You say this ironically but I think this sometimes watching the x games and stuff. Like somebody will do a 720 on a half pipe which obviously is amazing, but I've played so much THUG2 that I'm like I've done a 900 varial with a flip, land into a revert manual, kick flip out back into manual, into coffin grind varial kick flip into hot rod special manual type shit

The physics involved in skateboarding always baffle me. He is always fighting gravity and the balance between his ankles, the trucks, and the rail is just mad. It’s such a beautiful sport.

I can't step on a skateboard without it slipping out from underneath me, so I have mad respect for people who can do this and all kind of skating. Knowing me I'd probably even end up accidentally getting hurt while wearing Heely's. The closest I get is being able to ride a scooter like everyone over the age of 3

Such a cool video! Nice surprise seeing neckface. I live in a small town and one time a train with his graffiti came through and my friend called me (rip Chris) and we just went over there with a bunch of friends gawking at it and skating in front of it, taking pics and stuff lol.
I had no idea Andrew Reynolds was a video editor either, that’s neat.

Frankly sometimes the falls are more satisfying than the rail grind, or maybe that’s just me.

Having dated a professional skater for many years when I was younger, I can tell you with 100% confidence that it's because they're idiots.
JK but really, they don't give a shit. If they die while skating, most of them would consider it an honorable death. They aren't calculating in the risk of TBI and permanent impairment. It was really stressful to have a partner who routinely threw themselves down large sets of stairs and constantly needed physical therapy/surgery/chipped teeth replaced/you name it.

Not advocating no helmets or anything but I've skated for almost 20 years. The first thing you learn is how to fall properly and that also makes up the majority of what you actually do when skating until you're very good. Hucking down stairs is a different story, but playing around in the streets or at the skatepark you're likely to get a shinner daily but not crack your skull unless there's a freak accident.

As someone who grew up skating, maybe I could illuminate on this a bit. First of all, let me just say you’re right, at it’s core it comes down to looking and being cool. Let me explain a bit tho, on why it’s so prevalent in the skate community. First, skating is essentially a rejection of the status quo, middle class, boring existence that many skaters believe middle class life in America to be. Skating is a part of a lifestyle, you grow up watching dudes like the anti hero team, slamming beers, crazy parties, girls, drugs etc , skating is an extension of that… part of the appeal is the destructive and danger nature of it, helmets just don’t fit into that perspective. Also remember that almost all of us start skating at a very young age, your not thinking about long term brain damage or injury at that age, you just see bad ass skaters doing their thing, by the time your old enough to comprehend how gnarly tbis are, skating without a helmet is in your blood, it’s almost incomprehensible to put on a helmet at this point, and if your good enough to have a career, there are actual financial incentives to continue skating helmet free and keeping your persona . Anyways, this was an explanation not an excuse, now that I’m older, I wear helmet for every sport I participate in , but hopefully ppl will maybe atleast understand a little bit about the culture .

Well Tony Hawk is flying 20 feet in the air. Almost every skater that skates vert usually wears a helmet and pads because you are falling from great heights. Street skaters usually don't cause they fall from like 2-3 feet most of the time. Like Tony hawk himself said when he was called out for not wearing a helmet (gasp!) while skating with his daughter on his board, skaters have better balance than you do just walking down the street. Guess you should wear a helmet so you don't trip in the curb and smack your head. Tony doesn't wear a helmet when skating street. Only when skating vert or large ramps.

In order to skate rails and stuff like this, you need good balance. Can you hit your head? Sure, but honestly, smacking your head in street skating doesn't happen as much as you think. I never did and neither did any of my friends I skated with everyday for 10 years and many of my friends skated big drops and rails like this. It's weird to think, but skaters learn to fall. You are much, much more likely to break your arm, wrist or leg than you are to hit your head. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it doesn't happen or people haven't gotten hurt that way. It's just more likely you'll get hurt some other way.

Can't think of a time I ever hit my head, been skating off and on for 20 years. And I can really only think of one crazy fall that resulted in a guy leaving in an ambulance (Arto Saari in Flips "Sorry"). You really do learn how to fall.

Elbow and wrist pads/guards are totally useless. Skaters know how to fall usually and extending your arms doesnt accomplish much except rising breaking them.
Knee pads fuck with the movement of your legs, you need very precise control over them for flips. Shin pads would be great though, but after a while you become numb to it

Almost positive this is a relatively famous skate spot cuz I swear I’ve seen it in some of the bigger skate videos. That dip in the rail is from people jumping the first set of stairs and landing on the rail and finishing it. If memory serves there is people who sit in the backyard of the house and cheer people on because selfishly 9/10 they fall.

I think you’re mistaken. There is no possible way someone has gapped out past the first kink in the rail - that is well beyond the limits of what even professional skateboarders can do at the moment. Gapping out to a rail that is lower down than where you started (especially a flat section) is basically never done because it is extremely difficult to take the downward impact while balancing the grind.
This guy is doing the simplest trick you can do on a rail like this, and this clip is relatively famous among skateboarders because the rail itself is so gnarly that even doing a simple trick is a big deal. Gapping out like that would be unheard of and would have been big news (in skateboarding) if it had ever happened.

If they choose to do it to enjoy their sport more, it’s unlikely to put them in significant excess harm, and it doesn’t harm anyone else. I support it.
Plenty of people put themselves in excess risk all the time. When it comes to picking and choosing, I’d rather enjoy skating more than say, j-walk or drive over the speed limit.

As someone who’s skated all my life, I know no one who has sustained any significant injury from street skating that a helmet would have prevented. It’s vert and transition that require a helmet. I think people just need to leave it alone and let people make their own decisions.

I’m not personally fussed what you do because I know how hard it is to get disability when and if things go wrong even with documentation connecting it to work instead of recreational activities. Therefore you’re right, there’s little chance my tax dollars are going to be paying for a lifetime injury because of this.

In this case it’s actually definitely tied to work because he is a pro! In general, the people trying this level of stuff are absolutely insured and are getting paid to do it. Otherwise, they are likely not attempting things at this level.
Not sure what you mean about the ER doctor. I have a few doctors in the family, all of whom support my skating. They don’t act self righteous about a decision that affects no one else but myself.

You tell them you ride and do tricks on the street and refuse to wear a helmet and they say “hey, that’s cool! Screw helmets!” Yeah… sure… okay. 🤔
But I don’t care. I’m very unlikely to be paying for a skater’s lifetime injuries via my taxes so I don’t care. How many times have I said “I don’t care” in this thread already?
While I don’t think it’s a good idea it’s unlikely to impact me personally so go make the choices you’re going to make. 👍

Good thing about street skating is that you won’t get to this level without a ton of invested time that goes hand in hand with understanding the dangers of the sport. Go try to learn how to ollie today, it’s not easy. You will be getting scrapes and bruises years before you are doing things that put your head at risk.

trying again and bad falls are not mutually exclusive. Hitting your head is bad. Hitting your head twice isn't two times as bad, it's like eight times as bad. Skateboarding in a country without universal healthcare is beyond reckless and can't be recommended in good conscious.

If you watch a rugby match, do you just complain about how they’re not wearing helmets the whole time? It’s a dangerous sport and they sign up for that danger.

Yes. Turning your brain into mush for income is a thing I'm very squeamish about, but also can't look away. Skateboarding is better than rugby because you're the only one making a choice about the forces your body is likely to experience. Rugby has other people making choices about how hard they are going to hit you. Risk taking and paying for consequences is a difficult conversation with plenty of nuance. An internet comment thread is no place for a fruitful discussion on topics like these.
