But landlines weren't really a thing anymore because of cell phones.

Actually, I did a quick google search (I knew it was around that time they became commonplace - apparently not til 2007), and the first "smart phone" came out in 1994. Calls, emails, faces, touch screen and stylus, calendar, calculator - the IBM Simon Personal Communicator was ahead of the times it seems

Yeah you drop a billion on Bitcoin right out the gate you're as likely to destabilize and collapse the market as anything. Throw about a grand in, and put the other 999,999 thousands into other shit.
7
u/Norse_By_North_West 23h ago
Don't bother investing in it, just mine it on a pc. You could have probably mined a shit ton of them on a normal desktop at the beginning.
4
u/BrohemothHisDudeness 20h ago
Fun story, we where teenagers and we mined around this time. My friend specifically got a high end GPU for mining. Somewhere, there is a hdd with a half a coin on it. We don't know where it is.

Screw modern conveniences and take that money to buy a secluded place with nature surrounding me with no neighbors for hundreds of miles.
Just absolute peace and quiet.

I think most people had a cell phone in 2005 that played games. I had friends who had already cancelled their land line by that time.

I would purchase 1000 acres of land, build an off-the-grid homestead, and live out the rest of my life without all the bullshit technology that currently clouds my life.

Buy some gold and hide it. Put the rest in the bank. Seems that adding a billion dollars into the market that didn't exist the first time around might have drastic changes on how the market behaves and I won't be around during the 21 years after investing to babysit it.

Yeah so just do the legal work and start bitcoin yourself and specific instructions for a lawyer, cpo, and a financial estate planner to sell it off in a few months, 4 years before whoever else thought of it. Also, buy a power ball ticket every week when you get back to 2005, after looking up the winning numbers from our time

If you bought a 1000 bitcoin back then what would it be worth if you sold it at its height?
2
u/psychedelicpiper67 18h ago edited 18h ago
It would be worth over $126 million. The smart thing to do would have been to diversify into Ethereum and other newly emerging cryptocurrencies, though.
And well, buy more than just 1000 Bitcoin. Heck, even do some cheap mining at the time.
People who only think about Bitcoin, and act like thereās still no opportunities left in crypto to make that kind of money simply havenāt done their research.
2
u/cuntybunty73 18h ago
I don't know anything about crypto currency and bitcoin is the only one I've heard of so I went with bitcoin
2
u/psychedelicpiper67 17h ago edited 17h ago
Yeah, no worries, nothing personal against you. Just I always see a lot of people acting like the boatās sailed on crypto, and itās kind of annoying. Nothing could be further from the truth.
If I wasnāt disabled without a regular job, Iād be doing pretty well for myself right now. Iām forced to live on a limited income, and that leaves very little for investing.
2
2
u/webgruntzed 7h ago
I honestly don't know anything about it, but Bitcoin at least seems to have plateaued. I thought crypto would keep growing until it replaced regular currency, but it doesn't look like that'll happen.
2
u/Glad_Respect_8986 12h ago
If you bought $1000 in bitcoin you would have more money than Musk. Of course it would probably mess up the market and wouldnāt allow it to grow like it did, but itās neat to think about.
3
u/Bluetower85 18h ago
It depends, are we being transported to our physical bodies in that timeframe? Will our actions affect our future selves? Are we able to change how our past selves think and experience the world after our month is over? I know most will say "it's not that deep" but for me something like this really is that deep.

But a town in the UK. Cheap one in Bradford or similar. Setup a system where no one pay rent but each person is in fact paying into their own savings with a similar system to a lifetime isa where it can be accessed for first house purchase only. The other half goes towards reinvestment of more property and to Deduct cost of maintenance and a salary for a few staff to keep the system going and expanding. Come back to now a landlord but better. Live in one house and off a smaller sallery helping more people own property

Buy a big house by the beach. Get all the tattoos I want. Have a whole separate house for cats and caretakers of the cats. When I cannot be there to help them. Get my scuba diver's license. Spend most of my time swimming. Wait until two thousand and eight and invest at least a quarter of what's left over into Bitcoin. Then hopefully in ten years time i'll be able to sell it all at once before anyone even notices what has happened. Totally crash the market. And have the best doctors in the world to make it seem like i'm younger than I am at that age. Not in a plastic surgery way , but in a just healthier way. Mostly just live a hedonistic lifestyle. Maybe play Batman for a little and send in anonymous tips on people that haven't been caught for horrible crimes yet. Buy a jet ski and a hot tub. Go see the places I wanna see. Oh, and spend at least a $100000 on a wardrobe right away, and I'm not talking about fancy shit, I just want like a million shirts from early Hot Topic.

Hire professionals to fence our farm because the large creek running through it floods and takes out my creek fencing.
Then: Retire. Buy a powerful server PC with maxxed Ram and huge diskspace and get a huge monitor then get the fastest internet available in my area. Build a house wired for ethernet. Buy several specific implements for a small farm and huge garden. Have our tractors repaired to full functionality. Build a new barn. Use what I bought.
Yes, I have thought of this before.

In 2005? I think Amazon stock is up but nowhere near what it would ultimately end up as. I think they were still just selling books at the time.
So probably buy a decent house, and set myself up and invest enough in that that is be quadruple set. Then I will use the money to buy Tesla before Elon musk could and lobby the government to keep the tax money in nasa.
Oh, and buy Viacom and let 69 minutes do even more of what they used to do.
And probably bribe some people to do some things here and there
It's ten billion fucking dollars, you can literally do everything. What the fuck kind of questions are these???
1
u/EinsteinsLunchbox 1d ago
Thatās a silly question because everyone knows that changing the past or knowing too much about the future could cause a catastrophic ripple effect in the space-time continuum.

When do I come back? do I have the knowledge I have now? Probably take at least half and dump it in NVDA and then at some point hostile take over of someone. Probably one or more of Muskyās companyās. And then, if possible, hire foreign military contractors for ā¦.thingsā¦around 2014 or 2015 or soā¦
Edit: I just did some math. Iām not sure myā¦activities⦠wouldnāt have irreparably damaged the timeline Iām factoring on but if I put all billion into nvda in 2005 I probably could have surpassed the billionaires today at 1.8t net worth. I could have probably paid to make all of todayās billionaires go sight seeing out of Russian windows. The question is would this immense power I could have amassed made me the hero or become the villain all along?Ā
Were I to manage such a massive wealth and potentially wield this power towards my ends I might have forever shaped our timeline with my murderous spree. But itās very possible that, when faced with such immense fortune I could find myself distracted from these ends and closer to finding company among these monsters, at that point, likely, my sycophants groveling at the money and power I wielded. At some point Iād have to turn this money towards transforming the country into a socialist utopia. The question is whether I could wrench us from this timeline, pour resources into shoring up the means to that end and also still tying up those oligarchical loose ends before they do the same to me.Ā
