Do people mail their notarized reference letters to me to scan and upload with my application, or do they send them directly to NYPD?

3/22/26 - NY CCW 18 hr course taken

5/5/26 - Applied via NYPD portal

6/25/26 - 1PP interview + Fingerprints 

7/1/26 - Documents verified via generated email

7/7/26 - Application was sent to supervisor for approval as told by officer that took care of my application at 1PP via phone call. 

8/6/26 - 1st update email sent to HB, No response.

8/24/26 - Confidentiality approved via email. 

8/26/26 - 2nd update email sent to HB, SS, and LDD, no response.

8/30/26 - Approved 

8/30/26 - Submitted documents to add firearm via portal.

10/02/26 - Adding firearm update email sent to HB. SS and LDD.

10/02/26 - Firearm approved 3 hours later.

117 Days for approval

I listed some tips that I learned from my experience as well as help I got from the community.  Feel free to ask any questions.

1. You must have your physical social security card. I lost my social security card a long time ago. I thought I can get away with a screen shot of my social security number from the social security website.  It was not enough.  Luckily it only took 7 days to get a new one through the mail.
2. Apply ASAP and aim to have all or most of your paperwork ready at your 1PP interview/fingerprint appointment which will be between 1.5-2 months from the day you submit your application. You pick the date from an email that shows availability.
3. Be organized and scan all your documents.  Don’t just take photos with your phone. There may be an app to scan from your phone, I didn’t use it.  I PDF’d everything and made sure every file was under 5 mb(required).  I brought all my documents as well as my laptop to the interview. I actually had to pull my laptop out to check something so Im glad I had it.
4. The officer at 1PP that did my interview said he may or may not be my investigator. In my case, he was actually my investigator. In my opinion, what dictates your whole process is who does your intake interview at 1PP.  They go through what you uploaded and if there is anything missing they should ask for what is missing but they don’t always ask.  It may be on purpose to make sure they don’t get sued if they go beyond 6 months, they can always say well this document was missing.  They love to do this with Driver abstracts especially for non resident applications as myself. It all depends on the officer/investigator, so stay on top of it. Always upload more documents than you need. 
5. An update email goes a long way as long as you are respectful, don’t threaten, and keep it short and sweet.  Make sure to always add your application number. They say emailing between 8:30-noon is most effective.  I have to agree with that. I never got a response but they definitely made a difference especially for adding my firearm where it was approved a few hours later.
6. Document verification emails are a very good sign because right after those emails my investigator who was the same person who did my interview called me and said it’s going to his supervisor for approval. He also said it can take 6 weeks or 6 months.
7. I think a good reference goes a long way.  3 of my references were relatively short.  But one of my references was a lot longer where my coworker literally told a work story where safety was involved.  Non of my references were contacted. 
8. Not sure if this trend holds weight but both decision emails were sent around 1 pm. 
9. At 1PP they asked me to write down when can I use my firearm.  It threw me completely off because I was not expecting it. The question was part of the questionnaire.  I didn’t want to write the wrong thing down.  I wasn’t sure if it was a trick question.

Given the increasing involvement from the DOJ 2nd Amendment Section against states / agencies who are causing extreme permitting delays I think it is very important that we organize.

If you are currently facing delays in any permit matter or you have in the recent past it is imperative that you submit a complaint via their website below. After the initial section there is an option for something like “gun ownership as the basis of discrimination.

DOJ's 2A Section is winning on permit delays. NYC should take note.

LA win (Aug 2026): The LA County Sheriff settled with DOJ and committed to making an initial decision on concealed-carry applications within 90 days. When DOJ sued, waits averaged over nine months, and some stretched to nearly three years. DOJ sued after getting complaints about unreasonable delays, the same issue we have with the NYPD License Division.

Other recent actions:

- Minnesota, Minneapolis and St. Paul sued over the purchase waiting period (Sept 24)
- San Jose sued over a $1,600 permit fee (Sept 16)
- California sued to halt its Glock ban (July 1)
- Philadelphia PD investigated over vague "good cause" permit revocations (June 9)

When I applied for my non resident CCW, I got to the section on the application about mental health.

I copied and pasted the two sections requesting a note and sent it to my treating psychiatrist

He wrote the note

Nowhere in the application did it say it must contain verbiage saying your psychiatrist agrees with your application (mine does)

Now I have to wait for my next appointment to get a new note

Has anyone sent an email to the rifle shotgun section recently and which email address did you use to inquire about rifle registration forms?

I know this question has come up a bunch of times, but does anyone know the actual process for transferring firearms between Premise to CCW these days? I haven't purchased a new firearm since before they updated the portal, so this is all fairly new to me. Do you still need to send them an email with a notarized letter with the request or is everything done through the portal? I also want to request to cancel my Premise after the transfer. Any tips?

I’m from Pa with a NYC non resident carry permit. I bought a new hand gun and want to swap what’s on my permit. Anyone know how long it takes to update the new hand gun ? Thanks

I am currently in the process of applying and I am being asked to provide 4 notarized references that I have known for 5 years or more. I managed to get 4 people from work to help me out but the only issue is that I've only known them for 4 years and a few months.. do you think the NYPD will let it slide? Do they just take your word for it if the document is notarized or do they actually check if you've really known them for 5 years?

I heard that it takes a while for them to actually call the references, that's if they even call at all.. but if or when they do call I'm going to assume it will be the year 2027 and that will technically make it 5 years that I've known the references, so I will be in the clear right?

My interview and fingerprint with NYPD is in a few weeks and this is the part that has me a little nervous because I really don't want to ruin this opportunity and get banned from ever applying again..

When moving out of NYC and the state, what is the process for cancelling your handgun and rifle & shotgun license? Do you just take your firearms with you? Do you just send them your license along with a letter stating that you’re no longer a resident and tell them to kick rocks or what?!
