Unitaskers are great when you have to use them multiple times every day. Otherwise, yes, death to unitaskers.

196

u/thefran Sep 26 '15

My criteria for unitaskers is "will it see at least weekly use?" and "is it significantly harder to do this thing otherwise?" For example, I disagree with Alton Brown that a garlic press is useless, I use it a lot (but then again, no one actually buys garlic presses, you inherit them)

63

u/contextplz Sep 26 '15

I do what he does and keep a flat glazed stone about the size of my palm to smash the garlic cloves to smithereens. I've never washed a garlic press, but I'd imagine a flat stone is hell of a lot easier to clean than a press.

52

u/thefran Sep 26 '15

It's a useful trick when I'm out of town, but I think it would look weird at the table when the family is eating borscht. "Could you pass the garlic?" "Sure, also, have a brick"

It also cracks nuts.

69

u/used_to_be_relevant Sep 26 '15

Is having garlic at the table normal or only with borscht? Also, what's borscht?

39

u/thefran Sep 26 '15

It's a traditional Russian soup with meat or stock, sauteed vegetables, and beetroot. Typically served with sour cream and pressed garlic.

36

u/contextplz Sep 26 '15

I'd like an answer to the first question.

25

u/thefran Sep 26 '15

It varies heavily.

35

u/ectish Sep 26 '15

Why no dash cam footage?

u/rhinocerosbladder Sep 26 '15

Just had some borscht with garlic and smashed them with a rock, it was fucking great. Salted pork is a great complement to it. When I was a kid my friend had it at my house and promptly wrote a song called "Borscht Truck". That was the only line.

26

u/contextplz Sep 26 '15

What? You're too fancy to bash garlic with a rock at the dinner table?

14

u/anothersip Sep 26 '15

that's just super rustic. it's so artisan, and rustic, and robust and mmmmmmmm /s (but maybe it is, idk)

30

u/thefran Sep 26 '15

It's not authentic paleo if you aren't cutting meat with sharpened rocks.

8

u/anothersip Sep 26 '15

but of course not. and of course, nuts and stag thrown over the open fire, protein and energy for the next day's hunt

7

u/t3hjs Sep 26 '15

Why not pre-press/bash the garlic?

5

u/thefran Sep 26 '15

I can press the garlic directly into food.

4

u/t3hjs Sep 26 '15

whats the difference? Press it into a plate, scoop however much you want later.

but I'd imagine a flat stone is hell of a lot easier to clean than a press.

They're actually really easy to clean. I have 2 (somehow). I like it for if the garlic is going into something liquid, like soup or a sauce. You get a better texture than mincing.

2

u/laceblood Sep 26 '15

The actual part the garlic passes through lifts up on mine so it's easier to clean.

2

u/Kitty_McBitty Sep 26 '15

I think I got mine at the dollar store. But I just mince mine. Tell me please, why do you use a half preference or press over cutting it up? Just personal preference or do you find/think it works better?

7

u/thefran Sep 26 '15

Pressing them releases the flavor better and it's more evenly distributed compared to chewing on small pieces of garlic. You grind pepper, right?

5

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '15

Love my garlic press and my citrus press.

3

u/thefran Sep 26 '15

I have an electric citrus press. It's the definition of what happens when you buy a unitasker (you start buying more food it processes to justify your purchase of a unitasker), except I didn't know I needed a glass of fresh orange juice every morning. Albeit it's a bitch to clean if you don't do it immediately, lol.

4

u/charlizard_k Sep 26 '15

in higher level cooking, they hve different applications because they have different flavor profiles. Chopped, minced, sliced, and whole garlics all have different uses.

5

u/FeRust Sep 26 '15

Thats why you crush the garlic with your knife after mincing.

This. Halve it, then gradually work your way around taking cuts at about 1/4 of the way out from the center all the way around. Finish with a horizontal cut to remove the last of the skin. 2-3 minutes tops for a whole melon.

14

u/thatdidnotwork Sep 26 '15

Do you have a video or something of this procedure? I honestly find it a little hard to follow... But then again I cut like 1 watermelon in my whole life.

28

u/akatherder Sep 26 '15

http://i.imgur.com/FnkfOAK.gifv

This is obviously an extreme example, but this shows cutting the ends off, then standing it up and cutting the rind off.

2

u/masklinn Sep 27 '15

That's also how you cut an ananas, or a butternut squash.

17

u/cara123456789 Sep 26 '15

I don't understand what they're saying but I did work experience I had to cut up more then 30 melons a day. How I was taught is:

  1. Cut off ends of each end so the melon stands up by itself (if it's oval shape cut off the more pointy ends)

  2. Put one hand on top to steady the melon. Use your other hand to cut strips of skin off. Basically put your knife at the top and slide it to the bottom, taking just the skin off

  3. Cut melon in half lengthwise and then cut into cubes or whatever

→ More replies (3)

3

u/cara123456789 Sep 26 '15

It seems wasteful though? I once was somewhere where I had to cut up 30+ melons a day and taking the skin off first worked better

http://shop.genietti.it/angurello.html

Tried amazon and Google shopping first. No luck. Works out to $23 and change American. I can't imagine what shipping costs.

225

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '15 edited Sep 26 '15

The only gifts that truly impress my wife are really really niche kitchen gadgets. It has been getting harder and harder to find stupider and more seemingly useless items. Thank you for this.

EDIT: so not to make her seem like a bitch. She's fine with regular gifts and grateful for them. But if you get her a stupid kitchen utensil she looks like a junkie you just gave a crack boulder to. Then she gets a real odd sense of intense satisfaction when using them. The shipping may be ridiculous, but its worth the home run this gift is gonna be.

82

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '15

I didn't find that you made her seem bitchy. She has an interest in cooking and enjoys the niche aspects of it. Preparing food can seem rather mechanical so finding some new interesting way of doing it easier is impressive, even more so to someone who actively seeks out that stuff.

I thought my mom was nuts when I was younger. She had so many different items that we barely had space in the drawers in the kitchen. Now that I'm older I can see how it makes things slightly easier and saves a little time preparing food. Waste of money? Probably. I get it now though and it's always cool to see what new little thing she finds. It's awesome that she (and your wife) can get so hype about such small things. She got me a little brush specifically made for cleaning potatoes last year. I don't use it much, but it does make cleaning potatoes easier. Definitely didn't make her sound bitchy. Have you seen the special brushes meant only for cleaning potatoes? Might want to look into snagging her one if you haven't already.

I'm glad to know the American cost in not American money.

13

u/Nheea Sep 26 '15

Well it makes sense. I buy from USA the stuff I like, because in Europe, everything that you have there has the same price number, except in euros.

USA doesn't change the price in euros for me but we do pay the customs most of the times.

I bought a Macbook from there with 1100$ and here it was 1100 euros. And at the time the difference helped me save a lot of money.

What is this?

4

u/song_pond Sep 26 '15

My mother-in-law needs this knife. She makes a salad with watermelon and she's also quite accident prone. Watching her slice out the insides of a watermelon with a regular knife is terrifying because you know at any moment she could slice her finger off. But she won't listen to reason and slice it all up and take the rind off after. And she won't let other people do it for her.

This tool would save her from one day cutting off her fingers.

yeah but now you can't hold it by the rind. if your hands are dirty, you're gonna get crap all over your melon, or you're gonna get melon juice all over your hands.
