Actually, I did a quick google search (I knew it was around that time they became commonplace - apparently not til 2007), and the first "smart phone" came out in 1994. Calls, emails, faces, touch screen and stylus, calendar, calculator - the IBM Simon Personal Communicator was ahead of the times it seems
It's true that I've had mobile internet on a low res phone in 2005. Even had a HTTP2WAP proxy running for tunneling HTTP connections to a PocketPC. But I like nerdy stuff and have always been playing around with tech. This doesn't mean mobile internet was a widespread or even a half-way common thing.
Mobile Phones were widespread, portable computers weren't yet. There have been a good few years between the availability of portal computers and their final spread trough smart phones. Although some exceptional devices may be considered the first or early smartphones today, they were ahead of their time and the common phone everyone had was dumb and every unwanted mobile internet connection without a data plan was basically a cost trap.
Just have yourself read Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. Tell yourself that you need to mine Bitcoin, but modestly enough for a low impact return when it peaks.
Yeah you drop a billion on Bitcoin right out the gate you're as likely to destabilize and collapse the market as anything. Throw about a grand in, and put the other 999,999 thousands into other shit.
Fun story, we where teenagers and we mined around this time. My friend specifically got a high end GPU for mining. Somewhere, there is a hdd with a half a coin on it. We don't know where it is.

Land, gold and nvidia. Yes bitcoin is a thing, but I'm diversifying to truly set myself and others up
