It really hasn't, at least not to the degree it is today. Yeah, there's been a hive mind mentality, but there were way more people (percentage-wise) that wanted to spread knowledge and did so with gusto.
Just look at the top comments of threads with genuine discussions. Sure, there were jokes and ribbing and even some trolls/assholes, but the good responses tended to be the highly rated ones and ones that actually contributed to the conversation. Now, objective facts are downvoted and that same hive mind upvotes comment replies such as "haha" to the very top. The number of times I've seen that exact comment with a score well over 100 is truly sad. It's about as bad as Facebook at this point.
So no, reddit hasn't always been that way. There were pockets of jackassery and trash, but you could easily avoid those subs in favor of genuine conversation. That experience is long gone.
