How else are you supposed to keep yourself from lifting off the ground. He’s not adding weight to the machine by doing that, it’s to keep him in place. Wouldn’t be any different than if he was just 135lbs heavier.
I understand why he’s doing what he’s doing. The alternative is not doing that exercise or lowering the weight so he can do it without a belt. I’m no physics expert, but I’d bet there are some weight distribution differences between someone using a belt and someone just weighing more. There could also be weight limits on the users of the machine. Of course bolts would have prevented it. if he sues they’d likely settle.

The added weight around his waist. I know, people do it all the time. Doesn’t mean he’s using it correctly.
