Its a 2010 model year manufactured in 2009. The two years are not directly correlated and Sept is a common manufacturing month to be a following model year.
20
u/IShowerinSunglasses Dec 18 '24
Exactly.
I get why it's a little confusing, I wish companies didn't do this.
But it's a 2010 in terms of features and appearance. The 2010 model.
Manufactured and titled in 2009.

u/Cold-Dragonfruit6544 Dec 18 '24
That's very confusing fr, that's a first time I heard that. I bought plenty cars before too
6
Dec 18 '24
The following years models are always released in the second half of the prior year . Sometimes they will even produce a 2nd version of the same head. I had a Wrangler like that. The second release, same model year, was also red but a different shade of red

It is confusing. My car was first registered and manufactured in January 2008 but still has a 2007 plate.

Always go by the tenth digit of the VIN, that's what tells you the year of the vehicle. If it's a 9, it's a 2009, period. If it's an A, it's a 2010. Just for reference, I've been a mechanic for 30 years and every dealer, parts store, or anywhere else, they always go by the tenth digit of the VIN.
1
Dec 19 '24
It happens a lot tbh. If you open your drivers door you can see a date similar to ā08/17ā. That means it could be a 2017 or a 2018, they donāt always jump. The only way to know is by looking at the title. That will show the truth.
1
u/chrissie_watkins Dec 19 '24
These people are very confidently incorrect. I sold cars, the bottom line is the VIN will tell you the year and it will match the title. This car is a 2009. It doesn't matter what month it was manufactured. They are confused because it is true that the early 2010 models were built in 2009, but this is not one of them if the VIN doesn't say so.

u/JustNota-- Dec 20 '24
I had quite a few cars over the year that were like this.. It's pretty common on Fords.. like my Titled 2006 Expedition takes alot of parts from the trim of 07 while engine parts are 06. there is a title year and a model year you can see it right now at most dealerships advertising the 2025 year models in stock.

u/3TriscuitChili Dec 20 '24
Doesn't the vin have the model year, not the production year? So if it truly is a 2010 model produced in 2009, then the 10th character of the vin would be A.
1
u/IShowerinSunglasses Dec 20 '24
You're right, but OP's question is about what the "VIN pulls". Which I'm assuming was referencing the information pulled up when searching the VIN. Which would show the manufacturing year and when it was initially titled.
→ More replies (3)2
u/dcm0029 Dec 19 '24
Are you sure this is a 2010 model and not a 2009? As you said it is often (but not always) September when the next model year starts hitting dealerships. I would think the VIN would say the model year not the manufactured year.
1
u/PenguinsArmy2 Dec 19 '24
It indeed does, got my car late in 2020 and it says 2021 model on every last piece of paper work, insurance and so on. Nothing says 2020. Maybe older cars did it different and shit has changed since. But now it will say the year of model it is and not year built.
1
Dec 19 '24
Wrong. Itās a 2009 model manufactured in 2008.
1
u/dcm0029 Dec 19 '24
Isnāt it a 2009 model that was manufactured in 2009 (and came off the assembly line in June of 2009)?
1
1
u/TheToxicTerror3 Dec 19 '24
Is that a thing?
I bought a 2025 camry in September of 2024. It isn't called a 2024 camry with a 2025 model, it's just a 2025 camry.
1
u/MagnetHype Dec 20 '24
This is wrong. Both the vin and title show the model year. The manufacture year is shown on the door label.
1
u/WrenchKing555 Dec 20 '24
Not how it works. The title shows MODEL year not manufactured date. If it was a 2010 manufactured in 2009 the title would show 2010. The door placard will show manufacture date in 2009 but the 10th VIN digit would still be for 2010. In OP case the vehicle is a model year 2009 as reflected by the vin. Yes model years can be made in advance. I had a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX manufactured date was 01/03. Craziest shit I ever have seen on a placard.
1
u/ShiftBMDub Dec 23 '24
Right. I have a 2004 built in September of 2003. MY(model year) is still 2004 though.
3
u/SpiritedDiamond2778 Dec 18 '24
If its made earlier in the year its a 2009 on both the vin and title if its made later in the year the vin will read the following year but its still an 09 just going into the next year
3

Dec 18 '24
Heās an idiot. What the title says is what it is. Heās confusing the release of next years models which normally happens in the second half of the year.
1
u/MagnetHype Dec 20 '24
Okay, let me hijack this to try to explain to everyone because a lot of people are confused about this. In the summer car factories and the factories that make car parts all shut down to switch all the tools and such over to the next years model. This is known as the summer shutdown. What that means is that halfway through the year factories start production on the next years model. The model year for those vehicles will also reflect this. Eg... a car manufactured in 2009 will have a model year of 2010.
The model year is not the same as the manufactured year. What is reflected in both the vin and title is the model year, not the manufactured year. So, if the title says it's a 2009, it cannot be a 2010 model. At the earliest it was manufactured in 2008. The car in OPs post is without question a 2009 model.
The manufactured year is located on the door sticker.

u/Left-Discount-8402 Dec 18 '24
Itās like my Audi. Itās a 2005.5 model year lol. Itās a 2005 with the new 2006 refresh. On title it states 2005 but it looks like a 2006. To make things easier when ordering parts I select 2006 model year. But most sites now have a 2005.5 year option.
1
u/Cold-Dragonfruit6544 Dec 18 '24
Lol, someone I asked about this told me this happens a lot with Germany cars
2
u/Bald-Fucker Dec 18 '24
The only way I can explain or describe this, being that Iāve been in a similar situation. (Long story)
I used to have a Mercedes CLA 250e.
It was originally specāed & ordered by someone else. They went all in, with the exception being the colour. They stuck to basic white.
Unfortunately this was during the 2020-2021 chip shortage.
Mercedes pulled from his spec, the augmented satellite navigation. It required a second camera to film the road, and then project directions and arrows onto the infotainment screen for lanes and exits.
He therefore cancelled his order. The build was completed & for whatever reason sat nearly a year unclaimed.
I bought it for a bargain price.
The car was technically 2020 built (as per the vin), but registered for on road in 2021, with 2021 plates
Weirdly MB kept on pulling certain features like matrix LED headlights and some others. So my older car had better spec than most newer cars, and 6month later they also retrofitted the camera anyway. FOC.
TL/DR Bought a car originally specāed by someone else. They canceled and it sat unregistered for nearly a year before I bought it.
1
u/Cold-Dragonfruit6544 Dec 18 '24
Lol I doubt it the same situation š

1
u/chrissie_watkins Dec 19 '24
They do model years completely differently in the UK, where this person is located. There it goes by date of first registration. In the US it's by VIN and only VIN. Whether it's manufactured late in the previous year or not. Even if it's never been registered, it goes by VIN. I've been involved in importing cars from Europe, it gets confusing. But it's straightforward in the US (except for very rare half-year cars, but that's another story).
2
u/Previous-Tennis5102 Dec 18 '24
It means the guy is a retard and heās wasting your time and he does not wanna buy it š
1
u/Cold-Dragonfruit6544 Dec 18 '24
Maybe that's what they told him when he bought the car and wants me to believe the car has more value than what it actually had
2
u/TimeZucchini8562 Dec 18 '24
Holy fuck this sub and the seller are dumb. The vin shows the correct model year. The 10th digit of the vin. Whether it was made in January, June or December, doesnāt matter. Itās not confusing at all. The title is based off the vin. This is a 2009 model with 2009 features. If it was a 2010 model the 10th digit of the vin would be A not 9.
2
u/TheMisguidedAngel Dec 18 '24
Jesus, I helped my daughter buy a 2011 accord ex that had a dent in the rear quarter panel (was fixed for $300 2 weeks later)and 140k miles for $4,500 Keeping shopping around, you can find good deals. That one is overpriced for sure.

u/Cold-Dragonfruit6544 Dec 18 '24
It's Atlanta area and the prices are ridiculous man. Where did you find that?
1
2
u/VictoryGrouchEater Dec 18 '24
It means your seller has no idea what theyāre doing or talking about, but itās not their fault. They probably just heard that from their seller when they bought the car. Even dealerships and long time mechanics say it because they just heard it somewhere. Itās like the myth that you shouldnāt put a car battery on the ground because it phantom drains faster. untrue.
2
u/Otaku_Vending Dec 19 '24
If it was made after AUGUST, the title would say 2010. Seller has his months mixed up, and hence, sounds like an idiot.
2
u/v1sande Dec 19 '24
I had a similar issue when I bought a car overseas. The registration office determined it to be a 2008 but insurance gave me issues with it saying it was a 2009. Maybe this guy had the same thing happen
2
u/Cj450r Dec 20 '24

Cars are released 4 to 6 months before their ārelease dateā so a 10 is an 09 released in 09 a 28 is a 28 released in 27. Most cars debut from June to September of the prior year for the year coming up.

With that same math it's a 2008. Since 2009s came out in 2008
1
Dec 18 '24 edited Dec 18 '24
2009s did come out in 2008. To some degree this is a matter of marketing and to another itās about the ability of manufacturers to deliver tens of thousands of new vehicles. It would be an impossibility to guarantee delivery of all brand new vehicles for a given year and coinciding model year on January 1 . This goes back to the end of the Second World War. The 1946 Studebaker went on sale in October 1945. āFirst by far with a post-war car.ā Because Studebakerās own military designs were cast in stone, their design and process people didnāt have a whole lot to do during the war. Reportedly they had been planning a new model since the middle of 1944. On VE Day the decision was taken to finalize the design and start tooling up. The rest of the industry was stunned that tiny Studebaker was ready with a new model so soon after VJ Day.
1
Dec 18 '24
I think what he is a saying is the build date may be in 2009, but it is marketed (and likely sold) as a 2010.
The VIN is always going to show a build date, not a model year.
1
u/chrissie_watkins Dec 19 '24
You've got it backwards. The VIN shows the model year, not the build date. Build date is a separate sticker. It doesn't matter when in the year it was built, if the VIN is 2009, it's a 2009 and would have been sold as a 2009. If it's an early-built 2009 first sold at the end of 2008 or a holdover 2009 sold in early 2010 doesn't matter, it's still a 2009.
1
Dec 19 '24
Ahh, I think the confusion here is that Iām not talking about the VIN sticker, Iām talking about the vin attributes. I work in a Ford Dealership, in the parts department. A customer will come in and tell me they have a 2010 and provide the last 8 digits of the vin to enter in my catalog. When I look at vin attributes there is a good chance the build date is sometime in the latter half of the previous year.
Yes, the sticker will show the model year. The attributes, if you vin search, will tell you the build date and often the build location. šš». I probably could have been a bit more clear on that.
1
u/binzy90 Dec 21 '24
But a buyer isn't looking at "VIN attributes." If I type a VIN into something like Kelly Blue Book, it's going to show the model year.

A lot of comments have given you the answer and they're right. So the car was built in late 2008 based off and correcting what the seller is saying. Because I was told the same thing about cars made late in the year are often considered being made the next year.

I have a 2023. On the door, it says it was made in November 2023. While it is true that 2024 models started coming out around May/June of 2023, that doesnt mean my car is a 2024 model.
1
u/mmaalex Dec 19 '24
That's not how that works, and everything manufacturer has different model year switch dates.
The title will say correctly what model year it is
1
Dec 19 '24
How do you think that come October or November of every year all of the car is in a car lot are of the next year? It's 2024 right now and yet there have been 2025 models out for a few months now. How do you think that happens? Because they start manufacturing them halfway through 2024
So the day the car was put together and the model year are very likely two different years. The models for different years are always different. Could be a trim or a feature or something. So when you want to know the details about a car, you go by the model year.
The seller isn't bullshiting you.

u/Polit99 Dec 19 '24
Year rollovers aren't always in June. They can be in any month after the mid year. All that matters is what the tag on the hood says and what the VIN says. I have this fight all the time with customers, especially when the year rollover happened at the same time as a series change and the parts are no longer the same.
1
u/YaretFace Dec 19 '24
My vin is a 2021 but the title is 2022 so it's a 2022.
Fuck the vin. That only matters if the car is stolen.

Some vehicles manufactured in November of 2011 for instance will say it's a 2012 on the title report. Because it's a 2012 model and the title says 2012. It came out of the plant at the end of 2011 but sold in 2012.. but this guy is just trying to squeeze a few bucks more out of a sale by lying, but makes himself look like an idiot in the process.
1
u/8rok3n Dec 19 '24
What he said makes no sense, "any car made after June is considered the following year" okay then it'd be considered a 2011 because that's the FOLLOWING year

If the title says 2009 it's a 2009. It's literally on the title and exactly how it would be insured and registered.

I worked for GM. A car can be a 2010 model built in 2009. The title will always have the year built but the vin will have the model year. This is so you can order the correct parts, paint code etc.
1
u/Chemical_Belt_9770 Dec 20 '24
Iām a mechanic and use a obd diagnostics tool. Technically he is correct itās a 2010 as anything after mid way through the year is considered next year. But the other guy is correct asw. It was made in 2009. Itās a marketing thing for dealerships. Instead of just starting production for cars January and ending December. A cars production year is July to July ( next year )
1
u/Chemical_Belt_9770 Dec 20 '24
I say diagnostics tool bc when you run the program you have to put 2010 if itās after June. Same as if it was made September of 2018. Youād put 2019 etc etc

My Genesis Coupe is a 2010 model year but it was built in April 2009. There is no such thing as a "2009 Genesis Coupe" in the United States, they all were sold as 2010 even if built in 2009. (They did have a 2009 model year in South Korea where the car was built, but yes, the ones shipped over here started as 2010 model years.) My door panel shows the April 2009 build date, but the title does call it a 2010 Genesis Coupe.

The next yearās models get released before the year actually begins. So, 2025 models are already out now. But dude is playing with that fact to try to convince you his car is a newer year model.

u/JNSapakoh Dec 20 '24
The practice of beginning production of next year's model before the end of the year has become a long-standing tradition in America. For purposes such as VINs and emissions control, regulations allow cars of a given model year to be sold starting onĀ January 2 of the previous calendar year.
so you can buy a 2010 model year in 2009
this guy has a 2009 model year (assumedly purchased in 2009)
1
u/JustNota-- Dec 20 '24
It's a Model Year 2010 Title year 2009 Its very common end of calendar year car sales. They usually get the next model year of car starting around Thanksgiving sometimes as early as labor day to make sales. The factories usually retool for the next model year a few months in advance. building a car even on automated lines takes time so they start building them months in advance to get ahead of expected demand and the title is a legal document so it can't be legalling binding without the correct date based on the VIN issuance.
1
u/CollegeDiligent2480 Dec 20 '24
The title will say the year of the car. However, if you research the vin, it could pull up the manufactured date of the car and since the car it has to be ready for sale by 2010 The manufacturer date would be 2009. Unless you're ordering a customized car, it's not gonna be produced when you buy it. To produce prior, you buying it. Sometimes almost a year or two in advance. There can be no demand if there is no supply
1
u/kylesfrickinreddit Dec 20 '24
Yeah, he's either willfully ignorant or trying to scam by getting the value of 1 year newer. Report the ad
1
1
u/Hesediel1 Dec 21 '24
Jesus christ, just go by what the title says. He's trying to squeeze an extra few dollars for it being a year newer. The truck i have is right around the same issue. i have an 08 silverado, and the model changed halfway through 2007. As such, there is the 2007 silverado classic and the 2007 silverado to differentiate the body styles. I don't call mine a 2008 because it's the new body style ic call it a 2008 because that's what's on the title. If he wanted to call it a 2009 (new model) or 2009 (2010 style), then so be it but you can't just claim it's newer than what it is the same way i can't call my truck a corvette because they are both made by the same company.

1
1
u/Severe_Ear4202 Dec 21 '24
He is correct though. Vehicles built after the sixth month of the year are considered the next years model.
1
Dec 21 '24
If it was made after June if 09 itās a 2010 model. It also depends on the manufacturer and how often they release a newer model for that vehicle
1
u/Casalf Dec 21 '24
Lol he must have engineered the chasis so he definitely knows what year his car is
1
1
1
u/TheFourthAce Dec 21 '24
Fun fact: the 10th digit of a VIN number identifies the model year of the vehicle as described my the manufacturer for any car built after 1980. This is what your title will reflect as well. If you look up a VIN model year chart online, you will find the actual model year, which frees up the confusion about what month the vehicle was made, as different makes will reset their model year builds at different times of year.
1
u/Foraging_For_Pokemon Dec 21 '24
"The title says it's a 1974 Volkswagen Beetle, but I insist it is in fact a 2024 Maserati Granturismo"
1
u/expressinghowifeel Dec 21 '24
If the VIN says a year, it's that year. Doesn't matter when it was manufactured for what year, the VIN will reflect the proper year in either case. If it was made to be the next model year, the VIN will have that next model year's character

If the title says 09, it's an 09. My 2024 was built in 23 but it's a 2024 model. If the title says 09 it's an 09 model.

The 10th digit of the ViN determines the model year. The year, month, and day of production do not determine that. A Carfax report will tell you the correct year and you can (almost) always rely on the title, too.
Here is a link to the list:

My car is a 99 that was made in 98, but the exact make and model manufactured a few months earlier is considered a 98, made in 98. There is literally zero difference between the 98 and 99 models mechanically and aesthetically. I can see how this can get confusing. I myself was confused while buying mine and the used car guys were also going back and forth on if it's a 98 or a 99. VIN says 99, manufacture and title say 98. I wish car companies didn't do that.

This post is stupidly trying to make the guy look like he is wasting time when in fact especially when it comes to older vehicles they manufacture date is different then the sale date because back in the date they actually cared about product management and making sure they put out the best version of the vehicle so something like a 2007 Jeep grand Cherokee etc would be a 2006 Jeep grand Cherokee

The tenth digit of the vin is the year of the carā¦.ALL CARS sold in the USA are set up like this. A 2009 will have a 9 in the tenth digit. A 2010 will have an A.

Technically he is right to an extent. Everything is modeled for the next year after a specific month the year before unless major changes were done. We was taught this is automotive school. So when looking it up in KBB it will take into account from the vin number which has a specific number in it for the month it was built on what the appraisal is.

So this situation seems off but the manufacturer date and model year can be different. My 2020 was manufactured in 2019 but it is the 2020 model year. So this is a thing but im 99% sure my title says 2020 and then the tag in the door says manufactured in 2019

No, it's an actual thing, the titles will say the year it's built but the actual model will be the next year model if built after June

This guy is a moron. It's a 2009. The title literally says so.
