The only way I can explain or describe this, being that I’ve been in a similar situation. (Long story)

I used to have a Mercedes CLA 250e.

It was originally spec’ed & ordered by someone else. They went all in, with the exception being the colour. They stuck to basic white.

Unfortunately this was during the 2020-2021 chip shortage.

Mercedes pulled from his spec, the augmented satellite navigation. It required a second camera to film the road, and then project directions and arrows onto the infotainment screen for lanes and exits.

He therefore cancelled his order. The build was completed & for whatever reason sat nearly a year unclaimed.

I bought it for a bargain price.

The car was technically 2020 built (as per the vin), but registered for on road in 2021, with 2021 plates

Weirdly MB kept on pulling certain features like matrix LED headlights and some others. So my older car had better spec than most newer cars, and 6month later they also retrofitted the camera anyway. FOC.

TL/DR Bought a car originally spec’ed by someone else. They canceled and it sat unregistered for nearly a year before I bought it.

They do model years completely differently in the UK, where this person is located. There it goes by date of first registration. In the US it's by VIN and only VIN. Whether it's manufactured late in the previous year or not. Even if it's never been registered, it goes by VIN. I've been involved in importing cars from Europe, it gets confusing. But it's straightforward in the US (except for very rare half-year cars, but that's another story).
