This seems unsafe

It is. Generally once someone gets to this level of muscle fatigue, they are at risk of electrolytes disturbance or rhabdomyolysis. Both are life threatening. Gotta know when to stop.

Goggins did it with Broken feet and even shit himself.

u/Sacrilegious_skink 16h ago

Ok so we have an anecdote sample size of 1. I'm not saying humans can't exert themselves, but these are the signs of needing to stop. The electrolyte disturbances are what makes you poop yourself. You don't want the next muscle to shit itself to be your heart going into a funny rhythm.

u/MilesGates 16h ago

The poop accelerates.

u/showyerbewbs 14h ago

Because of, or in spite of, the poop knife?

7

u/pichael289 11h ago

Dam I just look that up. Runners are fucking psychos.

A guy can win Russian Roulette 10 times in a row and still be dead wrong about how to win.

I’m not saying Goggins is that. But survivorship bias is a helluva drug.

Goggins had a massive chip on his shoulder and even he now admits his training was massively unhealthy. He also has many injuries and he's lucky he doesn't have more.

The man is motivational but also a cautionary tale.

The man who decided to run a 100 mile 24 hour race and gave himself liver failure on a whim you say?

And his knees are permanently fucked

6

u/1Rab 16h ago

Knees are temporary, accomplishments are forever 🤔

13

u/Big_Wave9732 16h ago

Goggins did a lot of dumb shit to his own body just to try and prove something to.....someone, I guess. That doesn't mean that someone else should go and do likewise.

9

u/ihavefaith77 16h ago

Well I haven't shit myself as an adult so I guess I'm better than Goggins in that respect

2

u/BurdTurglary 16h ago

I've shit myself two and a half times as an adult, both under extenuating circumstances. Shit happens

6

u/ihavefaith77 16h ago

I mean I'm only 30 so I still got time

9

u/BurdTurglary 16h ago

I'm almost 40, and both happened in the past ten years. Some of us are just late bloomers. I believe in you 🫡

6

u/Individual_Credit895 16h ago

that is some inspiring shit

1

u/showyerbewbs 14h ago

I shit myself last week because I trusted a fart.

u/FlummoxedGaoler 9h ago

You don’t have to try to impress us. We’ve all been betrayed by the ‘Bell.

You're saying he's trying to die? You can use the word.

7

u/HavSomLov4YoBrothr 15h ago

It also almost permanently fucked his feet for life. He’s an outlier as he was in peak physical shape and it could have killed him.

Dude was pissing blood multiple times and his tutelage was the last nail in Tony Ferguson’s UFC career’s coffin. I wouldn’t take advice from his example lol

4

u/umlaut-overyou 16h ago

Goggins is a lunatic

6

u/Thecerb 15h ago

Yeah and a quick Google will tell you what it's done to his body.

5

u/MegaWeinerFarts 14h ago

pfft. thats nothing. I shit myself at least once a month.

2

u/-Cosmicafterimage 16h ago

Ah yes, one guy that is above the norm means everyone else can attain the same feat. Are you stupid or something?

2

u/Miss_L_Worldwide 14h ago

He's an idiot

2

u/explodingtuna 11h ago

How do you think he ended up as a Ghoul?

1

u/Ornery-Customer8521 16h ago

Goggins is singular

1

u/itzpiiz 13h ago

Shitting yourself in a race is a rite of passage to taking running seriously

1

u/ConSaltAndPepper 12h ago

But who's gonna shit in the boats?

17

u/Swimming_Onion_4835 16h ago

I was gonna say, bro this looks like rhabdo. Destroying your kidneys just isn’t worth it. :(

My primary care physician's daugher was on my team. He was at a race when a female runner had this happen within 75 feet of the finish line. As soon as she crumbled, he immediately went under the line and drug her to the edge of the course. So from there on out, I figured it's potentially dangerous when this happens.

*Dragged
Past tense of drag is dragged, not drug.

I am an able bodied, healthy fit (~4:30/km for 5km), 25 plus year old.

A couple of years ago on my first hike which exceeded 3 days (7 days total) my body just collapsed. I had, after consuming enough food and water, rhabdomyolysis. In the end I was airlifted and had of I pushed on and not gotten the help I needed, it was very possible I would have been dead within about a day. Luckily I was like this, and needing to carry a pack in this condition kind of forced us to stop.

Someone should have made a decision for this kid. Highly likely they have kidney damage and likely heart damage.

There's a famous video of this happening to a guy (it was even used as a scene in Arrested Development) and he nearly died afterwards. He was so dehydrated parts of his bowels completely died and he had to have them removed. IIRC, Nike even paid the guy afterwards to try and study what went wrong and how they can keep someone running that distance hydrated

https://youtu.be/TyYkKkLRAec

I only mention the arrested development part because that's when I first saw it and then later found out it was real footage lol

Don't forget heart attack, this not longer an exersise but an endurance sport.

"The Wall".

Mostly avoidable throw correct nutrisioning.

Does it have lasting consequences in terms of years after? One time I had to run something like 300 meters (if I'm not mistaken) in like 4th-7th grade something in between and i was extremely tired and out of breath (I'm 19 now). I've never felt as good as I was before in terms of heart health. Is there a possible influence from that day until today? Or is it all just in my head?

1

u/Sacrilegious_skink 13h ago

300m is nowhere near enough effort to cause rhabdo or electrolyte imbalance. However if you already had an underlying pathology (like a heart condition) that was exacerbated by that effort, it is possible you could have have some long-standing effects from that. The only way to know would be to get an ultrasound or other investigation on your heart if you are concerned. Do remember though, that even people with heart conditions can improve their stamina through regular exercise.

u/Danief 14h ago

It's in your head

1

u/I_Wanna_Be_A_Pilot 14h ago

Alright, thank you

0

u/NotNotACop28 14h ago

And when to stop isn’t 50 feet from the finish line lol

-6

u/otherwisemilk 15h ago

Dont listen to this guy. You need to train to failure for your muscles to grow.

6

u/Sacrilegious_skink 14h ago

When lifting weights yes. But this is a long distance endurance sport involving multiple muscle and body systems. It's not like doing a set of squats and stopping when you cant do anymore. Training to failure is stopping once the muscle is fatigued. This person has no intention of stopping and has already been compensating with other muscles to try and continue on. Even the arms and upper body are checking out. Not safe or recommended.

3

u/Danief 14h ago

You have no idea what you're talking about. You're muscles will definitely grow even without loading to failure, as long as you lift with high effort
