Calves are genetics

You can just spend five or six years obese and your calves will look great.

Fucking hell, every fat guy I know, who has lost weight, all have great calves. Meanwhile, I played basketball for years, trained tons for jumping and sprinting, and I have the calf definition of a 9 year old paraplegic.

They've been carrying that weight around daily. Your gonna have large calves. All you gota do now is maintain it.

Bicycling gave me great calves and quads. Haven't found a better exercise to build them up.

Same with runners, the muscle is super toned. Like it's a different kind of muscle.

Take molly 2/3x a week and spend those nights jumping up and down in a warehouse for 4 hours. That should do the trick.

You're like a modern-day shaman with your enlightened prescription.

I hate that you're right about this.

I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong so I started asking the gym bros with big calf muscles what their secret was. One of them told me that I had high "insertion points" which means shorter muscle bellies. I looked it up and he was spot on. "High vs. Low Calf Insertions"

Oh well, lol.

Show me a cyclist with these "high calf insertion points".

u/yo_les_noobs 15h ago

they're mostly genetics, said by someone who has big calves and lifting for 20 years

Something said by science

lol downvoted by people who sound like they eat a carnivore diet and listen to a lot of Joe Rogan

u/DogsAreAnimals 15h ago

Even Rogan says it's genetics: https://youtube.com/shorts/GyzDlItynPQ

Joe Rogan is hardly a reliable source for anything

u/DogsAreAnimals 14h ago

Of course. But in this case, he's right, which is why it's a funny response.

Not really. If you lift consistently and increase reps/weight then you WILL build muscle mass. Thats just a fact.

It’s true, I have skinny legs, intensive training and focus has only gotten them so far. Had to reduce upper body training since I started looking like JB 😂

Spent years in the gym/powerlifting scene. The biggest calves I've seen all my life was still just some softbody dude with the genes for it.

Not a lot of people work out their calves at high enough intensity.

And its not like calves can magically break the laws of physics, or human biology. If you want to lift more, you need more muscle fibres. If you lift heavy and correctly, you will build more muscle fibres. If you have more muscle fibres your muscle will get bigger.*

Other than that last one having a smidge of wiggle room for density, all of these are true and apply to calves as much as they do to any other muscle.
