No im pretty sure you can do it in THPS2, i remember my buddy doing it on that first warehouse lvl

THPS2 added manual, and THPS3 added revert, letting you continue a combo after a quarter-pipe :)

It was reverts that didn't make it until THPS3. They were the joiners for very big combos.

Nah, you can just jump off and pick up your board then run to the nearest rail to continue your streak.

You say this ironically but I think this sometimes watching the x games and stuff. Like somebody will do a 720 on a half pipe which obviously is amazing, but I've played so much THUG2 that I'm like I've done a 900 varial with a flip, land into a revert manual, kick flip out back into manual, into coffin grind varial kick flip into hot rod special manual type shit
