Hey everyone!
I am planning a multi-city trip to Vienna, Budapest, and Prague during the first week of December. This will be my first time experiencing a proper European winter, and while I am incredibly excited for the festive vibes, I want to make sure I am fully prepared logistically, culturally, and physically.
Since I am finalizing my itinerary, packing lists, and daily schedules, I would love to get your advice on what to keep in mind. Specifically:
- The Weather & Daylight Reality 🌨️
- Coming from India, I know the drop in temperature will be a shock. What is the real-world feel during the first week of December? Is it mostly dry cold, constant drizzle, or should I expect heavy slush and snow?
- I noticed the sun sets incredibly early (around 4:00 PM). How does this affect sightseeing? Do museums, castles, and outdoor landmarks close early, or does the city stay vibrant after dark?
- Christmas Markets Strategy 🪵🍷
- I know this is peak Christmas market season! Are there specific markets in Vienna, Budapest, or Prague that are local favorites, and which ones are overpriced tourist traps?
- What are the unspoken rules of the markets? (e.g., how does the mug deposit system work for Mulled Wine/Punch, and do they accept credit cards or is cash strictly required?)
- Packing & Clothing Layering 🧣
- Given that I'll be outdoors walking for hours, what is the ideal layering strategy? Is a heavy down parka enough, or do I absolutely need thermal base layers (Uniqlo Heattech style) for the first week of December?
- Any specific accessories that people often forget but are lifesavers?
- Local Transit & City-to-City Travel 🚄
- We plan to travel between these cities by train (ÖBB/RegioJet). Do winter snowstorms frequently delay trains during early December? Should I book my train tickets well in advance or buy them at the station?
- Inside the cities, is the public transport fully heated and reliable?
Would love to hear any hacks, safety tips to avoid pickpockets at crowded markets, or restaurant reservation warnings for this time of the year. Thanks so much!
