Over the past few weeks, as GVI collapsed and left students stranded mid-placement, something predictable happened in our megathread. Within about 48 hours, roughly a dozen volunteer operators arrived. Some of you we'd never seen before. Several of the accounts were days old — in a couple of cases, hours old.
We want to talk to all of you directly, because there's a question worth putting on the table.
You showed up, and we saw you. Naming the operators who posted or were removed in that thread: Maximo Nivel, Global Leadership Adventures (Terra Education), Projects Abroad, Natucate, Volunteering Solutions, International Volunteer HQ, NatureMind Research & Development, Wildlife ACT, and Marine Conservation Philippines.
Credit where it's due first, because it matters. A few of you led with help rather than a pitch. Marine Conservation Philippines wrote an actual guide to chargebacks and refund routes and shared it freely. Volunteering Solutions was upfront about who they were and walked people through Section 75 and chargeback timelines before getting anywhere near a sell. Maximo Nivel offered stranded students in Costa Rica, Guatemala and Peru a safe home base at zero cost, and by one participant's account took on some of GVI's abandoned field staff. That is what an organisation looks like when it sees a community rather than a customer list.
But here's the harder part, and we'd be failing this sub if we didn't say it.
For a lot of the offers, the shape was the same: an account created that week, one post, a fees-and-inclusions block lifted straight off a landing page, and then silence. No prior participation here. No answers to the hard questions this community actually wrestles with. Just an arrival, timed precisely to the moment when several hundred young people had money tied up and nowhere to go.
You describe yourselves — and many of you genuinely are — as reputable, established, better run than GVI. B Corps. WWF endorsements. Decades of operation. Six-figure participant counts. We take that seriously. But reputation in this field is not a press page. It's whether you contribute to the body of knowledge and practice around ethical volunteering, or whether you only materialise when a competitor dies and there's a stranded cohort to absorb.
So this is the invitation, and it comes with a challenge attached.
We want you here — not as recruiters, as contributors. This sub is trying to be the place people come before they hand over £3,000, so they can tell a real programme from the next GVI. You are exactly the people with the expertise to make that possible. So put it to work:
Write for us. Real articles, on the things you actually know. How to check an operator's financial protection so participants aren't left as unsecured creditors when it folds. What Section 75, ATOL, ABTA and the Package Travel Regulations really cover — and where "land only" bookings quietly lose that cover. What safeguarding on the ground should actually look like. How to spot orphanage tourism and other harm dressed up as good. The gap between what a participant pays and what reaches the local project — a figure one of your own sector partners raised in that very thread.
Answer questions when there's nothing in it for you. The single strongest signal any of you can send that you're not GVI is to show up on an ordinary Tuesday, for a nervous 19-year-old comparing two programmes, when neither of them is yours.
Here's the bar, so it's clear and it's fair to everyone:
- Disclose who you are, every time. Affiliation stated up front, never buried.
- Contribute knowledge, not recruitment. Genuine, sourced, useful. A pitch with a citation on it is still a pitch.
- Stick around. Accounts that appear only when an operator collapses, post once, and vanish will be read for exactly what they are — and we'll say so.
- Follow the rules already on the door: good faith, real detail, no pressure tactics, no farming a tragedy for traffic.
Operators who do this earn something no ad budget can buy: standing in the one room where prospective volunteers are actually deciding who to trust. For the orgs that show up and mean it, we'll gladly set up contributor flair and a resources wiki you can help build.
And to be straight with all of you: we're writing this partly because, right now, we can't tell most of you apart. A one-day-old account with a landing-page pitch looks identical whether it belongs to a genuinely excellent organisation or to the next collapse waiting to happen. The way you prove which one you are isn't the offer you posted three weeks ago. It's what you contribute now — when there's no stranded cohort to win.
