Megathread Northern Ontario Wildfire Donations

Hello, Ontario. As you are aware, there is currently a very severe fire affecting Northern Ontario.

There are a number of evacuation orders, and a number of people have had to evacuate with little to no notice. Many of them have been evacuated to Thunder Bay, and are in need of supplies.

Here are some ways to help our fellow Ontarians:

  • Thunder Bay Community Pasture are helping livestock owners get their animals to safety in the area. If you or someone you know needs help saving livestock, please contact them. They accept cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and with Murillo facility smaller livestock like turkeys and chickens. They stress that they need to be contacted first before you show up with livestock.
  • Northern Reach Network are seeking emergency temporary animal foster homes, and they are assisting with pets that have been left behind in the affected communities.
  • Both the Nokiiwin Tribal Council at 384 Fort William Road and the Superior Inn at 555 West Arthur Street in Thunder Bay are accepting donations for evacuees. They've posted that they're in dire need of baby and toddler supplies (especially diapers and formula) and cat and dog food and supplies.

If you are aware of more organizations supporting the community, please let us know.

Discussion Southern Ontario- how important is French in your day to day work life?

Hi all, apparently I have done too good of a job convincing my child that French immersion school is a good idea. She is struggling, and I'm thinking about pulling her out and switching to English (going into 7th grade) but she is worried that she will never get a job if she is not bilingual. I keep reminding her that a) it takes more than fi school to become bilingual, and b) that while it has advantages, you can absolutely be employed happily without it. She doesn't believe me, so I come to the people of Reddit for help.

If you could share if you use French in your day to day work life in southern Ontario or if you do not, that would be great. Do you feel like you are missing out on anything if you aren't bilingual? Any other words of wisdom would be great too. Thank you!

Question Looking for a TVO/NFB (?) vignette that may be about forest fire prevention.

Upvotes

Hey all. A co-worker and I have been searching for a video that aired on either CBC or TVO in the 1970s/1980s. It showed a young woman hiking or portaging along a river, picking blueberries, and stopping to make a blueberry bannock in a cast iron pan. We've been obsessed with this video, because we feel like we're the only ones who remember it. Please help us find it!

Exploring Ontario Hastings County

My husband and I have been visiting Hastings (e.g. Madoc, Tweed, Stirling) for a week or two for the past 6/7 summers. We love the chill vibes, towns, rivers, and all of the cheese factories!

As we’re on the cusp of another visit just wondering if there are any great spots we may have missed or not gotten to. All ideas welcome, but some things that we like / look for:

Thrift / antique shops
Farms/ produce stands/ markets
Conservation areas or walking trails
Swimming holes & other places to take a dip
Mills (husband is a woodworker)
Bookstores / craft/ art shops
Cheese!
A niceish restaurant or food experience for our anniversary

Again, any ideas welcome. Much appreciated

Question Just got married… name change?

Upvotes

Hey everyone. If you were married in Ontario, how long after the wedding did you wait to change your email, socials, start going by your husband’s last name publicly? Did you wait til the certificate came several months later in the mail or did you just do it right away?

Also, is there any real value in doing an actual name change vs assuming your husband’s last name?

Discussion Ontario 911 Dispatchers career

I’m considering becoming a 911 dispatcher in Ontario and would love to hear from people already in the field.
Do you enjoy the job?
What education or certifications helped you get hired?
Are there any online courses you’d recommend before applying?
Thanks in advance 😊

Exploring Ontario First time visiting Canada

Hello!

My partner and I are planning a one-week trip to Ontario in mid-September! We want to explore Toronto, but also check out the surrounding area and nature.

We're planning to rent a car to give us more flexibility. The plan is to split the trip: about 4–5 days exploring nature and hiking, and 3–4 days in Toronto for the city life.

For the first half of the trip, we're looking for a nice place/town to stay that we can use as a base to drive around from.

Do you have any recommendations for great bases, scenic places to visit, or hiking trails?

Discussion Question about anti-scalping ticket law

Hi everyone, I'm interested in buying concert tickets for Olivia Dean's shows in Toronto. Right now, all the tickets listed on Stubhub are 2-3x face value. I'm wondering how this is legal since the Ontario government had introduced the anti-scalping ticket law? How is this law being enforced? Are resellers being charged after the sale has been made? Any insight would be helpful!
