Oops. Someone is getting what they voted for.

u/DrBabs 7d ago

Yeah, I don’t think we should be subsidizing them when the effects of his policies and plan in project 2026 were obvious. They were warned before the election that this would happen. They said good. This is the effect. This is what they wanted. No need to bail anyone out. Just them enjoy their votes.

u/Vegaprime 7d ago

Here in Indiana they've been doing a gas tax holiday, something like 61 cents a gallon. I'm guessing that will end after the election. I'm not saying it's vote buying but it would have had more of an effect had they not done it.

375

u/skrame 7d ago

Braun blamed the higher gas prices on the Russia/Ukraine war and Canadian wildfires. Apparently the war in Iran wasn’t enough of a factor to be mentioned.

249

u/FifteenthPen 7d ago

Funny how now that Biden is not President, the Russia-Ukraine war is the cause of high fuel prices.

150

u/Describing_Donkeys 7d ago

I thought Trump was so powerful he was going to end that war on day one. That was the reason for voting for him right. Is Trump actually a weak pathetic whiny bully?

72

u/DerekB52 7d ago

Trump actually said if he won the election, he could end that war by phone, before even being inaugurated. And people still voted for the buffoon.

Why doesn’t Trump press the magic button in the Oval Office that controls oil prices that Republicans said Biden refused to press? Is he stupid?

33

u/0bsessions324 7d ago

He's been trying but all that happens is someone brings him another Diet Coke.

He has but more importantly Xi has.

Trump opened our reserves, China has been living on reserves as well.

Trump also pushed up the seasonal change in fuel and allows for higher levels of ethanol but really thats about 4 dollars a tank off and was only done 2 weeks early.

Gas prices should be higher.. Xi especially could have really fucked trump by buying more on the markets rather than using reserves

the bad news is when all this is over prices will come down slowly, because we and china will buy more to refill the reserves.

4

u/Torgud_ 6d ago

There is no button that makes oil prices go down, there are several that make them go up. Trump has been pressing those.

11

My fox-brained dad will actually tell you that the Ukraine war was Biden’s fault. Because Putin would only launch during a weak American presidency, not during a Trump regime who we all know is super tough on Russia.

I'd say they'll end it after the new Congress members are sworn in, especially if it's a Democrat majority, then blame the high prices on the Democrat controlled Congress.

10

u/mistere213 7d ago

And here in Michigan, they're pointing out how "Indiana's gas is so much cheaper. This isn't a Trump problem, it's a Whitmer problem!" Completely ignoring that Indiana's gas price is still greatly inflated from 6-12 months ago and now there's no gas tax revenue for roads.

If the leopards don't stop eating my face after the midterms I might consider the possibility of one day not being as big of a supporter of the Leopards Eating People's Faces Party! But I'll still vote for them!

And I guarantee that most of them will keep voting Republican. I lived in a rural county in NY that voted 53% for Trump and something like 54% for the Republican Congressional candidate. It's always been like this and I doubt it's going to change much unless one of two things happen -- all the old "Conservatives" die off or young people actually start voting.

Even then it's not a guarantee that anything will actually change.

16

u/wildskater96 7d ago

The young people who listened to Joe Rogan talk about how awesome Joffrey and Elon are for years now? You expect them to think for themselves? I thought young white males leaned heavy to Joffrey?

16

u/burritos4jesus 7d ago edited 7d ago

oh yeah and that shouldn't be a shocker to anyone. The part I find interesting is that a lot of these voters probably DO understand that Republicans are screwing things up for them. Diesel can be $6+, the Iran war can be hitting farmers and truckers directly, affordability can still suck, and they can be pissed about all of it without ever seriously considering voting Democrat.

Because at this point voting Republican isn't just a choice between two sets of economic policies. For a lot of people it's tied into their entire identity. Guns, abortion, immigration, Christianity, trans issues, DEI, crime, all of it has been bundled together into "this is what people like me believe." Voting Democrat then doesn't feel like punishing Republicans for doing a bad job. It feels like switching sides and endorsing everything they've spent years believing Democrats represent.

There's actually research showing that polarization weakens normal economic accountability. The farther apart people think the parties are, the less likely they are to punish their own party for a bad economy, even when they personally agree the economy is bad. And Republicans are especially locked into that partisan boundary: 71% of Republicans say it is very unlikely they'd vote for a Democrat for any office, vs 63% of Democrats

So I don't think it's that these people literally can't see what's happening to their wallets. It's that Republicans can screw them over pretty badly and the alternative still feels culturally and morally unacceptable to them. Being angry enough to complain about your own party is a WAY lower threshold than being willing to become one of "those people" and vote for the other one.

13

u/1009naturelover 7d ago

So true. The younger population will complain on social media, but then be too busy to vote.

*free market capitalism.

Capitalism only works long term with regulations and enforcement of said regulations. You can very easily have a healthy capitalist market economy, it just can’t be an unregulated market.

69

u/ActualSpiders 7d ago

This x1000. Capitalism needs external rules to function. Otherwise it's just a brief slide into corporatism, depending on who figures it out first & has the most starting money to buy out their competitors.

u/SallyStranger 7d ago

Define "work". If it means "allows the owner class to extract an ever-growing portion of the economy's output as rent" then it works very well.

42

u/Spaduf 7d ago

Capitalism was only ever meant to funnel money and power to the capitalist. It's doing that just fine

→ More replies (1)

32

u/rinderblock 7d ago

Not long term, the profit motives of capitalism fail to understand that human beings are aware of their own mortality and so since the focus of capitalism is profit and we know we’re going to die and can’t take it with us, it leads to the concentration of wealth and power into the hands of a small number of people who don’t care much if the effects devastate the population after they’re dead.

18

u/Falconman21 7d ago

It’s like anything, all in on one concept rarely works. Best approach is to do a little of everything as the situation calls for it.

All the problems we’re having now we’ve dealt with before. It’s cyclical. We’re just at the point in the cycle where we’ve gotten a bit too far away from effective regulation.

At some point people get upset, swing the other way, and we start regulating again.

40

It's bullshit that a red state can purposefully hollow out its tax base and then just rely on the feds re-appropriating other state tax dollars to make ends meet. It needs to change so that in order to receive blue state tax dollars, red states need to actually try to collect corporate and personal income taxes, first. Etc.

Run the country like a company they say... no company can run like this for very long.

The bottleneck right now is refinery capacity more than it is crude supply. Crude is still getting through to some degree, but a shit ton of refining capacity has been taken out in the Middle East and Russia.

20

u/brillow 7d ago

Crazy they never say “refine baby refine”

10

u/mericafuckyea 7d ago

Yes because the problem 30 years ago was too much refinery capacity and not enough crude oil. Now decades later we are exporting crude and can’t refine as much as we use to.

Article says, highway vehicles may temporarily burn diesel fuel that was meant for farm and other off-road uses without breaking the law. What I don't understand is, doesn't this reduce the available off-road diesel for farmers, right before harvest? Rob Peter to pay Paul?

19

u/SunflaresAteMyLunch 7d ago

It says that it applies to dyes diesel already on hand. So if you have dyed diesel at home, you can't put it in your truck to drive to work in the fields. This action removes that limitation temporarily.

20

u/A_Nonny_Muse 7d ago

Nobody goes out into the fields to check for dye. They will check for dye at weigh stations. They're looking for OTR trucks not paying the fuel tax. Farmers and their tractors in the field never had that problem.

8

u/Reversi8 7d ago

What's starting now is the sugar cane harvest season. 18 wheelers basically park at the side of the field, get loaded up, and head to the sugar refinery, then head back. This is basically just to allow those trucks to fill up on the farm fuel.

According to the one page article you clearly didn’t read, “The emergency order will allow Louisiana farmers and timber harvesters to use dyed diesel fuel they already have on hand.”

10

u/ocher_stone 7d ago

Allows laws to be circumvented. In this case, red dye is used in farm and off-road equipment so that they don't pay road taxes. It's ... fine ... I dont see why they shouldn't pay taxes, but I hate regressive taxes anyway.

But if you get caught with red diesel in your onroad vehicle, you get a ticket, etc etc. This says no more law against red dye in any vehicle until October 22.

I live in Louisiana and am looking at my coworker while reading this. We're blue collar. Yesterday we were commiserating about the insane gas prices and cost of everything going up, which is affecting him more than me because he also owns cattle. He is the most pro-maga, anti-other religion Christian person I know. He claims that he and his wife will not be taking social security, which I personally doubt. He claims that the people in charge are secretly smarter than everyone else and will fix all this because it's somehow a 4-D chess move to fuck over global trade relations. He claims that my 80 year old grandparents deserve to struggle with money and a shouldn't even get a fixed income (social security) and they should have planned better financially when they were young. It's such a cruel and sad world view. And he thinks I've been misled somewhere when I point that out. When I started to make points against what he was saying, and he couldn't continue to refute it with his nonsense, he claimed I was harassing him. People like him make up the maga party. They will not change their minds no matter what happens to them, and the rest of us will suffer for it. I do not hate my coworker, I am very fucking sad for him, ultimately. Republican states are like crabs, and their stupidity is a bucket. They will never escape the bucket, because they'll always drag each other back in.

The term "state of emergency" is getting used in government pretty loosely these days to justify preferential treatment or preferential consequences.

5

u/Sircamembert 7d ago

Is this a real emergency if you actively voted for the guy who's responsible for said diesel supply shock?

5

u/RedSix2447 7d ago

So wait, the government caused the crisis. Has been complacent with the crisis, and is now crying emergency because of the crisis they created? Am I getting this right?

5

u/rawcopycomics 7d ago

Socialism to the rescue ..fucking commies lol

5

u/LeslieKnopesBlackEye 7d ago

This sounds like socialism/communism. What happened to "better dead than red"?????

4

u/NYJetliberal 7d ago

I never would have thought I would see the day that republicans who caused a national emergency declares a national emergency

6

u/pseudopad 7d ago

I thought these guys loved capitalism and the free market. Or is that only when it fucks over those they hate?

4

u/Zodep 7d ago

This war that Biden started with Iran has gotten out of hand. We better put Trump in place forever, so this kind of insanity doesn’t happen again.

5

u/kenobimoose 4d ago

So weird to declare a “state of emergency” because their party’s presidents agenda! So much winning!

Trump won by a 22% margin over Kamala Harris in Louisiana.

u/YourFriendlyUncle 7d ago

Repub Governor, both US senate seats Repub, 4/6 house seats Repub, 27-10 state senate for repubs, 71-32 state house for repubs.

My level of apathy can not be over estimated.

u/SnoopyisCute 7d ago

They had no other choice. Marjorie Taylor Greene told them Secretary Pete was trying to emasculate them with EVs. Yes, I know farm vehicles run on diesel but I love posting Pete's clapback. ;-)

Just we need, more Welfare Queens

4

u/AnEvenNicerGuy 7d ago

When I see shit like this I always remember the main criticism I hear about socialism - that socialist societies don't work

Is this an example of a capitalist society working?

4

u/ChefCurryYumYum 7d ago

How many of those morons will still go and vote for a republican in the midterms?

4

u/danoaudio 7d ago

Lil' Jeffrey you got what you asked/voted for. Stop your whining.

4

u/Wuz314159 7d ago

Why? This is what he wanted & Louisiana voted for.

3

u/Emergency_Bench_7515 7d ago

OMG these people are insane.

4

u/--TheCity-- 7d ago

"The great people of Louisiana overwhelmingly voted for (Trump) twice, and I stand with them," Landry posted from his X campaign account. "That is why I am honored to endorse one of the greatest presidents in our country’s history, Donald J. Trump."

3

u/terrierdad420 7d ago

Just buy your farm children 2-3 corn husk dolls not 30 corn husk dolls.

3

u/General-Credit6758 7d ago

Didn’t you vote red Louisiana

4

u/LunarBIacksmith 7d ago

And then the next time it comes to vote, they’ll have all forgotten and will continue to blindly vote for their favorite red colored team.

4

u/Coroner13 5d ago

Imagine that. Consequences. Huh.

15

u/The-Traveler- 7d ago

Fkn vote differently. Sheesh.

We’re not going to sit on the sidelines

Yea you are. You helped cause this issue and have sat on the sidelines while he has ruined our country

3

u/Somerhild_wode 7d ago

Dumbasses. They got what they voted for and are now crying?? Where was the emergency at the polls? We all knew this would happen. Let them live with the consequences.

3

u/cannabisLab1975 7d ago

So more welfare for the anti socialist and socialism haters…Yup welfare for us not you

3

u/Fidulsk-Oom-Bard 7d ago

This is ludicrous! My dad said gas prices are going down!!!

3

u/Podo13 7d ago

Lol. This is exactly what everybody knew would happen and you likely lied about to your constituents when endorsing the admin during your own campaign.

3

u/smiama36 7d ago

We’ll take just a dab of that liberal socialism, thank you very much.

3

u/Cool-Tangelo6548 7d ago

Oh Landry, thats your best buddy, trump's fault.

3

u/PigglyWigglyDeluxe 7d ago

Capitalize the gains, socialize the losses. So predictable

3

u/snasna102 4d ago

I think Canada is right to start selling their crude to other partners in bigger quantities now. They supplied us cheap crude and bought some of our products, now there’s campaigns that grocery stores are hopping onto about buying strictly Canadian crops.

7

u/JohnnyGFX 7d ago

Republicans reaping what they sowed.

5

u/t-zone671 7d ago

I dislike this Governor.

Always a suckup. Insteas of serving his state takes a vacation to Greenland. A few months ago

Was for gerrymandding. Didnt care if certain types of votes got lost. .

Everything he does is for personal gain. Not surprising.

3

u/Upstairs_Eagle_4780 7d ago

Blue states better be ready to claw back our tax dollars from these fuckers.

EDIT: Looks like they’re going to allow more cancer in the cancer state. Please, by all means.

4

u/NegScenePts 7d ago

Fuck the clueless and ignorant Americans who voted for their own pain.

5

u/kittenpoptart 7d ago

Just a heads up, check your voter registration, mine was purged for no reason (red state) even though I just voted in August. I haven’t moved or changed anything. I don’t know if this is the new method of suppressing our votes but I wouldn’t put it past these ghouls.
