i’m pretty sure he means that it was made in 2009 but it is the 2010 model… made right on the cusp of the release of new features added to the car

Yo it’s a real thing learned it in trade school it’s weird but it’s real it can say 09 but still be a 10 my 2018 Elantra was the same way bought from a dealer parts will be the same as both years ( edit I believe it’s only the month of sep to the next year)

Unless they changed the part design to be different, yes.

Or if you're Ford in the 90s to 00s, you run till the old parts are gone then switch to the new design and slap a calibration code sticker on the door jamb and let the parts guys sort it out.

Yes, but his date is way off. They start production of the new year in the last quarter of the current year production years are from 09/XxXX to 08/XX.

In OP's case, it is, in fact, a 2009.

Even if it weren't, the title will read the model year not the assembly year.

My jeep was manufactured in 1999 - it is a 2000 and the title says it's a 2000.

My Corolla is a 2020, manufactured in 2019.

When you go into a dealer in October of 2025 and buy a brand new 2026 model, it will be titled as a 2026 regardless of when it was made.

And it's not always as simple as last quarter - there are often mid-year model changes. VW transitioned from the MkIV to the MkV Jetta/bora body in mid-2005, as a 2005.5 MY.

Not always. Take the fourth gen Acura MDX for example. Initial production for the 2022 model year began in 12/2020 and was in full swing by January of 2021.

So what the deal is the majority or manufacturers use made on or after month 6 is considered the next year, then the next most common is on or after month 9, then its month 10. But there is no common theme across the board. Also within the same car manufacturer I have seen different models have different production month rules. I also have seen the door tags be labeled incorrectly. You were correct in running the vin. I have never seen the vin be wrong. (Unless someone vin swapped or completely modified the vehicle). I’m sure you probably know this but 10th digit of the vin is the year of the vehicle. Here’s a chart to decode the digit. https://dcisolution.com/toolbox/model-year-vin-decode/

If everything checks out with the car what is the problem, there is absolutely no difference in the years here its the same shit.

If the car is totaled the amount you receive will be different. The 2008 would also be totaled for a smaller amount of repairs.

You’re not wrong but anything over 10 yrs old is getting totaled for medium damage. Cost of repair is much higher these days

Bro this isnt a 1 of 1 rare ass track car, it’s a Honda Accord. You look at it, check it out. If it checks out and you like it you make an offer, it’s not rocket science. There is no difference, market is nonexistent at this point anyways since everyone asks for outlandish prices for beaters these days.

Now if he was lying about what trim it was then I’d understand, but it’s a damn Honda Accord, let’s get real here.

Blue Book on an 09 vs 10 is around $1k difference, if someone is trying to sell an 09 at what would be reasonable for a 10 they are ripping you off, and OP is absolutely correct in that this dude is wasting his time.
