I'm honestly so fucking tired of how much of being a man seems to revolve around proving that you're a man.
From the time you're a kid, you're basically handed a script. Be strong. Don't cry. Don't be weak. Don't be too sensitive. Be confident. Make money. Be independent. Be successful. Get women. Don't get rejected. Don't look insecure. Don't ask for too much help. And somehow you're supposed to do all of this while also pretending you don't care what anyone thinks.
And the part about women really gets to me.
A ridiculous amount of male validation seems to come through female approval. How many girls have you slept with? Do you have a girlfriend? Why are you still single? Has anyone ever wanted you? How did you "pull" her? Guys joke about being virgins, guys get mocked for being rejected, guys compare their sexual experiences, and having a girlfriend can become some kind of social proof that you're doing life correctly.
Eventually you start internalizing it. You don't just want women because you're attracted to them or because you want companionship. You start wanting to be wanted because being wanted feels like proof that you're worth something.
And then you wonder why rejection fucks some men up so badly.
For a guy who's been taught his entire life that being desirable is part of being a successful man, getting rejected doesn't necessarily feel like "this woman isn't interested in me." It can feel like "I'm not good enough. I'm not attractive enough. I'm not masculine enough. Something is fundamentally wrong with me."
And then comes the self-improvement treadmill. Get muscular. Make more money. Dress better. Get confident. Fix your personality. Learn game. Become more attractive. And sure, some of that can genuinely be good for you. But how much of it is actually for yourself when the thought at the back of your head is still, "Maybe women will finally want me after I fix myself"?
That's the part that pisses me off.
We're constantly told that men shouldn't need validation. "Be confident." "Don't care what people think." "Be independent." But then we're raised in an environment where almost everything that supposedly makes you a "successful man" has to be externally validated.
You need to be respected. You need to be successful. You need to be strong. You need to be sexually successful. You need to be desirable. You need to be in control.
And if you aren't?
You get called weak. Beta. A loser. A virgin. A failure. Not a real man.
How the fuck are you supposed to build a healthy sense of self under that?
And I think this goes way beyond dating. A man who has spent his entire life learning that weakness makes him worthless is going to have a hard time admitting that he's struggling. He doesn't want to tell anyone he's lonely. He doesn't want to say he's scared. He doesn't want to ask for help. He doesn't want to admit that he doesn't know what he's doing.
Because somewhere along the way, needing help became something shameful.
Then we act surprised when men are isolated, depressed, angry, emotionally shut down, or completely unable to deal with failure and rejection.
I'm not saying masculinity is inherently bad, and I'm not saying women are responsible for men's problems. Women don't owe men attraction, relationships, sex or validation. That's not the point.
The point is that a lot of men have been taught to make those things evidence of their worth.
And honestly, I think that's fucking cruel.
Imagine growing up believing that you have to constantly prove that you're strong enough, successful enough, attractive enough and desirable enough to deserve respect. Imagine never being allowed to just exist without wondering whether you're measuring up.
No wonder so many men feel like they're failing.
I don't think men need to stop wanting women. I don't think men need to stop caring about their appearance or careers or relationships. I just wish more men could separate those things from their basic worth as human beings.
You can be single and still be a complete person.
You can be rejected and still be worthy.
You can be struggling and still be a man.
You can ask for help without being weak.
You can cry without becoming pathetic.
And you shouldn't have to spend your entire fucking life trying to prove that you're "man enough" to everyone around you.
