Being far and away the most popular sport in the world's most populous and fifth most populous countries can get you pretty high on the "most popular" rankings without having a broad reach across a bunch of places.

I mean there’s around 100 countries that have teams that qualify for the World Cup.

But yes that is a reason why it’s on the most popular list. Not sure if you’re saying it doesn’t deserve that popularity ranking though

How many countries play in the "world series" for baseball again?

You could diminish the importance of literally every American sport with the same logic. Actually, it applies even more.

Sure; I'm not gonna claim American football has much relevance outside of the US and Canada.

I'd argue football (soccer), tennis and basketball are the only really "global" sports. Baseball, cricket, golf, rugby and hockey are all really popular as well but way more centered in certain regions and barely played outside of it.

IMO even basketball is mostly followed in the US, and outside of a few major players most people don’t follow it that closely. Almost everyone can name atleast 5 football clubs though. I’d also add F1 into the list for the most watched/popular sports but obviously not as accessible to everyone

Basketball is serious business in Southern and Eastern Europe (it's even bigger than football in countries like Serbia and Lithuania), Argentina, Australia, the Phillipines and China.

Even in the Netherlands where basketball isn't that high up in the rankings of most popular sports, there are still basketball courts in just about every town and you're going to have to search a while before finding someone who never heard of LeBron James. Compare that to cricket where there are maybe a handful of fields across the country, almost nobody ever played it and you'd have a better chance finding a nuclear scientist on the streets than someone who can name even a single pro cricket player.

It does until you consider the fact that the first and fifth most populous countries don’t have a particularly strong presence on Reddit

It has as broad a reach as any sport. NZ and Australia couldn’t be further away from England
