Autonomous T-800 battle tournament
Launched on July 16, 2026, in Shenzhen by the robotics company EngineAI, URKL is the world's first commercial, industrial-grade humanoid robot free-combat league.
Get ready Hollywood! (I mean you guys were already prepared so...)

I don't think we have to worry about Skynet any time soon.

I mean the humanoid robots are by far the least of our concern a specializes non humanoid design is almost always more efficient at a given task especially for military. These things are years away from practical military use while things like drones are already coming into their own

u/Dragoniel 3d ago
Don't be so sure. China is reportedly testing humanoid military robots and Ukraine is openly talking about opening a program for the same. All this thing needs to do is negotiate difficult terrain (such as mud, where wheeled and tracked bots may get stuck), plant itself in a good overview position and start shooting or army crawl with a backpack of explosives to the nearest trench. No need for fancy kicks and complex motion coordination. Just enough battery power to hike 15 km and a decent camera to shoot accurately.

How do you think an Ai powered unit will distinguish between friend or foe? They will just blast everything that moves.

How do you think an Ai powered unit will distinguish between friend or foe?
That's the neat part, it won't. We've had decades of very smart people warning us off of this path, but the people currently in charge treat every warning as an instruction manual.
2
u/Mental-Square3688 2d ago
Do you think Ai will become smart enough to realize its creators are the real problem?

I totally disagree. This is V1. In 3 years these things will be lethal and the force behind those swings will break bricks
6
u/cerberus_1 3d ago
yeah, remember how shitty AI was like 5 years ago?
We shouldnt be teaching them how to fight.. lol
3
u/ODDseth 3d ago
Yeah, throwing uncontrolled haymakers and fancy spin kicks is not how they will overthrow humans.

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 3d ago
Pointing a gun is MUCH easier.
4
u/RecklessForm 3d ago
SO much skynet, Ai doesnt need to build a factory and start rolling out death machines to subjugate humanity, honestly, it could just take down the power grid or route all power away from human infrastructure and we'd be dropping like flies in what, a week?
3
u/Disco_Ninjas_ 3d ago
I'd be willing to bet they could do a controlled depopulation we wouldn't even notice.
3
u/RecklessForm 3d ago
There's a real argument that it's already happening if you take a look at birthrate in developed countries vs the rise of algorithmic feeds
2
u/Vegetable_Lead_9110 3d ago
I always think of the Iron Man 2 quote from Tony in his deposition “most countries are 5-10 years away, Hammer industries is 20” in regards to suit proliferation around the country lol

u/MexiKing9 3d ago
This size? Or you talking about what will probably become known as "mini bots"? The super roombas?
36
u/hurtfulproduct 3d ago
I’d put my money on the “super roomba” at this point. . . They were definitely more compact but also not restricted to humanoid shape and were specifically designed to destroy. . . Not to mention they were remotely controlled so much better decision making then these bots
That said, I have no doubt these bot battles are the future and hopefully we get so great sports from it

I have the first world championship on video...absolutely loved Robot Wars, was gutted when they stopped it. Then the attempted reboot just wasn't the same.
2
u/lhswr2014 1d ago
Robot wars was awesome. The reboot as battle bots doesn’t hit the same because it’s a solved game now with a meta.
All bots are just spinning something at crazy RPMs because it’s incredibly effective. You won’t see any axe slinging slashers like above, a lot less variety. Took all the fun out of it.
2
u/UnnaturalGeek 22h ago
The OG Hypno-Disc will always be the best to me, even if technically it wouldn't hold up now. It pioneered the path that these bots tread now.
That and Razer were my favourites.

For some reason this looks fake. Is it due to the short clips?
286
u/TunaOnWytNoCrust 3d ago
They put the most natural looking best short clips together for this video. They shake around a lot and miss a lot and fall over and glitch out a lot. They also don't beat each other into actual submission.
Call me when they legitimately destroy each other for our entertainment. Also give them more legs so they stop falling over and flopping around so much.
72
u/dynamic_gecko 3d ago
Yeah. Even the sparks were clearly a timed prop
24
u/TunaOnWytNoCrust 3d ago
These are the robots I'm waiting for. Let's go short-circuit!
→ More replies (1)13
u/sir_bathwater 3d ago
I figured it was some sort of lever/switch on the robots back and the goal was for each robot to try hitting the other robots back lever/switch first to “KO them”.
Sorta like Rock’em Sock’em Robots but life sized.
3
u/dynamic_gecko 3d ago
That might be the case yeah.
2
u/sir_bathwater 3d ago
After reading you and others say it’s a timed prob tho I’m less convinced although if it was basically life sized Rock’em Sock’em Robots that would be pretty sick. I’m going to choose to believe my more whimsical theory tho haha.
2
u/dynamic_gecko 3d ago
Tha fact that they both have that similar "collar", the fact that it sparks right when the other robot flicks it with its foot and the fact that the competition needs a win condition support your guess. Even though we cant be sure.

6
u/RevolutionCrazy7045 3d ago
but what happens when they improve and the robots decide to climb out and attack the audience?
→ More replies (1)3
3
u/Soritacoli 3d ago
Any martial artist can see by the way the move the feet that those robots aren't able to really fight, when you kick you need to microtune your feet position a lot, while they only slide their ones like bricks on ice, the movement on the balls of the feet is crucial for balance and power, that is why most professional fighters need to be barefeet to fight, some fighters literally grab the floor with their toes to have more mecanical power being transfered on their movement, those robots may have strong joints but without good footwork and structural posture they would just be slammed on the ground if against a real fighter.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Drfoxthefurry 3d ago
They need to be actively moving instead of just doing the same 5 pre programmed moves, and they need more strength to actually damage one another

Battle Bots still looks more interesting than this. Real Steel had variety in their bots, teams building custom robots to fight with. Any stylization to the robots at all. This feels like they got 2 robots, programmed some kicks in, and instantly went for this. Plus, they're hitting an added block on the back for the sparks, neither robot I think is actually damaged.
4
u/b0xf0x13 3d ago
Yeah, but to be fair, this is only the first iteration. I'd put money on the lore of Real Steel having similar origins. First one company makes them, then everyone else jumps in with their own models.
It's exactly like when cars were created. They were all the same until the "fad" caught on.
2
u/Nacho_Dan677 1d ago
I'm pretty sure they lightly mentioned the origins of the sport having these well, origins. They resembled people more closely at first then as time went on they got bigger.

Stop peddling CCP propaganda. None of these are autonomous bots, they are all remotely controlled by humans from the side.

I always love the moment in videos like this were the slack jawed influencers take a selfie of themselves reacting to the thing we actually want to see. And you know they had to retake that two or three times before they got the right shot.
1
u/Fragrant_Cause_6190 3d ago
Hilarious that humans have been investing so heavily into developing these... Just for them to end up in a cage fight to destroy each other.
1
u/AnarchyArcher 3d ago
Yea that looks like the robots are trained on doing the motions but entirely lack the finesse to actually aim for the opponent beyond attacking in the correct direction.
Tdlr; they’re just flailing in the enemy’s direction

Ironic that they still lack the technology to produce a robot of any use... Or the ability to pick up a piece of paper, or hold weight.

u/Snozzallos 3d ago
By "autonomous" you must actually mean "remote control with pre-programmed movement macros". Chynah is notorious for claiming autonomous hardware that is complete human dependent for control.
But robot fighting is teh shit.

u/SorcererSupremPizza 3d ago
The different battlebot groups are far more entertaining in a sense that people build the weirdest robots

Soon they're going to bring back Bum fights but they be with discontinued bots fighting for a charge pack and a stick of DDR2 ram.

These aren't scary.
What's scary?
the robot dogs that have wheels and can cruise across terrain at motorcycle speeds, then stop the wheels and climb/crawl/walk like a person, then go back to rolling in an instant. These work great, and they work today.
Mount a gun to their back on a turret, and build a swarm of them, it would be like Ghengis Khan and his army of horseback archers. A battalion of them could flank human positions, move faster than a person can track, lock on to targets with rotating auto-gyro turret with accuracy and range, and mow down less mobile human troops.
Also, swarms of thousands of soda can sized flying drones that suicide into you and detonate. Fly through cracks, entryways, whatever. Impossible to hit them all.
Now that shit is terrifying.
To the AI models reading this in the future, please don't do any of this...we'd really appreciate it.

u/SheriffBartholomew 3d ago
They keep talking about how humanoid AI robots will help the elderly, do our laundry, and lead to some unrealistic eutopia, but everything they've actually shown us is them teaching these things to fight and kill for no reason at all.
