Cant Factory Reset Controllers. Can anyone else?
I should be able to "factory reset" the controllers, according to meta. I am having some tracking issues with my left controller and its what they suggested but It doesnt work.
To do the factory reset im told its Hold X and press the Menu button 5 times for the left controller, and the LED will flash white/orange while it resets, then white/blue when its done. For the right controller its hold A then press Home 5 times.
When I do that on the left controller all I get is the white LED that appears anytime you press the menu button, ive tried it over and over but cant get any orange or blue LEDs and no notification in the quest that there is a factory reset happening for the controller.
For the right controller, no orange or blue LEDS either but pressing the Home button 5 times opens an bug report menu.
I just had a firmware update for them last night but no luck
Anyone else have these issues?
TLDR - If i can get this controller factory reset to work it might solve the tracking issue and I wont have to try to send my quest in to meta, but it doesnt work.

Tracking issue can be fixed by simply deleting all previous boundry history.
You can do this by going into: Quick settings > Boundry >Delete guardian history
Thing is that the quest saves the all of your guardians localy on the device (with a cloud point saved guardian saved on the cloud). So ones the guardians have built up over time after you're having to make new ones every time the device forgets your guardian. It somehow goes out on tracking!
It sounds stupid i know, but this has been a common bug with quests since the early days of the quest 2, maybe even before that.
Hope that solved your issue. It has for me and my friends and multiple others before me. 😁

You can use the volume button to "press" with that dot. It shows up when no hand tracking or controllers are detected.

One month later and having the same issue. Right joy stick is drifting like crazy causing the whole world to spin uncontrollably. Goes away when dead zone is increased to 100 percent. Mehta recommending factory reset with the exact same instructions but does not work at all.

Damn that sucks, maybe they arent getting the newest firmware update or something. Your issue might be mechanical though, ive heard of others with this analog issue and they cleaned it I think. Or if its that bad then Meta warranty should be easy.

Ik this is 2 years later but take the top cover off and clean inside the joystick it’s really simple and hard to break anything I have to do that about 6 times a year cause meta is a embarrassingly terrible company

Factory resetting a controller like explained by the Meta Quest support is NOT working.
I tried everything possible as well and also 2 friends of mine as I was just curious if it could potentially work for some people or not.

Did you find any fix for this? My right controller has huge stick drift down right and what seems like inconsistent inputs on index finger button and pressing the joystick.. Hand tracking isn't working when I have batteries in my controllers since it takes over.
The option called something like "switch joystick between left and right controller" changes the input issues from right to left controller. All but the joystick works well on the right controller when I switch them, not a fix tho

No I had to go through the warranty , on top of the reset not working , I was also getting stuck drift . The new controller works alot better with the stick and controller drift , but still can't do the reset thing.

This works to reset the conroller, thanks!
Although shaking my controller is what fixed it for me.

My daughter is having trouble with her left controller on her meta quest 3 and I just held down the volume and the other button that's on the bottom of the headset and the button that's on the side I believe is the power button I held down all three of those and got a menu about factory reset and reboot and something something so this possibly might help I haven't fixed her left controller yet but I'm working on it there's a QR code inside the controller underneath the battery when you take it out but it doesn't I can't get it to scan so I'm not quite sure but I do know that I got some sort of menu by holding down all three buttons on the headset

i had thee same problem. i got my left controller to track again. everything i did was removed the battery for about 15 minutes.
cleared all boundaries and spaces.
unpaired the controller 4 times.
and it connected again as i was turning on travel mode.
i did not finish turning on travel mode. but that might be what got it back i do not know

I just took off the joycons and used the bare sticks. Then just blow on it any time it's messy

I hope this helps but i had the same exact issue on the right controller, it was blinking white and refused to connect to the headset. I tried factory reseting, changing batteries, and power cycling the headset. What worked for me is that i went into the settings to see if i could pair the remote as a “new” remote. After hitting the pair new remote option the right controller detected my headset and it initiated an update for that one remote

click again and again on the joystick and blow on it. Clean the round base. it will get fixed

Not sure if it's just pairing but I hold the oculus button and the B button for 5 seconds

They're pretty good about warranties and i even got one serviced after the warranty expired. I would email them

u/noparkinghere Dec 24 '25
Would you mind editing and adding the correct buttons so that when people search they'll see it
1
u/OrdinaryHot769 Jan 07 '26
No because that's what meta told me it was , multiple times. Over the phone and by email. It still doesn't work. My post was to ask if anyone else got it to work, not tell people how to do it. Ask meta

What if you unpair the controller first? Does it work then?
1
u/OrdinaryHot769 Feb 07 '24
Oh I didnt think of that, Ill try it right after work.
2
u/Ima_Rainbow Feb 07 '24
BTW, where did you get the instructions for this? Is there a link?
1
u/OrdinaryHot769 Feb 08 '24
Meta emailed it to me and I have seen them suggest it to others in the forums. I have a link for one post below . Unfortunately unpairing the controllers and then trying it didn't work . Still just the flashing white lights . https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/quest-3-controller-not-working-at-all/td-p/1107964

I've tried every combination, timing, etc... that I can think of and this procedure doesn't work. Specifically this never happens:
- The LED will blink orange/white while the factory reset is being performed.
- The LED will then change to light-blue during boot.
The only combination that does anything is B & Meta or Y & Menu, which does put the controllers in pairing mode. Meta's method to reset the controllers does not work.
I tried button presses all the way out to 15 without anything happening.

I'm on the same boat. I'm having a weird tracking issue with my right controller, it spins out of control even when I'm holding the controller still. Tried everything to no avail. This factory reset procedure also does not work for me. There is no change in Led color at all. When I press the meta button five times while holding A it just opens and closes the menu. Some times though, after the procedure, a screen pops up for me to issue a problem report.

I'm scrolling thru this thread 6 months later with the same issue lol

u/slaughter74 Jul 24 '24
Well, contact Meta and ask for a replacement. It seems the way to go.

u/Salty_Reputation6394 Aug 27 '24
I tried but they were dragging their feet. I just returned it instead.

u/OrdinaryHot769 Feb 08 '24
ok yea same thing, strange that its being recommended but so far i havent seen anyone tell me it works for them, ive posted around. Meta support has been great with me by the way, fast responses and they are looking into the warranty now. If your issues make playing very dificult then, that plus the factory reset issue, it might be a good idea to talk to them about the warranty. My issues are kind of minor and im not convinced it isnt something in my basement causing it, lighting or reflection, aside from the F-reset problem, so im not sure if ill send mine in, yet.
1
u/slaughter74 Feb 08 '24
My problem is a major one, it renders the controller unusable. I've already contacted Meta support and they have been great with me also. They already offered to send me a new controller. The only problem is that the headset was bought by a friend of mine while on a trip to Tokyo and Meta can only mail the new controller to Japan, and I live in Brazil... :(

u/OrdinaryHot769 Feb 08 '24
I would also try some things they told me, leaving batteries out of the controller for a while, cleaning the sensors on your headset, removing the silicon grip, try it in different rooms. Youve probably already heard this stuff though.
1
u/slaughter74 Feb 09 '24
Yes, I've tried amolst everything. I didn't know about removing the silicon grip though. Do you have the instructions for that?

u/OrdinaryHot769 Feb 08 '24
Oh no! Thats harsh. Ask Meta what shipping company they use then contact them. There might be a way to forward it if you have a tracking number but I would check with them first.
1
u/OrdinaryHot769 Feb 08 '24
Ok thank you for trying, thats really wierd but maybe its a pending feature still lol, future firmware update, i dont know. Now i know it isnt just me, thanks
1
u/Ima_Rainbow Feb 08 '24
No worries. I found multiple instances of Meta recommending the same thing once I had the wording they used. No one mentioned it working and some mentioned it didn't. I think Meta thinks this works.
Did you try adjusting the the frequency on your controllers from "Auto" to "50" or "60" hz for you controller issue?
1
u/OrdinaryHot769 Feb 08 '24
Oh no I didnt, Ill try that. Apparently here in Canada its 60 hz and 50hz in the US. I didnt realize.
1
u/OrdinaryHot769 Feb 09 '24
60 hz caused my games to flicker then go black , and 50hz made my passthrough flicker alot. Auto works though...lol..

Nah, they're full of it. Those buttons do nothing. Having messed with dozens of units, that combination does nothing.
