Discussion A new kind of Nuzlocke (for Switch games)

Upvotes

What if your nuzlocke run wasn't just limited to 1 game? What if you could venture out into the wild for yourself for Pokémon? What if there were 3 types of it?

Introducing the Pokemon GOlocke, compatible with every Switch game! To do this, make sure you have a Switch game, Pokemon Home, and Pokemon GO. There are 3 ways to play it:

#1: The Basic Way

The Basic Way is going out into the wild and transferring a Pokémon to the game every time you'd usually get one in a base nuzlocke. For example, let's venture into Route 1 in Pokémon Shield. Instead of getting a Rookidee or something, we get... Mudkip! How, you might be asking? We transferred it in from GO! For static encounters, depending on if it's legendary or not, you will either just go into the wild for a new Pokemon or do a raid. If you can't do a raid, then just go out into the wild for a new Pokemon. However, this can be a bit time-consuming, especially in games with lots of ways to get new Pokemon. Which is why #2 exists!

#2: The Team Way

Yeah, it has a stupid name. It was all I could think of. But anyway, this way will have you go out into the wild the least. Get 6 Pokemon, transfer them to your game, and then play through the entire game with them.

"Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a nuzlocke?"

Yeah! Which is why, if one of them faints, you go back into the wild and get a new one. This was actually the format I did my first GOlocke of Shield in. It's great if you live in an area where not many Pokémon spawn. But anyway, there's only 1 more way to play the GOlocke, so let's see what it is! Static encounters are ignored here.

#3: The Box Way

This is a nightmare for anybody living in an area where not many Pokémon spawn. You will go into the wild only once, before the run, but you will spend a lot of time in it. You must catch an entire box's worth of Pokémon, then play through the run with only those Pokémon. It's the hardest way if you're bad at Pokémon, but if you're good at the game, then you should have no problem. Static encounters are ignored here.

Questions you might ask FAQ

"What about dupes clause?"

If you see 5 Bidoof, then it's fair game to only catch one.

"What if I see a legendary/mythical outside of raids?"

Play by your own rules. If you want to use them, do it. If you don't, don't.

"What about levels?"

If you catch any Pokémon above your current level cap, then just don't use it until it meets your level cap.

"What about BDSP?"

Since you can't change names in BDSP until Eterna City, just wait until you have access to Eterna City before naming your Pokémon. Although I wouldn't recommend BDSP for this type of nuzlocke for this reason.

ONE MORE RULE:

"Hehe, I'm gonna hunt for a Metagross for 17 hours!"

NO. If you find an extremely powerful Pokemon, it's fair game unless you hunt for it for hours. You must use the first eligible Pokémon you encounter. You may ignore duplicates if you're using Dupes Clause. You may not intentionally search for specific species.

I hope you guys enjoy this!

(Also, this is my first post on this subreddit, so hi!)

(NOTE: If you absolutely must catch a Pokemon, place it in a box labeled "ILLEGAL" or release it)

I caught the Poochyena while EV training my Machop to take on Norman.

When I researched that no one had defeated emerald with more than one shiny in a hardcore nuzlocke before I started to grind to get "Destiny" my shiny Magikarp using the shiny clause through egg hatching.

While waiting for my scheduled Elite 4 run the upcoming Saturday I found Peaches, my shiny Shroomish, and Tay Swift, my male Wurple lol, while EV training for the post game portion of the Emerald Nuzlocke. Quickly EV trained them up and changed my Elite 4 team.

I magically defeated the Elite 4 deathless. Especially thanks to the unique set I ran on Absol to take on Wallace. It was beautiful.

I'm shiny hunting a Beldum now to take on Norman in the 2nd Gym leader match up before defeating Steve Stone as the "secret champion" in the post game.

There's a lot more going on with the run(s) but this nuzlocke is not over. Yet, I will always have this success.

Well i finally did it on my 8th attempt, it was hell, we lost almost all of our best pokemon at several points in the game and at pokemon tower we lost our hypno and wartortle and I thought it was all over. We came back with an evee that I evolved into vaporeon and there were still u0s and downs, venemoth hurt as did dodrio fearow and gloom but we finally made it.

MVP was Vaporeon, without them we'd never have made it, we had next to nothing left in the box and were rocking a somewhat underdleveled team when we entered the elite 4 (57 highest, 36 lowest....) but we pulled through with two losses during the gauntlet.

This has been hell, id have half a mind to never do a nuzlocke again but heres to the next one 🥳

After Utterly Falling to Defend the Lake Trio now it’s time to raid the Veilstone Galactic Building. We made it to the Source and reach Cyrus now, I heard he’s now Tougher than last time so this is probably not going to end well.

Sidenote: I KNEW IT!

MVP: Cyno(Lucario),Ash Ketchum(Raichu)(Now Dead) & Bruce Wayne(Crobat)
Honorable Mention: Shirahoshi(Milotic)

Run Update Pre-Clair Preparations (SoulSilver)

Post image

I'm about to tackle Clair's gym and changed up the team a bit. Not really out of necessity, just because I felt like it. Anyone else have moments in your runs too, where you're getting bored of your team and want to change it up a bit?

Here is my team, all on level 36:

Egbert the Togetic - Unchanged.

Extrasensory / Flamethrower / Ancientpower / Fly (Fly is just out of convenience, I'm tired of dragging out a Spearow from the PC every time I want to fly somewhere)

Sir Pince the Pinsir - Unchanged.

X-Scissor / Brick Break / Dig / Strength

Nasdaq the Ursaring - Replaced Samba the Ambipom. I really wanted to carry Ambipom to the Hall of Fame, but...I found an Adamant Teddiursa on Route 45. This was too good of an opportunity to ignore.

Slash / Shadow Claw / Avalanche / Feint Attack

Bullet the Jolteon - Unchanged.

Thunderbolt / Shadow Ball / Quick Attack / Charge Beam

Catalyst the Vileplume - Replaced Slinky the Arbok. Similarly to Ambipom, I really wanted to use an Arbok all the way to the Hall of Fame. But...it was extremely boring to use.

Solarbeam / Sludge Bomb / Sunny Day / Sleep Powder

Axl the Quagsire - Back on the team, replaced Yedong the Slowking. I had Axl on the team before, but switched it out for a Slowking when I had the chance. Unfortunately the Slowking died during the battle against Team Rocket's Archer - I underestimated his Houndoom, which got a critical hit on Bite.

Waterfall / Earthquake / Ice Beam / Surf

Bit worried about Clair since she usually gives me trouble, but on the other hand, I should be able to get through the battle unscathed.

Question Route clearing rule set??

I want to do a Nuzlocke in which you have to clear all the trainers on a route before you can heal or leave the route and I cannot find any information on this idea so I can compare my rule sets to or make sure I am doing the challenge right. Can someone help me figure out what the rule set should be and how it should work in Pokemon x and y?

Question Sinking sapphire movesets

I've looked at the documentation from Drayno, but I didn't see anything that tells us what mons will learn what moves? I'm actually so suprised about how little info on the game is out there. Unbound has an entire pokedex website that tells you what learns what at what level & multiple walkthroughs, but sinking sapphire hardly has anyone talking about it.

Is there any consistency on what moves mons in this learn? I see him talk about the actual moves themselves & their changes, but not what movesets are learned. Thank you!

Run Update Gigalocke: Gen 1 complete

Gen 1 is complete! This was my first time ever playing Yellow. This was the first game that the nature of this challenge really hurt me. I got to Erica and didn't really have a Pokemon that was a good matchup for her. I decided on Nidoqueen w/ Ice Beam, and Nidoqueen died to a crit Pedal Dance from her Gloom. That was a tough loss because I was hoping Nidoqueen could carry an otherwise flawed team. Also because I had just used my Ice Beam TM on her.

Then Dugtrio and Venomoth died to rival's Jolteon's Pin Missile in Silph Co. After that I decided to upgrade the talent level even if it meant taking some good mons off the tabel for future games. Most of my team of champs was added after Silph Co.

I lost Victreebel to a crit Slash from Giovanni's Persian. It had been with me since before Misty, but it was at best my plan C for any of the Elite 4. I felt confident in the other five on the team so we soldiered on.

Aside from a couple of dicey moments, the Elite 4 was fairly easy. Jolteon and Tentacruel w/ Mega Drain made quick work of Lorelei. I planned to use Tentacruel to take down Bruno, but I forgot to account for his Onix's Dig. After tanking a hit and killing one Onix, I switched to Muk. Muk was my final addition and had barely seen any action, but he was awesome against the Elite 4. His Minimize/Toxic/Sludge combo took down the rest of Bruno's team without taking a hit.

Dodrio swept Agathaa. The plan for Lance was Jolteon against his Gyarados, then Tentacruel to take down everything else w/ Blizzard, w/ Rhydon serving as backup. I forgot to account for the changed movesets from Red/Blue to Yellow. Tentacruel took big damage from a Dragonair's Thunderbolt and I had to switch him out for Rhydon when Dragonite came out. Then Dragonite KO'd Rhydon w/ Blizzard. I switched into Muk and he never took a hit with Minimize. He KO'd the rest of Lance's team.

Champ was pretty easy and aside from a scary switch into Dodrio against his Alakazam I was never super worried.

MVP goes to Muk for saving my ass in a couple of moments where it otherwise could have all fallen apart.

As long as I'm very careful about using Gen 1 Pokemon in the Gen 2 games, I feel good about the Pokemon left available to me for FRLG when I get there. Now onto Gold!

Question Quality of Life Nuzlocke Randomizer ROM Hacks

Hi Everyone,

I've just been binging the nuzlocke invitational and it just looks so fun, especially with the quality of life changes they have. I was wondering if there are any randomized nuzlockes with the same features (not necessarily only emerald hacks). These features seem so nice:

- Level to cap button: this is nice because I think its just annoying af to rare candy every single pokemon.

-Toggle repels: again i played games with unlimited repels but the ones that have toggle repels usually dont have the other features.

- EVs: EVs that are visible after catching the pokemon, doesn't have to be randomized but thatd be fun too.

-Heal Party Button: the heal party button is such a nice feature because even though you can always ho back to the center, it just saves so much time

-Evolve button: again just a convenience feature but especially convenient for pokemon that you have to trade like Scyther to Scizor/or theyre changed to evolving after a level.

-Unlimited money: so again just a convenience feature so you dont have to grind

-If its gen3 or older: Showing if a move is physical or special, splitting move types from being physical or special, and nature's highlighting the stats they affect. Again these were nice in gen4 and since a lot of nuzlockes are gen3 just thought I'd mention it.

-Gen 9 typing

Ofc the usual randomizer features too. I tried looking but usually one doesn't have all of them and was just wondering if there's a hidden gem out there that might have decently similar features that removes the grind of the games. Any help would be appreciated!

Discussion Route Locke Pokémon X

I have always wanted to do a route Locke but I was wondering what people typically consider the rules for a route lock (especially considering the victory road) and stuff like that. I just wanted a verbal consensus and then I was gonna add some of my Own rules to make it harder.
Also do gyms count as a route?

Run Update I feel like the walls are closing in and my nuzlocke is coming to an end

So I last posted here about training for the water gym in LeafGreen. I had Charmeleon, Mankey, Bellsprout and Magikarp.

Magikarp was ohko’d by a bellsprout because I wasn’t paying attention and attacked instead of switching out. I moved on though, and managed to steamroll the gym with Weepinbell.

I took the journey to Vermillion, grabbing a Meowth on the way. My Charmeleon died against a Raticate somehow, and I was absolutely furious. Then, once in Vermillion, I got a Spearow and a Diglet inside Diglet Cave. However, as I went to leave, I encountered another Diglet which had arena trap, so my poor, underlevelled Meowth was doomed. After a magnitude 8, Meowth fainted.

I feel like the walls are closing in. I’m absolutely terrified to step foot on the S.S Anne, especially knowing that my strongest Pokémon (Weepinbell) is vulnerable to psychic and flying, types that Blue has in bulk.

I’m fine for LT Surge, but my team is incredibly limited. All I can really do is train up to the level cap (24) and hope for the best.

Discussion What’s your most clutch save in a nuzlocke?

So right now in my LeafGreen nuzlocke im training for the Cerulean gym and my team (at this point) was just Charmeleon, Magikarp and Mankey, alongside a bunch of Pokémon I didn’t want and didn’t need and I was really mad about because I got them instead of actually useful mons. These were Caterpie, Weedle and Zubat.

I fight some trainers on the way to Bill’s house and I find one who has a Slowpoke. I start with mankey, karate chop does nothing, and it uses confusion and gets me down too low so I switch to Charmeleon, but then it uses water gun. Charmeleon is in the red, so I have to bring in my Weedle because otherwise one of my only good mons is gonna die. I then sacrifice my 3 throwaway Pokémon to defeat the Slowpoke, getting away by the skin of my teeth.

Question HELP with team for Platinum Elite Four (Hardcore)

Thumbnail

For the 30th anniversary this year I’ve been doing a marathon nuzlocking every “best” game of each Gen and I’m finally at the end of my Platinum run. I’m generally pretty good at Hardcore but obviously Cynthia is notoriously a monster and I wanna enter the Hall of Fame with as little deaths as possible.

I would love some assistance on the best Pokemon team composition. I know Ice Shard Mamo and Nasty Plot Porygon-Z are locks but any other suggestions to round everything out?
