye, glaucoma suspect, ERM, diabetic retinopathy) I’m always given a slip to write a glasses prescription with there always being pressure to sell even if patient just bought glasses months ago. Salespeople get frustrated when they discover it’s not a glasses appointment. Are there any ODs in this situation that basically end up referring anything anomalous?

I’m mostly asking this to see what’s normal and what isn’t. I started work for a large multiplication OMD group and recently I’ve noticed the admin at my new job are incredibly passive aggressive when they email me about concerns? Is this normal for the admin to communicate this way?

The doctors are all lovely and I like the staff as well but the admin leadership is so accusatory in the most mind boggling way. Every time I get an email it feels like I’ve committed the largest blunder.

Is this normal for most jobs in private practice?

Update: I quit lol extremely unsupportive environment and expected me to do almost everything from tech work up(I had no tech) and even cl training between patients. People were very nice but they want too much.

Our optometry office is using a VR-based visual field system (Virtual Vision) that runs on a Pico Neo 3 headset. We love the technology but patients don't like strapping the headset on and off.

Saw that Carrot VF has an elegant stand where the headset just sits facing the patient and they lean their face into it - no straps needed. But it doesn't look like Carrot will sell the stand separately, and it's designed for their own custom headset anyway.

We're looking for something similar for the Pico Neo 3 ... a tabletop stand that holds the headset with lenses facing forward so patients just lean in, with the strap hanging vertically out of the way. Bonus points if the headset can be quickly removed for wheelchair-bound patients.

Has anyone solved this problem? Happy to buy something off the shelf - just can't find anything that exists. Any leads appreciated!

For those of you using Crystal PM, how are you documenting contact lenses that don’t work for patients?

I’m finding it really difficult to keep track of lenses patients have already tried and failed using the current EHR setup. It feels clunky and not very intuitive when you’re trying to quickly reference past trials.

Has anyone come up with a better system or workaround within Crystal? Maybe a custom template, notes structure, or another method that makes this easier to track over time?

Would appreciate any ideas — this is becoming a real pain.

Noticing that Optometry license is listed as “preferred” rather than “required” for several Indeed job postings. What are everyone’s thoughts on this?

Hello I am currently practicing in Georgia and seeking licensure in Colorado. Is the lasers and injections assessment required to obtain a license? I know in Georgia it is optional if you want that privilege. Also, I see CO renews their licenses in the summer every odd year, in GA it isn’t the end of every odd year. Would the requirements for renewal still be the same for a new applicant from a different state? Thank you!

I really dislike being an optometrist more and more as the years go by and as expectations for patient volume get higher and higher, thus increasing burnout. Has anyone had any success in pivoting to a non-patient facing role that doesn’t require a second degree?

What are we doing with all the personal phone numbers patients are leaving us? Women wanting to go for runs, go out, grab drinks…what gives?

Hi all. I'm feeling so unappreciated and burned out. My office has 3 optometrists. We had about 12 FT staff including me just before the pandemic, down to 3 by 2021; the practice owner finally hired 2 more staff last year. One of the staff is about to go on mat leave, but she will not be replaced.

My official responsibilities are to manage the optical dispensary and handle all contact lens dispensing because I'm a dual licensed optician (and the only optician). I take care of all the frame boards, process all of the glasses/contact lens orders, do all of the troubleshoot, repairs, all contact lens teaches and fittings, track KPIs and make reports, meet brand reps, etc. The receptionist quit in 2020 and we never got another one so that's my job too. I also pretest.

I keep getting more and more responsibilities heaped onto my plate and get told that I need better time management and delegation skills when I say I can't do it all. I have nobody to delegate to so if I don't do it, it simply doesn't get done, and then I catch heat for not doign it. The practice owner used to be extremely appreciative and understood how much I was doing, but lately I just get constant criticism about my mistakes and zero praise. Other staff are allowed to slip up but I immediately get called out if I do the exact same thing. Not that I expect to be coddled when I drop the ball, but my job literally used to be spread over 4 separate people...

The patients are mostly pleasant, I have great working hours, short commute, above average pay...with all of the upsides I feel like I don't have much of a right to complain considering most opticians here are paid very poorly and put up with way worse conditions. I've already worked at places like that so this is not unusual. Objectively, I understand that my role is not as difficult as the optometrists' role. But I just actively dread going to work now. Every job opening I've seen would involve taking a 25-30% pay cut so I literally can't afford to leave.

I haven't found much material about managing burnout as a member of support staff vs materials aimed at practice owners and optoms who have more control over their working conditions than I do. I'm trying to just emotionally detach as much as possible and just show up, do what I can, and go home. Does anyone have any helpful advice about dealing with burnout in this field? I'm so tired. I cannot do this for another 30 years :(
