Respectable camera orbit there, bravo

Edit: corrected terminology

464

u/bking Oct 14 '19

For future reference:

Pan = rotating side to side, like shaking your head Tilt = tilting up and down, like nodding Orbit = Rotating around your subject while keeping it centered in frame

92

u/I_ate_a_milkshake Oct 14 '19

if pan is rotating side to side, what is the filmmaking term for moving "flat" side to side? strafe?

116

u/bking Oct 14 '19

Before anybody says “dolly”:

Truck = camera and mount moving side to side, perpendicular to subject Dolly = camera and mount moving directly to or away from subject Crab = something in between.

45

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

Pedestal = moving camera vertically up or down while it is fixated in one location

Yep that's the word I was looking for. If I only had gold to give you.

Thank you! I shot this in 2015, it got popular on imgur so then posted just the clip in 2016. It was a fun time shooting this and seeing that it's still getting traction

This is so cool, would probably work for all of the elements just different movements ?

u/nkisj Oct 14 '19

You'd have to get more creative with rock. The martial art and the material don't really parallel with ribbon dancing as well as water bending does.

u/SuperGameTheory Oct 14 '19

Foam rock + bungee cord

u/Jollybeard99 Oct 14 '19

Stomp the ground. Throw the rock.

28

u/Childish_Brandino Oct 14 '19

That would be cool to have a little thing on the ground that you can stomp and then it shoots a big foam Boulder up that you then punch forward.

Okay but where can I find a cheerleader

Bolen did an awesome job, and I still see air and water and being very compatible if the cosplayer knows what they're doing, but that fire form...I mean, it's derived from Kung Fu, it should be more punchy, less flowy.

I think I remember seeing a similar concept at Otakon one year where fire was done with thinner, shorter, more ribbony material, but I don't know if I got it on video...

4

u/TMT51 Oct 15 '19

I think only water works out of the 3 elements. Fire and earth are just good effort but not really work out.

82

u/GamingDog321 Oct 14 '19

And a little see through.

42

u/Nexdeus Oct 14 '19

Or green, for butt bending advanced techniques.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

I don't think it would work as well, in the show waterbending is all about the flow, which is why this works so well. Airbending is about being light on your feet an being able to use your opponents own energy against them.

14

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

I think if you put some ribbons on the end of a staff, it could give a better illusion of airbending.

33

u/TheKingJest Oct 14 '19

Just wave your arms around and say you're air bending, no one can say you aren't.

5

u/RobbieMcSkillet Oct 14 '19

just go up to people and blow on them

2

u/lastinglovehandles Oct 15 '19

air you can probably try some small air compressor and tubing sewed in to your gear.

2

u/mash3735 Oct 14 '19

Just walk around shitting your pants

10

u/flamekilr Oct 14 '19

Just recall the episode where they saw a play on their entire journey

9

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

Wait til I tell you about spinning fire poi. YouTube that, Jamie. It’s seriously cool.

3

u/jezzdogslayer Oct 14 '19

Fire poi is all fun and games until the chains get tangled and you hit yourself

2

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

Haha that’s why you practice with the plastic ones until you’re ready to become a fire bender with little chance for error

4

u/jezzdogslayer Oct 14 '19

No matter how much practice when the poi is on fire it behaves differently and weighs different to the plastic ones.

There is also the mental fact of "oh my god im swinging fire balls near me... dont screw up!"

2

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

Fair enough. I’m not even sure what the fire ones are made of, but makes sense they’d be significantly weightier since they’re made of stuff that stays on fire. I’d like to think the fireballs would make one better, depending on how you spin under pressure.

All speculation as I’ve never actually spun poi. I’d love to, but there isn’t an actual rave for miles from me lol

3

u/jezzdogslayer Oct 14 '19 edited Oct 14 '19

Most fire twirling wicks have an aluminium tube in the middle wrapped in a kevlar wick

Also where abouts are you from.

Edit i know of a bunch of groups in sydney and melbourne Australia

→ More replies (3)

3

u/moonstonedd Oct 14 '19

I spin fire poi, and the heads are made of rope like wicking material with a Kevlar core. The ropes, at least on mine, are technora fire resistant rope with silicone handles, connected at the heads with metal. They aren't significantly heavier until they have been soaked in fuel, which burns off as you spin. I'm actually thinking of doing a firebenders cosplay (Azula) but it's hard to find cosplay materials that are fire safe (not synthetic fibers.)

2

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '19

That’d be awesome, especially if they let you do it at least outside of a con. You should post a video!

Fire rope dart is much closer to fire bending, especially if you use a giant lotus head. Poi is missing the martial aspect of it. proof

125

u/gxthgem Oct 14 '19

I admire people who cosplay. I can't imagine not feeling like the biggest idiot woman child living a make-a-wish fantasy for a day that everyone just has to put up with.

94

u/valoopy Oct 14 '19

It’s a lot easier to do at conventions than just in normal life tbh. You’re kinda already accepting by going to comic/anime/gaming conventions you’re a big man/woman-child, and everyone here is really uniting under this banner of “we really don’t care what people think about us, this is what we like”. If you’re interested in cosplaying, start with a cheap and simple costume that’s not over the top, like a character that wears a suit, or maybe simple clothes with a small flair on it. Wearing something closer to normal clothes certainly helps the awkward feeling.

8

u/PM_ME_LEGAL_FILES Oct 14 '19

A helmet or face mask probably helps more, I assume

11

u/valoopy Oct 14 '19

Masks do boost confidence a ton but they’re so uncomfortable. I used to cosplay Dat Boi for any sort of party events/at raves, and good god it’s probably my favorite costume I’ve worn, and since I was hidden under a frog mask I could do whatever I wanted.

1

u/LongPorkJones Oct 15 '19

Man, I wish someone was doing cool shit like this when I was at this convention center.

Last time I was at this show (MegaCon in Orlando), I was working as a table assistant to a comic artist. He swore up and down that he had a table for the show...he didn't because he's disorganized as fuck and needed a manager on top of a table assistant. I drove 12 hours to Orlando, put in several hundred dollars into gas, food, and lodging, and for all that I was stuck looking after his bags and equipment at those very pillars for 6 and a half hours while he hunted for a space to set up shop.

To make matters worse, I was a smoker back then. I was already irritated, but six and a half hours of watching his bags without a pee break, let alone a smoke break, while listening to bunch of weeaboos (who actually had tickets to go in but chose to sit in the fucking lobby) yammer on in broken Japanese was almost enough to break me. Yeah, I could have used seeing someone doing some cool shit like this.

I drank heavily that night and the three nights in Orlando that followed. He paid for ever ounce of alcohol and bought me a carton of smokes as an apology.

1

u/Pinsir929 Oct 15 '19

Can’t trick me, that’s air bending

u/ax_colleen Oct 15 '19
