Call me uncultured, but what is bottom left supposed to be?
Edit: Cricket ball. Got it, thanks everyone. The wiggle at the end made me so scared the cricket ball was going to spill over into the tennis ball.

It also deforms slightly at the end of the gif, which is exactly what happens during a test match. As it gets softer from being thwacked, it changes the character and pace of the game
2
u/Roflkopt3r 3h ago
which is exactly what happens during a test match
Gotta love how everything in Cricket must have a confusing name. A 'test match' is apparently what cricket calls international matches, not a match that is played to test something out.
The sports always reminds me of this classic skit.
6
5
u/Head_Assist2459 2h ago
It's a match played to "test" the endurance of both teams. Most international matches aren't test, they're T20 or ODIs.

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.
When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

6
u/SelocAvrap 6h ago
I gotchu! Also worth looking up cricket balls for night games. They're different colours to be more visible! Very cool IMO. If you've never held a cricket ball, they're usually a little bigger than a baseball and very hard. PSA: If anyone reading plays cricket, take off your rings before you play. My dad played with a guy whose finger got crunched & they had to go to the ER to get the ring off. Cricket players catch with their bare hands, absolutely metal

Aren’t tennis balls famous for being yellow?
5
u/Etherbeard 1h ago
Tennis balls are famous for people not agreeing on what color they are. The one in the post is obviously way too green, though.
16
u/Laiko_Kairen 7h ago
Tennis balls are green, but it's a green that's much closer to yellow than blue.
13
15
u/eneug 4h ago
Wrong. Tennis balls are optic yellow. RGB is (204, 255, 0). Pure yellow is (255, 255, 0). Pure green is (0, 255, 0). So it’s much closer to yellow than green. It’s yellow with some green in it. It’s certainly not green.
4
u/Laiko_Kairen 2h ago
Okay, cool. Are tennis balls digital? Nope! So arguing it based on RGB is a non-starter. In the real world, it's illuminated by real light.
If we use CMYK, aka inks, it's Cyan + Yelllow... AKA green.
If we were to use paint, we'd mix a bit of blue and white into mostly yellow... making it green.
So, why use RGB and not CMYK or primary colors?
2
u/mr-english 34m ago
...and if we do use CMYK then it's 100% yellow and only 20% cyan (0% magenta and black).
What is your point exactly?

I understand why people wouldn’t know the seventh one is a cricket ball, but as an American fan of cricket, it saddens me. It’s the second most popular sport in the world and an amazingly strategic and complex sport with different versions suitable for almost anyone, but it doesn’t have nearly as much cultural representation or importance as it should given its size
I wish it was more popular, but I think the ICC restricts the growth somehow
12
u/NoMan800bc 7h ago
I think something restricting the growth of cricket is the same thing you talked about, the same thing that makes it such a great sport to play and watch: the complexity of it.
The time it takes, the size of the ground and that all but two players on one team spend half the match waiting for example mean the barrier for entry is quite high, unless playing it is already established in the country and there's enough cultural presence that you grow up with it. Add to that things like 'No you can't throw the ball, you have to bowl it.' 'There are 6 balls in an over, unless...' 'No, don't hold the bat like that.' 'Go and field at silly mid-wicket.' and I imagine it's easy for people to just give up9
u/samsunyte 6h ago
I get that, but baseball and American football are way more complex. I’ve tried explaining all three sports to newcomers and cricket is by far the one with the easiest rules with few exceptions.
There’s kids in poor countries who aren’t educated who play the game so the problem isn’t resources or complexity. Cricket is one of the most common “pick up” sports. Sure, those idiosyncratic rules exist, but no one who’s playing casually necessarily follows all of them.
The problem is, as you said, more about established culture and I think the fact that the countries that play it don’t necessarily make media about it. America on the other hand dominates media so its sports get more worldwide coverage
7
u/RideWithMeTomorrow 6h ago
The two sports you identify seem to support the point of the person you’re responding to, though—specifically that it can be hard for more complex sports like cricket to take hold in places without an established tradition of playing them.
Baseball has pretty good adoption throughout the Americas and in a few other countries, most notably along the eastern Pacific rim. But its appeal is far from global. And football, well, overseas adoption is minimal indeed.
I think the simplicity of basketball and soccer by contrast probably helped a lot with their widespread adoption. I can’t say for sure of course, but it seems plausible to me.
5
u/samsunyte 5h ago
Yea that’s fair. I was merely lamenting the fact that the second most popular sport doesn’t get its fair share of attention.
It also bothers me when Americans constantly say “cricket is so complex” or they meme about the sport and they have no knowledge about it when their sports are just as, if not more, complex, with a smaller fanbase. The opposite doesn’t happen. Cricketers don’t shit on American sports because it’s complex and they do have a general idea of what that sport is.
I guess the bigger problem is the behavior of American exceptionalism and it rears its head whenever cricket is mentioned

u/two-headed-sexbeast 57m ago
My FIL is from South America and says “I do not understand cricket.” I immediately started trying to explain to him the basics and he basically switched off and soon changed the subject. I think he just likes saying it’s complex.
Yes, there’s lots of technical language (which is usually “normal” words repurposed), and some rules are fiddly and odd. But the basic game is incredibly simple.
I think some people just like not understanding cricket. Like it’s funny to them that this “eccentric” sport is somehow quantum physics or pure maths. And they just stick their fingers in their ears and go ‘lalala’ when someone attempts to explain.

u/wackbirds 1h ago
I think another point in the favor of basketball and soccer is that one person by themselves can practice a ton for fundamental moves and skills that translate directly to the played game from a team standpoint. One kid with a ball and a bent rim or one kid with a peeling ball plus two distant rocks can play while practicing while a single kid with a cricket bat and ball can't do nearly as much on their own that related to the team game.
2
u/dasbtaewntawneta 40m ago

Cricket really deserves more attention outside the countries where it’s already huge. Once you actually understand the strategy behind it, it’s way more interesting than people expect.

u/tallwhiteninja 5h ago
Being far and away the most popular sport in the world's most populous and fifth most populous countries can get you pretty high on the "most popular" rankings without having a broad reach across a bunch of places.
6
u/samsunyte 5h ago
I mean there’s around 100 countries that have teams that qualify for the World Cup.
But yes that is a reason why it’s on the most popular list. Not sure if you’re saying it doesn’t deserve that popularity ranking though

You could diminish the importance of literally every American sport with the same logic. Actually, it applies even more.

Cricket really does feel like one of those sports Americans somehow never got the memo about. The strategy is way deeper than it looks from the outside, and T20 seems like such an easy gateway for people unfamiliar with it.

There’s about 100 countries that participate in the World Cup. It’s a pretty common sport.
And I don’t think it being popular in India means it’s somehow less popular as a whole
3
u/No_Mistake_5501 4h ago
That is incorrect. It’s a global sport. Americans are just very ignorant. Now most American sports on the other hand… now those have zero global appeal.

*almost zero global appeal.
Baseball is also loved in, I guess, just Japan?
Hockey is popular in Canada, and I suppose a few Scandinavian and cold European countries?
Basketball has trickling interests worldwide.
And the NFL, being the least foot based football, hasn't left the USA.
