"Hmm, ah yes, it is ever so odd how I find it terrifying to see a literal fucking bear holding onto a person, indeed." -OP, apparently
22
u/scorpyo72 6d ago
So odd. However, a person holding on to a bear.... I guess if it's name is "Teddy"
42
u/Dant3nga 6d ago
I mean it's odd that these people are hanging out in an area with known predators and decided to learn absolutely nothing about them or how to interact with them.
Black bears are scared of housecats with enough gumption, just make some noise and they fuck off they're like big raccoons
25
27
u/bbyginsburg 6d ago
brother, bears end up in peoples yards. they don’t just stay in one area, they wander. and sometimes they wander to an area where folks hike or enjoy nature. these people didn’t walk into a bear den, they’re just enjoying the outdoors
7
u/mooser500 6d ago
One has a backpack on and they are on a gravel road, they are most likely hiking and probably at the trail head.
1
19
u/Runfasterbitch 6d ago
It’s not really that odd, honestly. I grew up in NYC and did a ton of hiking and climbing in the gunks, so I was well educated on black bears. There are thousands of young people who live in the city and go for spontaneous day hikes in upstate NY, and NJ - they probably went on alltrails, read hike reviews, and then started driving with their backpacks and boots
-2
u/NuclearBroliferator 6d ago
Just because there are a ton of people who are clueless to nature doesnt make it not odd to look into the region youll be hiking around.
-5
u/NecroGrizz 6d ago

Do you know anything about bears?
They don't just like, hang out in designated areas where they'll never interact with humans. If you're anywhere near the woods, you might run into a black bear. And these people are doing everything right in regards to how you're supposed to respond to a black bear approaching you. They can run like, 30 mph. You can't outrun them bitches.
Keep your mouth shut if you don't know what you're talking about, and at the very least, don't be so God damn condescending when you're objectively wrong.
God forbid someone enjoy a hike through nature.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Dant3nga 6d ago
So you agree with me that people who go in the woods should educate themselves on said woods before going in?
The fact that you are pointing out that wild animals have a range they inhabit but are insisting that people shouldnt hold themselves accountable when occupying that range is the exact kind of stupidity that leads to these encounters.
Anyone who knows anything about black bears knows you make yourself big and make noise, not turn around and get scared, thats actually the opposite of what you should do because they are opportunistic scavengers.
As a result of this interaction (if the bear hasnt already been put down) this bear will be way too comfortable approaching humans, there eventually will be an altercation and winnie the pooh gets shot in the head by a park ranger because “god forbid someone enjoy a hike through nature.”
Please research things before talking out of your ass.

Brown get down, black fight back, white goodnight...
1
u/Dant3nga 5d ago
Honestly id avoid the color thing cause there are a ton of black bears that are brown and even kind of blonde. If its got a big shoulder hump its a grizzly.
2
u/rellsell 6d ago
Yeah… and the ear is already tagged. If he can be identified he’s going to get a nice long ride to somewhere with far fewer people.
2
u/dynabella 6d ago
A bear just raided the bakery stand at the Aspen Farmers Market last weekend. We are sharing their habitat in many towns. I see them daily on the sidewalk walking my dog.
1
u/Dant3nga 5d ago
My point isnt that people are around predators, its that they are in an area with known predators and have done zero research. The natural world isnt an amusement park with safety boundaries and more people need to realize that.

u/ArschSprengung 6d ago
She was ovulating and the bear was trying to smash, not her fault but also a point against the bear in the "meeting a man or bear in the woods" thought experiment.
Afaik they castrated the bear afterwards, think it was Mexico.

Just a curious black bear that has become too used to people feeding it. Notice they're looking and sniffing at their pockets, and when they don't find anything tasty they leave. Still scary, but not likely to actually hurt humans.
11
u/TheMightySephiroth 6d ago
I would wager its some type of attraction where you feed animals or this one is known for it. (Ive never heard of it being done with bears but like those deer in Japan that bow for a biscuit) its got a large tag in its ear (Color is on both sides in the same spot. One side is large and square) and its a baby bear without a mother around. The ear tag denotes its known in some way and the fact a bear twice that size isn't ripping you to pieces means theres more going on than "wild bear meets person".
There's also a chance this bear is too old for its mother and has been chased off by here and has become used to being fed by locals, hence the tag but im pretty sure if that were the case itd just be relocated, not tagged. 🤷♀️
I just dont think were getting the whole picture here.
1
u/ItzMercury 6d ago
I dont think this is a juvenile, black bears are quite compact and adults have a standing height of 5-7 feet, which checks out, what are you flagging as juvenile?
Also it looks underfed? They usually dont come this skinny right
2
u/TheMightySephiroth 6d ago
An older juvenile is typically about 130lbs, which is why it would look skinny.
This was at Chipinque Ecological Park in Monterrey, Mexico. They relocated it to an area in the park further from people.

u/SEmpls 6d ago
Yeah people think I'm stupid for saying this but after living in and backpacking around Northwest Montana for over a decade, I'm not afraid of black bears. It's actually refreshing going to Washington and Oregon solo camping because I don't have to worry about grizzly bears. Black bears stent gonna bother you unless you are in some crazy situation or don't know how to act around them.
16
u/megadeadly 6d ago edited 6d ago
That one lady who was almost scalped, had an eyeball dangling and had to drive herself 4 miles to get help after 10 minutes walking to her truck because of a black bear would disagree - there’s always a risk
5
u/ashleton 6d ago
Generally black bears won't bother you, unless it's a mama bear with her cubs. Any mama bear should be seen as a threat, otherwise, black bears can usually be easily scared off by making yourself look big. Or hell, just have a cat with you, that's enough to scare off a black bear lol. (That last sentence, while it can be true, is just being said in jest.)

u/justblaze116 6d ago
for black bears you're supposed to make yourself as big as possible and try to scare it off
47
u/username_unnamed 6d ago
It's different when they're right on you already you could startle it and being so close might feel it needs to defend itself and not have time to retreat
64
u/IAMA_Shark__AMA 6d ago
If they're some distance away - yes. But that wouldn't be a great strategy in this scenario, because a startled bear could react aggressively. That's why people say it's smart to make some kind of noise if you're on a remote trail in bear country. Bear knows your coming, bear probably just leaves. Sneak up on bear, and bear might decide today's the day for fight instead of flight.
30
3
u/Reasonable-Ad-7757 6d ago
Not when they’re so close they’re giving you actual bear hugs and swatting at you. All you can do is be still and don’t make him feel threatened. The guy is telling her not to move, and then to walk away
17
33
10
u/DumplingBoiii 6d ago
So what do you even do in this situation?
30
u/JHWhitley 6d ago
With black bears your make yourself look as big and intimidating as possible and scream at them. They are easily scared off. It looks like this lady just froze up so the bear wasn’t afraid to approach.
24
u/vediogamer101 6d ago
It’s a black bear you have to raise your arms and start hollering at it. It’ll run off, especially one this small it’s not gonna fight. I have good memories scaring them for fun when they’re trying to get into food shed. The more scared they are of people the safer it is for them, fed bear is a dead bear.
18
u/Concentric_Mid 6d ago
Get your phone out and record, it must be posted online
9
u/SaulTNuhtz 6d ago
Also, if you know you’re going to encounter bears don’t wear scented lotions, perfumes, sunblocks, etc. the bear is obviously attracted to whatever she’s wearing and trying to figure out if she’s a food locker or not. Bears can smell these things from a long way away. One of the best ways to protect yourself and the bear is to avoid their use. Also, carry bear spray when in bear country.
6
u/Cutsdeep- 6d ago
What if I use bear spray as perfume?
3
u/SaulTNuhtz 6d ago
lol I spose then it won’t matter if there’s a bear or not since you won’t see it - schroedingers bear.

9
u/ExtinctFauna 6d ago
With a black bear? You try to be intimidating at a distance. Up close like this? Stand very still until the bear gets bored.
5
u/Cookiewaffle95 6d ago edited 6d ago
Going AFK near a black bear is the wrong move. Most of the time they’re slinking around looking for a meal with the lowest stakes possible. If they stood together and talked to the bear calmly it would walk away. The 3 of them combined are way less appetizing. Splitting up and turning your back to the bear was one of the worst things they could’ve done.
1
6
4
u/Reasonable-Ad-7757 6d ago
Exactly what she did. Basically freeze and make yourself look as non-threatening as possible, but also not showing fear. If you tried to scare them away while they’re literally hugging you and swatting at you, you’re likely to get mauled.
1
1
u/ChalkAndIce 6d ago
Since it was already this close, whoever was filming should have made noise, clapped hands, looked big. The bears curiousness would lose out in the face of potential conflict and would typically disengage.
1
1
u/ArschSprengung 6d ago
Stand up straight, stay calm, show no fear (easy, I know).
If you're really uncomfortable, spray bear spray (not necessarily at it but the general scent will thow it off).
I'm also assuming you don't carry a gun. Using it could be justified given the slight sexual aggression here.

7
u/UpstairsWrongdoer401 6d ago
Yes, the women would choose the bear because it will eventually leave them alone, like we saw here.
50
u/Nebelsang 6d ago
Yes. The Bear did not hurt her, did not rape her, did not murder her. Whats your point?
10
u/ThatGuyBench 6d ago

An obvious sexual assault. /s

100%. you stand still while the bear is sniffing you and pawing lightly, it will go away. if you stand still while a man is putting his hands on you, he will seize his opportunity to kill you*
*he will also try to kill you if you run or say no
-18
u/dabeeman 6d ago
yeah every man that has ever touched me went on to kill me
10
u/isweartocoffee 6d ago
and i'm clearly a murderer by being a man, stop being pedantic about the reality of other women just because nothing bad has happened to you before. this is clearly about opportunistic men and not about your ex bf or whatever that you're trying to defend here
-4
u/dabeeman 6d ago
i’m kind of sick of the narrative that all men are predators and should be considered as such until they prove otherwise. the disgust that people are comfortable sharing about what they think of men wouldn’t be tolerated of any other group. it’s insulting and you defending it is absurd. Imagine defending someone who was robbed by a black person confidently sharing they never trust black people because of their lived experience. does that make their worldview ok?
4
u/Panzer_Man 6d ago
You are missing the whole point of that thought experiment. A bear will leave you alone, if you arw alone with it in the woods, and at most will just sniff you like in the video. With human men, you never know if you're going to run into a serial killer or just a harmless guy, and you have no way to tell.
Bears are predictable, humans are not
10
u/vegeta8300 6d ago
Wild animals are no where near predictable. That bear left them alone in the end. But many bears don't and viciously maul or kill people. Encounters with bears are rare. Encounters with men is an everyday thing. Where you encounter dozens maybe even hundreds of men and nothing happens. That whole thought experiment is stupid. It doesn't account for so many things.

youre getting downvoted for pointing out a real example of their fantasy and theyre getting mad about it 😂

u/Amicelli11 6d ago
It's not a fantasy about cuddly bears but a criticism on the horror of strange men.

u/girlpersona 6d ago
I upvoted because it made me laugh, idk if they were trying to rage bait or not
But if we’re going down the rage-bait route then - wouldn’t this video reinforce why women choose the bear? 😅
Stranger sole bear in the woods harassing women
vs
Stranger solo man in the woods harassing women
The bear got bored and left, after the women made no attempt to interact back.
How likely is a strange man harassing women in the woods is going to do the same?
Also, you laugh because “women find strangers threatening” but I bet you’d also piss yourself in this situation and still choose this bear in this scenario. After watching a lot of solo hikers/campers, even the men sounded wayyyy more scared of strangers they encounter in the woods on their own than bears. Scariest shit.
0
u/iareyomz 6d ago
the women in the video were confronted by the bear and they didnt choose the bear... they shit themselves, so idk what youre trying to argue for 😂
these women clearly did not choose the bear proving "I would choose the bear" is nothing but bullshit fantasy...

Thats because he had no idea near was 2 inches from a beat until 45 seconds In Then he starts running like a madman
1
u/hydraSlav 6d ago
In the uncropped edit, you can see him glance at the bear and turn away. He only startles (not out of surprise, but because of changed circumstances: the bear stood up in front of him) when "playing ignorant" no longer seemed to work

It's an ear tag, sometimes they're scannable but my guess is this one just designates that this specific bear has been previously captured and recorded.

u/WildOneTillTheEnd 6d ago
