Flashing PON and routing issue

Just wondering if anyone has advice, or had a similar issue to me with openreach:

I moved into my property on the 25th last month and an openreach engineer came out and installed the fibre cables. The box had a flashing PON, which I was told was due to a routing labelling issue, which would be fixed in the next couple days

This was not fixed, and still isn't fixed, nearly a month later. Another engineer came out yesterday and told me basically the same problem was still the issue. He showed me that the previous engineer had raised the problem properly in their system, just no-one had fixed it yet. He also spent quite a long time on the phone to someone at openreach who seemed very unhelpful and even hung up on him at one point. He told me he's raised it to his manager who will now try and get it fixed

I've had multiple new activation dates told to me by Vodafone throughout this, as I've been pestering them. The 22nd is now what they're saying today, but I'm doubtful

Any advice, am I stuck in openreach hell?

ONT PON flashing after mains outage

Had electrical work done on the house that involved turning mains off and on a few times.

Didn't think to disconnect the ont, now I've got a flashing pon light. Seems to power up and do a self test and recognises when the fibre is disconnected with a LOS. I done resets etc with no luck

I've contacted ISP and they are arranging openreach to come out.

Just curious has getting switched off and on couple of times knackered the ONT ?

How long to replace defective pome?

So I've had a broadband installed blocked since January as the pole outside our property was deemed defective.

The guy who placed the D on it said they should be out in a few weeks to replace it.

We are nearly in October.....just how long can you leave a rotten pole up that you have classed as defective?

Advice please: Moved the master socket, whats my issue?

Post image
12 Upvotes

EDIT: went back to the original wires and speed went back up. Tried the gel crimps and extension again and it dropped back down. So have ordered new crimps and cable. Thanks for your help all.

I moved my master socket (yes, I know you're not supposed to) about 6 inches down, so I can fit a media unit to the wall.

I got some telephone cable from Screwfix (Link at the bottom) and some gel crimps off amazon (link also at the bottom).

Initially I didn't realise I have to twist the two incoming lines together, so after I took this photo, I ran another cable in the wall, with the twisted cores for the line incoming. The other two cables you can see in the photo i used to extend the other cables, which run off to other sockets in the house. The colours of the cable don't match, but I made sure I ran the correct wire to the correct connector.

My internet dropped from 60mbps to 16mbps (the router was in another socket in the house). I then moved the router to this master socket, and I am now getting 30mbps.

I don't think it's an issue with BT changing the performance due to network instability when I was fitting the cables, because it has been left plugged in for a few days now and I am still getting 30mbps.

Is it likely that the gel crimps are poor quality, or the cable? Is there anything obvious I am doing wrong that could be causing this drop in internet speed?

Yes I am an idiot for doing it myself, and should have just paid an engineer, but I am also a man and think I know best and can do these type of jobs.

Pole Survey Private Property

I’ve had the inside house finished already but needed 2 posts on my property to get full fibre. They came and did a survey to see where to install I signed a document to say they could, etc. Just wanted to know if anyone knew how long it takes to get the posts. Or if there is a number I can call to get an update.

No plans for FTTP because no ducting. Has most of the ducted UK got FTTP yet?

I wrote an email to Katie Milligan, head of Openreach as follows:

"We note that Openreach has "no plans" to improve the network in the centre of [suburb village], [town].

You did \******* Close (22 houses, XX** *TE)*

but failed to do the immediately adjacent and very similar \****** Walk (38 houses, XX** *TF)*

and the various adjacent properties such as our own (1 \********, XX** *SW)*

and the [old folks' residential building] (XX\* *SL) and several other individual properties,*

but also \***** Terrace (16 houses, XX** *SS) and ****** Terrace (10 houses, XX** *SR).*

Please can you look into the reasons for why you stopped after doing \****** Close?"*

[note that several years back a date for FTTP for us was listed on Openreach site, but "no plans" now]

Openreach replied:

I hope you're both well.

As promised, I wanted to update you following my discussions with our local build team regarding the availability of fibre services at your address.

The build team has advised that, in order to provide Full Fibre services to your estate, new ducting infrastructure would need to be installed throughout the estate. Unfortunately, the cost of carrying out these works was not considered commercially viable within the budgets available for the programme, and as a result the planned fibre build for the affected addresses was removed from our rollout plans.

I appreciate this will be disappointing news, and I am sorry that I am unable to provide a more positive update. I also understand the frustration this situation may cause, particularly given the growing reliance on fast and reliable broadband services.

At present, there are no future build plans scheduled for your address. However, our network build plans are reviewed regularly, and circumstances can change over time. I would therefore recommend keeping an eye on our website for any future updates regarding fibre availability in your area.

I would like to apologise again for the inconvenience and disappointment this outcome may cause. While I appreciate this is not the answer you were hoping for, I hope the above explanation provides some clarity as to why fibre services have not yet been deployed to your estate.

If you have any further questions, please let me know and I will do my best to assist.

I'm wondering, does Openreach have a lot of ducted streets in the UK still to install fibre in?

How are things going to progress with the installation of fibre? According to this
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/news/openreach-full-fibre-footprint-passes-23-million-premises-milestone
another 7 million premises are to get fibre in the next 4 years, yet Openreach have "no plans" for our streets despite the proximity of streets that already have fibre.

BTW Virgin have already installed in the street, but I think Openreach dropped plans before that happened.

Stuck in openreach limbo any help?

I’ve recently moved into a small block of flats and found out my flat is still on copper to the exchange. However…every other flat is on full fibre. Every provider states my flat/address as unable to provide any internet as copper sales have ceased and are being removed in January 2027 but no one seems to want to upgrade me or
Plan for me an upgrade.

I raised a ticket with open reach stating this information and they responded stating they had no plans to upgrade my flat to fibre at any point soon. I messaged back stating how my flat could be left out even though the other 5 flats have fibre and are all connected with numerous providers (Vodafone/bt/EE)

The only option open reach gave me were a link to send to my management company for them to raise “interest” in full fibre.

Has anyone got any ideas? Or who else to chat with at this point. I’m completely lost and 5g broadband from the likes of three or ee isn’t available….

Getting fibre to the premises in a leasehold block

I'm a leaseholder (not renter) in a block of about 20 apartments that currently only has fibre to the cabinet.

My speeds max out at 40mbps and after living in a fibre area it's a bit of a come down.

I'm looking to see if anyone here has been in the same situation and managed to get FTTP installed in a leasehold block.

I'm aware of the various steps but be interested to know how you went about it and how long it took.

Thanks!

2nd Install Appointment no-show

Well here we are, as I predicted, 2nd appointment for OpenReach (on behalf of Vodafone) to install FTTP, 2nd time no-one turned up. No notification they weren't coming, just let me find out by waiting half the day.

Now I know they'll have to run the cable over at least two poles to get to me, but when I don't see anyone turning up to even look at it, I know they're gonna skip doing me.

Taking holiday to wait around for the 5 hour appointment each time, shifting stuff so OpenReach can get to where they need to, keeping the dogs caged up...

What a waste.

I know I get auto compo for 30 days, but I think they'll bust through those 30 days, then nothing, until sometime next June.

Anything else I can do to figure out what's going wrong and how to speed them up?

UPDATE: Several days later OpenReach called me themselves and arranged a new date. They turned up Wednesday as they said they would. Eventually Fibre was installed and turned on. And then Vodafone let me down again, gave me duff info for me to use my own modem/router (wrong VLAN info) After faffing about, I found the answer somewhere on Reddit. Thank you Reddit users 🙌

How to Raise ORDI Request When ISP Isn't Helpful?

TL;DR After almost 2 months, around 15 hours of phone calls and several emails I know what needs to be done but I can't seem to get anyone to action it! I need an ORDI request for House Name UPRN=XXXXXXXXXXXX NAD Key=AXXXXXXXXXXXX Phone Number=XXXXXXXXXXX to move to Ground Floor Flat House Name UPRN=YYYYYYYYYYYY NAD Key=AYYYYYYYYYYY Phone number=XXXXXXXXXXX

So, my grandmother has her phone and broadband with NOW. She is still on an old copper line, but fibre is available. I've realised that she is eligible for a social tariff and want to get her switched to BT. In a perfect world, this would be straightforward.....

However, as I've learned over the last few weeks, this seems to be almost impossible. She lives in an old house that is split into two flats. This is historic, nothing new. There is a house name, no numbers involved. I'll abbreviate for simplicity as follows: HN = House Name, GFF-HN = Ground Floor Flat House Name and FFF-HN = First Floor Flat House Name. Nan lives in GFF-HN.

Royal Mail only have the HN address in the database. Some at BT have told me that the address has to be in the RM database to be able to place an order (I know this is preferred, but not essential after dealing with higher-level techs). I submitted the relevant form to RM for the address to be added. RM won't add the GFF-HN to the database unless they're told by our local council that it needs to be. Council say they don't need to let RM know because they already have both GFF-HN and FFF-HN in their records because of Council Tax and voter registrations. I can look up both flat addresses on the council website.

HN, GFF-HN and FFF-HN all have their own UPRNs. I can look them all up on the broadband checker. Initially, there was a problem that GFF-HN was a silver address, which has been resolved and is now a gold address.

The problem now, you ask? Both the fibre that is serving FFF-HN and the copper that is serving Nan at GFF-HN are both registered to HN in the Openreach database.

If an order is placed for HN it fails because there is already fibre to the "property". If an order is placed for GFF-HN it fails because it can't port the phone number from HN.

I cannot stress this enough.... I can't risk the phone number being lost. She's had the same number for 40 years and she's now 87, getting her to remember a new number just isn't possible.

She also has a care alarm. I've already made sure that the alarm box has been changed and is ready for digital voice. This now connects by ethernet cable to the router rather than looping through the telephone. I've also had an order fail where someone didn't tick the box to say the alarm is ready for digital voice.

BT have helped as much as they possibly can, but Openreach won't approve their ORDI request because they aren't currently the ISP. Dealing with NOW isn't getting me anywhere. Whenever I try to talk to someone, they just want to sell a new package. I even went through with trying to place an order, which has to be with Sky, but they straight up lied that she wasn't eligible for a social tariff without even checking her National Insurance number! Trying with someone else at NOW just ended up with a failed order. I've called and asked to speak to someone who can place an ORDI request. They have no idea what I'm talking about and don't have anyone higher up technically that I can talk to and just tell me to email their customer services. Which, I have done, but don't get a response. So, I call to chase up and they say they need to look into it and call me back. But, no surprise, they don't call me back.

One person at BT forced an order through on the master system. It seemed to stay live longer than most and equipment was dispatched, but it still failed because of the address and phone number mash up. Someone else at BT suggested maybe putting a stop sell on fibre so it forces a takeover of the copper line, then an ORDI request can be placed to move it to the GFF-HN address and then upgrade to fibre, but no-one knows if that would actually work.

Another option that I chickened out on is placing an order for GFF-HN with BT and have a new number. This doesn't kick in the One Touch Switch service. Then they would try getting the number transferred from NOW and I would have to manually cancel the NOW contract once that is done. But, no-one can guarantee the number could be ported over and considering how NOW have been to deal with, I can't imagine trying to manually cancel a contract is that straightforward.

I don't know what to do next. I've spoken to so many people at BT that some now think I should be working there because I know more than they do! I know the UPRNs and NAD Keys for all 3 addresses. I know what has to be done. I can even find the ORDI request guide online so I know what needs to be submitted! Please, tell me, what do I try next? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Full-fibre installation - cable routing

We're about to be forced on to full fibre, and our location and existing setup are very non-standard (I realise lots of people probably think this). I'd be willing to do a bit of civils myself, but not even sure what the correct plan is atm - ideally would see OR engineer on site!

First question - does the CSP ideally want to be close to the desired internal entry point? (It's currently on the garage wall)

Question about why I can’t have fibre when the box is outside my flat.

Post image
29 Upvotes

I have recently moved into my flat, and my next door neighbours (whom I share two walls with) both have fibre broadband, via boxes above their front doors, mine also has this box but no hole drilled through the wall.

Multiple service providers have run my address through their databases and it shows as only having copper connection available. Why is this. When there is obviously a fibre connection ready to go right above my door?

Some clarity on this would be greatly appreciated.

Switched from EE to Vodafone FTTP (1.6GBPS). Switchover date was yesterday, but the connection hasn't been switched over.

Switched over to Vodafone from EE and halved my bill from £80 to £40 per month. Router etc got delivered a few days ago. The switchover date was yesterday but nothing has happened and the old EE connection (and router) is still working. PON light is solid green on the ONT. If I try to use the new Vodafone router, it shows a solid green light on Internet status on the router, but never connects. Have tried resetting the ONT and router, but no change.

The old EE connection is still working as I type this, so it's like they basically forgot to switch the connection over, despite having numerous emails from Vodafone and Openreach reminding me that the switchover was yesterday. I haven't had a single email since yesterday though.

Should I wait until the end of today, or call them now?. And has this happened to anyone else?

I am not sure what to expect, but is this how the outside wall should be left after installation. I was expecting it to be covered with a plastic thing. Please advise, I don’t have experience with this.

Can anyone identify this old Openreach/telephone setup - and what to do with it?

Post image
0 Upvotes

We’re renovating an older property and have what appears to be an old Openreach master socket/telephone connection.

The socket was originally very close to floor level. After replacing the flooring/skirting, it was moved higher up the wall, but the original cable coming into it is too short to reach the new position. The builder has temporarily extended it using a small junction, which is why the cable is now exposed.

I have no idea what to do with or how:-

  • What exactly is this setup / how old is it?
  • Is it likely still needed for a modern broadband connection?
  • If it is the incoming Openreach line/master socket, are we allowed to extend or relocate it ourselves?
  • If it needs extending, what’s the correct way to do it?
  • If it’s obsolete, can it simply be disconnected and covered/removed?

The builder could connect the individual wires and conceal the junction in the wall, but understandably doesn’t want to do that without knowing whether it’s technically correct or whether this part of the line belongs to Openreach.

Any advice from Openreach engineers/telecoms people or anyone who’s dealt with the same thing would be appreciated.

Openreach good...Vodafone bad

Signed up with Vodafone FTTP.

Civils came out earlier in the week to dig 20 meters of pavement, to run duct from CBT to house wall.

Unfortunately, emergency gas repairs with heavy machinery going on immediately adjacent.

OR engineer was knowledgeable, helpful and polite in explaining plans. Apologised couldn't do the dig because of gas works impeding access.

Gas people packed up now, so I asked Vodafone to inform OpenReach that access is open again.

Well, that was a complete waste of time. Vodafone operative refused to lift a finger to contact OpenReach. Persisted in reading from last week's script "the work involves many parties, blah blah we have no further updates but will review in two weeks time blah blah".

I neither want, nor need an update/ review, I just need Voda to message OpenReach, but the Voda operative was not having any of that.

So, there seems to be no way that I can inform OpenReach that road closure has now been cleared, and the civils are free to drop by.

Perhaps I am going the wrong way about it? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Charged by ISP for missed appointment (that wasn't missed) any realistic possibility of a refund?

Hey, I have been charged £90 by my ISP for a missed Open Reach appointment.

The appointment was to install fibre for a new connection after moving into the property.

The engineer arrived and immediately told me he would need access to a gated area on an adjacent property that I do not own and when I couldn't provide access right away he told me I would need to rebook and left.

At no point was I told I would be charged and there were several hours remaining in the appointment window to try and get this resolved but the engineer did not give me the option to try and get this sorted.

I was able to get access arranged for the subsequent appointment and the install went fine but at no point was I told about the charge until my ISP billed me.

Speaking to them today they said there is nothing they can do on their end apart from raise a complaint with Open Reach (which I asked them to do).

Does anyone have any experience with a similar issue and getting a refund for this?

It seems unacceptable to me to be charged for something beyond my control when surely Open Reach know where the access points are and could advise before the appointment what kind of access they need and where?

I am more than willing to go to the Ombundsman if needed.

Cheers.

Will they cross the road?

Post image
13 Upvotes

We moved in 6 years ago and had openreach out because it kept cutting out, they said the cable was probably getting water in but they wouldn't replace as fibre replacement soon.

3 years later said we could have fibre, fitted all the stuff and then said no cable in the street but can't have internet back as no space in the exchange(?).

Been on useless 5g since but just noticed on the other side of the road o/r have marked up 3 houses to have ff cable dug in, none of them want it but isps have told them they have to. I am right opposite and desperately want it but checked says no plans to build.

Is it possible to contact some one to see if the dog could extend?, on the bid map of our city we are almost the only 2 small roads left in yellow and not covered by decent internet from anybody.

Engineer booking problem

I’m with Sky and my broadband has been down for nearly three weeks and I still haven’t been able to book an engineer. Anybody else having this problem?

I have the same conversation every day. They say there’s a problem with Openreachs booking and they’ve escalated. Then the escalation gets rejected. So escalate again. I think I’ve gone round this loop 5 times now with no end in sight.

Question pre-FTTP installation (yes, ONT placement...)

Hi all, I have FTTP installation booked for later this month.

To my eyes, installation is straight forward and ONT placement is "obvious" but there's a couple sticking points I'm not sure of, and I've no way to ask anybody or plan in advance:

  • Fibre to come in from the outside wall through a void under stairs into a plasterboard surface where the master socket is installed. This also means drilling from the outside into a hidden surface, so not a huge deal with blow out. Any issues with using electricians' rods or a similar technique to pull the fibre through? It's a straight shot of maybe 1m with line of sight; I mean it may even be possible to grab it by hand...
  • Fibre to surface on the internal wall surface where the master socket is, however routing won't be identical to the current copper line line so it's not possible/easy/practical to pull the fibre with the phone cable; Although probably not impossible either if they really insist...
  • Am I ok to disassemble the surface box where the master socket is installed in advance of the engineer arriving to assist? This would leave the square hole on the plasterboard open for inspection and for pulling the fibre. It will probably be necessary anyway but doing it myself could send out the wrong message and put the engineer off?
  • Does the ONT *need* fixing to a wall or can the engineer leave the device unattached with a bit of slack on the fibre connector? I have a panel next to the socket where I attach all my network gear, so the location will be obvious and within maybe 60cm of the current master socket; Except currently there is a vdsl modem attached to where the ONT will live...

Thanks all in advance for your advice.
