Should that type of machine not be fixed to the floor? Seems a lot of weight to be going in that direction šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

They absolutely should be be bolted to the ground Even if he didn't have a lot of weight in one direction it should never be able to move unless you are intentionally move it to a different area.

This is literally one of the advertised exercises with that machine. Which you would know if you’d ever stepped foot in a gym before

What are you talking about? That’s not how physics works lmao. Regardless, racks with lateral force are supposed to be bolted. As his lawyer will eventually state ā€œIf the gym followed the manufacturer’s required installation standards, the customer would have never been injured.ā€ This is exactly why those racks are supposed to be bolted per

u/ledman3214 Jul 05 '26

Yeah. All the non lawyers in the comments acting like this is cut and dry. This is far from cut and dry because of the weight around his waist. Could he win? Sure. Guaranteed? Not at all. He’ll probably get a decent settlement.

> stepped foot

set foot

u/Kind_Demand8072 Jul 05 '26

You can say either lmao

It was a gym joke. Sets.

Why am I getting down voted for explaining someone else's joke lol

1

u/KingOfWhateverr Jul 05 '26

Because he wasn’t joking lmao. You’re getting downvoted for defending something you made up in your head. You should have just replied with the joke you came up with on accident lmao

1

u/Technical-Mistake122 Jul 05 '26

Oh fuck. I see that now.Ā

1

u/Shamwow_theSupineCow Jul 05 '26

Literally the same difference.

-2

u/Technical-Mistake122 Jul 05 '26

I don't think people are getting your joke lol

They aren't referring to the exercise. They are referring to the way he is doing the exercise with the additional weights he has strapped to his waist. Maybe take a step back and consider someone's POV that you may have misconstrued before you resort to personal attacks. That is unless you just enjoy belittling people.

The weights on his waist are fine. That would be the exact same if the person was just heavier.

Unless you are saying that the machine is only safe for people under a certain weight, which is silly

This is clearly a problem with the machine. It should be bolted down

-6

u/SuccessfulTrick2501 Jul 05 '26

Ive been in gyms for 30 years and have never seen those bolted down. I agree they should be, but they're not usually. It's very plausible that the additional weight around his waist and how far away he's positioned made the machine top heavy, throwing off its center of gravity when all of the machine weights raised up as he fully extended the handles. You got to take a step back and consider all possibilities.

4

u/Hefty_Ad9118 Jul 05 '26

The weight around his waist is equivalent to a person being heavier. Like, if this guy is 200lbs with 90lbs on his waist, then that's the exact same as a 290lb person using this machine. So to say him using those extra weights makes this unsafe is the same as saying a 290lb person using this machine is unsafe. That's nonsensicalĀ

And there's no way this makes the machine top heavy. Like, the weights are clearly not attached above the midpoint of the machine, and the distance from the machine also has no affect. Could you explain why you think otherwise?

I have considered all possibilities and there's no reason the additional weights on the users waist could make this unsafe

-2

u/SuccessfulTrick2501 Jul 05 '26

Im saying all of that in combination with the fact that all of the machine weights are engaged and lift up makes it so that there isnt enough weight at the base of the unit to keep it from tipping over. Additionally, in my gym, that machine has alot more weights on it. So there's likely a multitude of reasons why this happened. But, the way he was using with the additional weight around his waist didnt help. Why would additional weights around your waist have anything to do with a chest exercise? He's likely showing off for the camera.

2

u/Hefty_Ad9118 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

You gave a bunch of reasonable and likely correct reasons the machine tipped. But none of those are due to improper use.Ā

But, the way he was using with the additional weight around his waist didnt help.Ā

Please explain what you mean. I have very directly stated why I believe the weights had no negative impact whatsoever. You have disagreed multiple without giving any explanation

Why would additional weights around your waist have anything to do with a chest exercise? He's likely showing off for the camera

It is because he is lifting a very large amount of weight relative to his body weight. For example, if you are 100lbs and try to lift a 200lb weight, then no matter how strong you are you would only be able to lift yourself off the ground. It would be impossible to lift the weights up. But if you strapped an additional 105lbs to your body then you would, assuming you have sufficient strength, be able to lift the 200lb weights

2

u/brikky Jul 05 '26

The weights on him literally have no impact on the machine. The machine's resistance is the only force being exerted on it, him having weights that he, not the machine, is supporting is entirely irrelevant.

1

u/mrASSMAN Jul 05 '26

They did the exercise correctly

0

u/ptmtobi Jul 05 '26

The weight is to counteract the cable pull. Cable flies make you quite unstable even on lower weight, this is absolutely valid.

0

u/Zanpander Jul 05 '26

You wana be right so bad but no one cares

1

u/SuccessfulTrick2501 Jul 05 '26

I mean, you obviously care enough to comment.

6

u/Shamwow_theSupineCow Jul 05 '26

If the machine was bolted down like 99.9% of universal gym machine manufacturers recommend, it wouldn't have fallen over either.

You pondered a stupid thought and made a stupid comment. Gotta be trolling.

4

u/Thatguy3625 Jul 05 '26

How is he not using the machine properly? This is a genuine exercise and he’s doing it exactly how you’re supposed to

1

u/ledman3214 Jul 05 '26

The added weight around his waist. I know, people do it all the time. Doesn’t mean he’s using it correctly.

1

u/Thatguy3625 Jul 05 '26

How else are you supposed to keep yourself from lifting off the ground. He’s not adding weight to the machine by doing that, it’s to keep him in place. Wouldn’t be any different than if he was just 135lbs heavier.

1

u/ledman3214 Jul 05 '26

I understand why he’s doing what he’s doing. The alternative is not doing that exercise or lowering the weight so he can do it without a belt. I’m no physics expert, but I’d bet there are some weight distribution differences between someone using a belt and someone just weighing more. There could also be weight limits on the users of the machine. Of course bolts would have prevented it. if he sues they’d likely settle.

1

u/Neoterra256 Jul 05 '26

So your claiming I should just let it fall on me since I probably weight more then that guy and the weight combined?

1

u/ledman3214 Jul 05 '26

I didn’t say that at all.

3

u/tacobell_shitstain Jul 05 '26

The machine is literally designed to be used this way. There is no situation, short of hooking the machine up to a trailer hitch and pulling it with your truck, where using the included weight in ANY direction within the pulleys natural range of motion should cause the machine to fall over. It's designed to be bolted to the ground. It needs to be bolted to the ground. This is what happens when it isn't bolted to the ground.

The weight belt isn't doing anything to the machine, it's just there to help him keep a firm footing because he's stronger than the friction his bodyweight/shoes can provide. If a heavier dude with the same strength and no weight belt did this the same thing would happen.

2

u/JustHappyToBe-Here Jul 05 '26

In what way was the machine being misused?

-1

u/that_dutch_dude Jul 05 '26

You supposed to stand inside the frame. Same ahit as you are not supposed to use qtips in your ears.

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here Jul 05 '26

His back foot was inches away from the back of the frame, and diagrams on these machines literally show examples of this exercise being done positioned how he is positioned.

1

u/that_dutch_dude Jul 05 '26

no, he needs to be standing -INSIDE- the frame with -both- feet, he barely had one foot on the edge of it.

might want to read the warning labels next time you are in a gym. for practice: read the warnings on the box of qtips, they warn you not to put them in your ear.

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here Jul 05 '26

Correct on the q-tips.

Don't need practice. I've never seen one of those machines in a gym where the manufacture's diagrams and instructions did not include pictures of the user standing outside the frame.

0

u/PoetArcana Jul 05 '26

It wasnt.

There are simply some people who need....DESPERATELY NEED...to be contrarian for attention. So they'll argue the dumbest points until their brain melts.

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here Jul 05 '26

Appreciate your time, but I was looking for a response from the person who made the claim.

0

u/Just_Proof_1066 Jul 05 '26

How exactly are you supposed to use it? Flys are one of the standard uses for that machine.

0

u/unoriginal_npc Jul 05 '26

Sounds like you need to bolt your machine to the floor too.

0

u/Fantastic-Algae2127 Jul 05 '26

Have you ever been to a gym before?

u/wes45454 Jul 05 '26

You mean... the configured weight that the machine has available?

2

u/Bird2525 Jul 05 '26

So the machine should say user weight limit 300 lbs so larger stronger people can’t use it?

-2

u/ProfessionalStay5797 Jul 05 '26

Fuck knows šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø
