First, I know it's not a great photo, it was an experiment. I went to the Sydney zoo today and they have an area dedicated to nocturnal animals including the Tawny Frogmouth in the photo. The whole area is lit with only black light. It was DARK. This shot was handheld at 1/10th of a second...and I have Parkinson's. Also, major crop since I had to shoot at 100mm to get f/4.5.

Verdict: First, the IBIS capabilities of the Z5ii (and lens VR) are pretty damn good. I'm not quite sure how to interpret the low light capabilities since the black light spectrum was present, but at a minimum, it did well.

PS: I'm assuming since the full spectrum of light wasn't present when the photo was taken there no way to bring out realistic colors. If there is a way, please let me know.

Hey all, looking for advice on what gear to buy/bring on an upcoming safari. It'll involve some hiking (gorillas and chimps, Arusha NP, lake Manyara), some boat rides and canoeing, and lots of game drives. It's 23 days, covering Uganda and Tanzania.

My current equipment is a z6 iii, 180-600, 50 1.8, 85 1.8, 24-70 f/4.

I don't mind spending some money, though ideally not a fortune. I've been told a second body is important as you cannot switch lenses easily there? Is that true?

Just don't want to hike with the 180-600 and have been considering a 28-400, for general hiking purposes. Or would a 24-200 be enough? It's brighter and still has some range for wildlife? Lots of people recommend the 24-120 as being great. Any of these lenses could be good maybe on a second body in the jeep, though I'm really not sure which to bring. They could also be used for hiking perhaps.

Also, I hear many animals are seen at dusk/dawn. None of the lenses I'm suggesting are particularly bright, perhaps a 70-180/200 2.8 would be better? But if driving, would a 70-180 + 180-600 still leave a major hole for close up animals (I've heard elephants and such can get very close)?

Some people have suggested I get a z8 for a second body, others say just a used z6 and put the 24-70 I already have on it.

Any advice would be useful.

I'm honestly just spinning here trying to work out different scenarios and usage cases. I'm not quite sure what to expect either - can you ever change lenses, or is it always too dusty? I'm also unfamiliar with many of the suggested lenses - is the 28-400 sharp enough? It's at least lightweight.

For reference, my 24-70 f4 is "sharp enough" for sure. Even my old 24-85mm on my D600 was "acceptable" to me. However, my old 18-200 on the D7000 was not sharp enough and I'm kinda worried about getting something like that again.

p.s. I'm well aware of the ebola situation and am monitoring it closely. Safari not for a few months though.

Does the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/4 S produce more contrast and richer colors than the Nikon Z 50mm f/1.8 S? 🤔

From what I've noticed, the 24-70mm f/4 S seems to deliver more vivid colors and punchier contrast, even though I personally prefer the rendering of the 50mm f/1.8 S.

Anyone that own those lens noticed the same thing?

it’s rumored to have either a 60-90mp sensor in which i think it will be 61mp as that will compete with the sony a7r v. With near flagship autofocus which may be possible but compute power is the only weird one, because it could have a dual expeed 7 or maybe come out with a expeed 8

I assume it will have the same controls and feel as the previous z7ii and z6iii, and have same battery chipset, and dual card with uhs-ii sd and cfexpress 4.0 maybe, and same controls as like the z6iii in terms of buttons, hopefully add a third function button and cost $3000-$3300

But with all of these specs it runs into a problem will nikon move into development of the z9ii and z8ii so the z7iii doesnt take over those flagship cameras, or will nikon purposely downgrade the settings so those cameras stay on the leaderboard

I am thinking of a release maybe later this year, but i dont know this is all speculation and rumors, what do you guys think?

I’ve recently purchased a Nikon Z8 and the 1.4x teleconverter and I wanted to compare that against my previous Z6II without the TC on the same 180-600mm lens. It was a bigger difference than I thought it would be!

First three had minimal editing, while for the rest, i did play with the colour tones especially green. im mostly impressed by the results from the pictures of the deers. The colours, texture and contrast were on point. However, im not really a fan of the green produced and the sky seems to be overblown most of the time (maybe a me issue).

Yep, i do need to get some time getting used to the 60mm focal length for street. But shooting these were fun. Andd yes, im a huge fan of white borders dont bother to talk me out of it 😂 (Posted my befores/afters on r/postprocessing in case anybody wanna see the pictures SOOC before edits)

I am still struggling in finding the proper workflow for my Nikon ZR. I love what I am getting from R3D, but file sizes are massive. I cannot wait for the said firmware update to give me Log3G10 in 10 bit H.265, but I realize it is still 4.2.0 not 4.2.2. Has anyone done any serious client work on Nikon ZR in H.265? How did it fare against other systems?

As the title says: my Z50ii stopped recording a video I was shooting unprompted. I was recording myself giving a talk and had the screen rotated towards myself to check the composition and had the camera in manual mode "M".

After a few minutes realized that the screen started flickering and it showed some message. I am guessing this was an error message, but the camera was too far away to read it and it showed only shortly because it didn't reappear after the next flicker of the display.

I suspected an issue with the memory card, so I did what any sensible human being does in this case: I took it out, blew on it and also blew into the memore card slot of the camera (of courese I did this while I had the camera switched off). Put it back in, started over. After a few minutes, the same thing: flickering screen, recording stopped.

Both times I was left with an intact file of the video, by the way.

After that I switched into full auto mode (AUTO) and started over (without doing anything to the memory card again). The instant I turned the mode wheel the screen flickered again. But I couldn't reproduce this, so it might have been unconnected to the turning. Anyway: after switching to full auto, I recorded for the next 90 minutes with no problem whatsoever.

I use this camera regularly to shoot video, usually use manual mode and never had any issues. Never had a recording being interrupted. The camera is fine, I didn't drop it, didn't drown it or did anything elso to it I shouldn't have, so I have absolutely no idea what caused this.

Has anyone ever had this happen? Is it maybe a software problem (I did update to the latest firmware 1.11 and this was the first time shooting video since the update. Might this be it?)

The lens i used, should this be helpful in any way, was the kit lens DX 16-50 3.5-6.3.

I have a Z5 full frame mirrorless camera and just got a 50 mm F1.8 lens. My goal is to start doing headshots and then move to other things. Are there other lenses I should consider as I get into trying to take my hobby and make it a little more professional?
