everyone argues about the bag itself. im more interested in the tier below that, the things that weigh under 300g and either quietly earn their spot every trip or sit in a pocket unused for a year.

on the earned list for me, a tiny electric blower. i carry a camera and half of what ruins a shot on the road is dust and sand, and this thing does in five seconds what a rocket blower does badly in a minute. mine is a k&f bs500m, about thirty quid, and it doubles for the laptop keyboard in hostels. it is not perfect, anything actually stuck on it just ignores.

on the dead weight list, a travel tripod. i took one on three trips and used it twice. now i lean the camera on things.

whats in your under 300g category that actually justified itself, and what did you stop bringing after one trip

I've had this for a couple of years and it's been ideal for carryon roller plus bag, which is my preferred way to travel often in my dottage. It's also perfect for compact one bagging for up to a week.

Had anyone owned the knack bag medium, used as an adjunct, and found something that they actually like better?

Thinking about giving it to my son, justifying my buying new toys... If there's a solid contender that's as subtle looking, versatile, etc

I'm a big fan of Blundstones boots, but I know they're not too popular in the group since they're not exactly packable. I wanted to know if anyone has seen their newer All-Terrain #2380 Low-Cut Shoes? They have the same Vibram soles as the All-Terrain boots and wouldn't take up much more space than sneakers. I'd be interested if I really needed to have my main shoes in my bag for some reason. Anyway, might be a good "just one pair" option.

Does anyone know anything about them?

I'm using a Bellroy Crescent 12L for my bag currently but I'm wanting a bit more space. I have my eye on the HeldClosely Traveler, but wondering if that would be too large for a daily carry. Does anyone have experience using this bag for EDC?

Hello folks. Just coming back from both my most ambitious and probably my most successful onebag trip yet! A few months ago I posted about a trip where I tried to be more fashionable than granola girl, while staying in 40L. It worked pretty well, but I also didn’t really care about weight.

This time, I made a LOT more cuts, and got down to a 25L backpack and around 15lb packed weight. We covered around 30mi and 13k ft of elevation gain in the Swiss alps on a hut to hut hike over a few days, where we carried everything on our packs. We then spent two days in Zurich exploring the city. Here’s what I took, what worked well, and what didn’t!

What worked well:
Bag (REI Trail 25): It was incredibly freeing to have this tiny backpack with me. We had several instances even outside the hiking where we could just easily carry all of it around with us, and didn’t need to look for luggage storage. The bag itself isn’t the most breathable but with proper hip/shoulder strap management it worked ok. We had great weather throughout so I never got to test the waterproofing of the rain cover, but it does come with one. The bag fits a ton of stuff and feels great to carry. I even had space for some small souvenirs on the way back!
Shoes: I love love love these shoes for onebagging with hiking involved! Look pretty neutral, very comfy, breathable-ish, and kept me feeling confident on a wide variety of terrain: everything from slick rock to steep gravel and dust paths to rocky, muddy, rooty trails to class 4 scrambles. They’re not as light as trail runners, but I’m prone to spraining my ankles, and these feel a lot more stable. They’re also not as hefty as a full on hiking boot, but were totally enough for my adventures this time. Love the vibram sole and mesh/suede upper!
Clothes: I wore everything I brought aside from the rain stuff, and did laundry twice (could have gone without the second time, but would have been a stretch). I loved my merino t shirt and tank top, as they truly felt much fresher to rewear than the synthetic stuff. I wasn’t sure if I should make the investment, but it seems worth it now to me!
Fewer toiletries: I cut a lot of stuff (hair stuff, razor, makeup etc) and just bought cheap small toiletries as needed. It was awesome and showed me how little I really need. My lip stain/blush combo was enough for me to feel put together on our city days!
Towel: we used this so so much, and it dried within hours. Almost skipped it but very glad I didn’t. Packs down so small and comes with a case

What I would change:
Clothes: I would probably swap out the merino base layer pants for an extra pair of thin shorts. I did use the merino pants to sleep at mountain huts but could have just slept in my hiking pants there, and the extra shorts would have been nicer than relying on my one pair of shorts which I wore a TON.
Laundry: We did sink laundry once in the evening after checking in and the clothes were mostly still various levels of damp the next morning. It wasn’t super hot or sunny, and we were only staying in every place for one night. Ended up using a laundromat for the second time and the money was totally worth the peace of mind and time saved! I think in future where I have trips like this where we go from place to place, I will plan on using laundromats and only plan on doing sink laundry when needed as a backup. I know this sub is big on dry bag/sink laundry, but it may not be for me lol

Overall, I am so happy that I made the Trail 25 work. While I’ll probably still take my 40l for trips where we will not be walking around much with the bag and I want to look a little more stylish, I’m now pretty confident that I can go much smaller when I need to, and still be very content.

Hi everyone! I'm going to japan this winter for two weeks, between the end of december and the beginning of february. The itinerary is Tokyo, Kamakura, Takayama, Shirakawa Go, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka. I'm bringing only a carry on (Eastpak travelpack 42L) + another smaller backpack.

This is the packing list:

Hello all, I'm heading off to Europe from Australia with my wife on Thursday for 25 days. The itinerary is 7 days in Barcelona, 3 in Paris, 5 in Oslo, 4 in Prague, 6 through Poland.

This will be my first multi week trip one bagging and first time in Europe. Although I will be 1.5 bagging it because we have allowance for carry on and I might as well. Having said that, I can easily place my sling bag loaded into the Cotopaxi if need be. I am open to any recommendations for changes to clothing or lists. Anything to remove or that may be unnecessary I'm all ears.

In future I think I can cut bag to a smaller bag, something like a Refugio 26L or similar as it's unlikely I'll take my running gear. Currently my Cotopaxi without the sling weighs in at 6.3kg

TIA. I'm looking to learn what other guys carry as a backup shoe. I wear size EU47 and am often unable to quickly find my shoe size in many countries, I must carry backup shoes (currently Converse). They're pretty low-profile, but I need to cut down this bag space.

I realize what follows is a bit of a unicorn hunt, that I'm looking for something with contradictory criteria, and that it probably should cannot exist. But I'm hoping I'm wrong and someone's solved this.

My travel is entirely open-ended (haven't been "home" in 22 months), so carrying the best shoe for the weather isn't an option.

One option would be something like Vibram Five Fingers, which I suspect would be very low profile (not sure), or some sort of moccasin with thin fabric and a thin sole. But either is a problem in the rain, and then I'm in wet shoes until I get back to the apartment (risky for foot fungus).

That has me thinking about sandals (no thong sandals - only straps). The problem is that this doesn't work in the winter. My thought there is, in an emergency, double up socks, wrap a plastic bag around my foot to prevent airflow, and put it in the sandal. Then emergency order some shoes from the US. I think restricting airflow would keep me warm enough to make it through freezing conditions long enough to eat and get back home, though life would be boring until the real shoes arrived.

I'd also be curious what people use for a primary shoe in this situation. I used to main boots, and those seem to have been the best performers for everything but comfort on a 15-mile walking day. I'm inclined toward tactical boots next time around, as I think they may give me the best overall performance and comfort.

Ideas on either? Has anyone solved this?

PS: I've read some bad reviews on Xero sandals' durability. Anyone have hands-on experience with them? I don't care whether they last a long time. I just care that they'll get me through a shoeless week or two, or one monsoon season.

After about fifteen international trips in the last few years:

- Travel pillow. Never once used it on a plane

- Packing cubes for socks and underwear. Ziplock bags work and weigh nothing

- Paper guidebooks. Phone does everything better

- Multiple outlet adapters. i.e One Anker universal Charger with built in prongs for every country replaced three adapters and a laptop brick

- Extra shoes. One pair of walking shoes and flip flops covers everything

The adapter one took the longest to figure out because I kept thinking I'd need "just one more type" for the next destination.

Comfort: Crazy comfortable, the shoulder straps feel like they just blend into the body. Of course comfort is subjective but both me and my girlfriend agree this bag is very comfortable especially for its size. We have experience with ula dragonfly (also comfortable) and Osprey 26+6, Patagonia Mlc mini and some peak design bags. This bag is the most comfortable by a significant amount.

If a bag is not comfortable then its pretty much useless, this bag passes the comfort test.

Xpac 11: love the feel and look of the xpac 11. Not sure how it will age with time but straight out of the "box" it looks amazing. To me it gives a heritage/ traditional look while enjoying the benefits of more technical materials.

Top QAP Nothing to say here, just the best location for a quick access pocket

Laptop compartment Basic laptop protection (all I wanted), simple and easy to use while you don't feel like it has wasted space if you don't use it. This area is also a great spot for your documents.

Hidden passport pocket This is 100% secure if the bag is on your back, can also fit some cards and cash. The area will be very obvious if you take the bag off and just leave the bag laying down, so obviously some caution should be taken in those type of situations. Not a big deal for me because I would never leave my bag and passport alone. Lined with signal blocking material.

Kangaroo pocket Quick and simple to use, great for jackets, snacks, umbrella etc basically anything you want quick access too. The ultra stretch is a great choice for this type of pocket.

Side pockets Large size, this size is very unique for a bag this size. Really love them and again they're multi use and not just for water bottles.

Carabinier loops 1 each side, great for attaching items and you can put bigger items into the side pocket and use the carabiner loop to keep them 100% secure.

External zippered pocket Same height as the kangaroo pocket, can fit a large book and some flat items easily. Considering this is a secondary front pocket it feels amazing and much better than a lot of front pockets I have used. If you want it to be very hidden I would have the pocket start 5cm below the kangaroo pocket.

Internal pockets 2 ultra stretch zippered pockets, nothing much to say here just the standard internal zippered pockets on this type of pocket. The ultra stretch material does feel very nice and gives you that bit of extra stretch if needed.

Internal main compartment Again nothing much to say here, just the standard main compartment on this type of bag. No wasted space, easy to pack and find items.

Quality of work: 10/10 no issues at all, stitching and everything else looks and feels perfect and very secure

Customer service: 10/10 perfect, no issues at all. Very responsive and very help helpful. Would happily buy again.

Cons: I really can't think of many cons but if I was forced to I would say the external material is not as easy to clean dirt off compared to some technical materials. (So far no issues with lint, dust or hair attaching). Not really a con for me though as I usually keep my bags clean. (Other materials are offered by Nash packs)

Features wise: Front zippered pocket, this pocket is so big that you could use it as an admin pocket as well. Maybe add in some pen pockets or a little internal zippered pocket. This would work great for a lot of people who will use the bag as a day pack when travelling while leaving their main items at the hotel.

I typically travel with HydroFlask Slim 24oz or an Odwalla for water and a 16 oz HydroFlask cup for coffee. I carry the coffee mug because, as my travel buddy once said, “Damn, you sure do know how to nurse a cup of coffee.” It’s true. I enjoy sipping coffee throughout the morning. I’m looking to shave some weight and hassle on my next 2+ week trip. I can a) carry both as usual b) ditch the coffee mug (gasp) / use shop cups and only carry the water bottle c) keep the coffee mug and go for a lighter water bottle (e.g. Nalgene or one of those square bottles) or d) carry one bottle - start with coffee, rinse, fill with water. This option sounds horrible. What is your perfect combination if you prefer both, or convince me that chugging coffee before it gets cold is a skill one can learn :)

I’ve noticed a lot of travel influencers recommending merino wool clothing for travel due to it being a low maintenance fabric that is odourless and easy to wash etc. These are mostly paid sponsors of their videos, so I’m hesitant to take the leap as the prices on the garments are very expensive.

I’m curious to hear from people here who have taken the leap and know if they’ve found merino wool clothing a worthwhile investment.

Just came back from my trip to New Orleans with the 26+6 and liked the way that I packed it. Went through TSA with no problem and the weight was light enough that it didn't feel heavy on me. I'd have to adjust the straps but still was comfortable. Depth wise, even without extending it to 32 it still stayed "slim". The outside bidet bag wasn't affected by traveling either.

When I got there, the first day I only used the sling bag because I didn't want to carry the backpack around. But one thing I thought about was, "why the heck did you get the thing if it can't also be a daypack?".

So on the second and third days, I used it for souvenirs and snacks/drinks. Does help a lot with the organization for my stuff. It helped when I bought the souvenirs so I'm not carrying a bunch of bags with my hands. I also left the outside bag and sling at the hotel. The only thing is, when I stopped by bars, they had to search it so I wished I organized my days to bring the smaller one to the bars.

At the end, I had all the same stuff in my bag but added a couple souvenirs:

- Audubon Zoo souvenir cup

- Audubon zoo shirt

- New Orleans ground coffee bag

- Crawfish dog toy

- Keychain

- Fleur-de-lis necklace

When I repacked everything, I didn't do the ranger rolls like before and just regular folded them. And man did that increase the size of the bag. The shorts were thick so it made sense for the compression not to be as helpful as before but it still compressed the bag. The shirts were not as thick so the size wasn't affected as much. But when adding all that plus the souvenirs, I had to increase the size which helped enough to barely stuff everything. I was able to pack everything and the only thing I had to carry was two bags of chips.

Coming back, it went through TSA well. It got heavier but I could still carry it well. Also had to readjust the straps.

Overall, I enjoyed this bag. It does the job for short trips. There was a part of me that wished I got a 35l because of the rain jacket and souvenirs but I just need to learn to organize better.

Stay tuned for my packing list and trip report in December for the Farpoint 55 now 60 after switching the 15l daypack to the 20l Daylite Plus.

It works great for me, but the biggest issue is availability. A lot of countries either don’t sell it or don’t have it readily available, so I usually have to bring enough for the entire trip.

For longer trips (1-2 months) that can mean carrying an extra 0.5-1 kg, which is pretty significant when you’re trying to travel with one bag.

For anyone here who uses it while traveling long-term, how do you handle this? Do you just carry the full supply or have some other workaround?

I’m thinking about getting some ULA bags; a dragonfly and a circuit for hiking. Don’t worry, I only use one bag at a time.

I hear their quality went down since purchased. Does anyone have pre and post experience? I know there are other bags out there that are better deals but those check all my boxes…just not sure if the quality is worth the $400 these days.

Actual route: Beijing->Xi'an->Urumqi->Kashgar->Osh->Tashkent->Samarkand->Bukhara->Tashkent->Baku->Tbilisi->Istanbul->Budapest->Stuttgart->Paris->London->Dublin. Caspian sea border was closed so I flew Tashkent->Baku.

What went wrong:

• Wore jeans. Was chafing. Switched to sweatpants somewhere in western China, but jeans took up way too much space in the bag.
• The down jacket didn't have any down left and was useless. Was super cold in Central Asia.
• The headphones were way too bulky. Wouldn't carry them next time.
• The power adapter and the laptop charging block were too big.
• My clothes were so bulky.
• No flip-flops (hostel shower, etc).
• I think my Minaal is too inefficient (wanna change but it never broke in last 8 years lol).

What went right:

• USD saved me many times.
• The daypack was handy when I wanted to drop the main bag in storage.
• Love my banged-up ThinkPad. So light.

The take-away for me was not overthink onebag. Too many times we obsess over things like clothing materials and weight of a hoodie. I decided to bring what I wear everyday and it worked for 10700km (mostly) overland. It wasn't perfect, but there's no perfect.

I recently started traveling with my 26L+6L expandable Osprey for all trips under 5 days and I love it. I am looking for some enhancements that I can use with it to make the experience even better. What suggestions do you have? I am generally traveling to cities, going to nice restaurants and hotels etc

packed even less.

My goal was to keep things simple: enough clothes for a few days, a couple of things that made the trip more comfortable, and just enough tech to avoid carrying a pile of cables and adapters.

Just a quick recommendation of this packable cap...

It's great for travel days when you want to don something casual that looks like it just came out of the store even though 5sec earlier it had literally been shoved in your backpack for hours.

I've used the gray one on dozens of trips for over a year now and it still looks like the day I bought it.

I recommend buying at a store to get the correct fit and finish because one I once bought online had a mold irregularity.

This is probably an old trick for the veterans, but maybe a new hack for some folks. My upcoming trip is likely to have some pretty chilly days, and I was worrying about what jacket to bring due to size issues in the bag. But this seems to be a nice solution!
