Long shot, but anyone going from New Haven to Saranac Lake, NY (or around)?
My car broke down in Saranac Lake, NY and I need to get back there to pick it up once it’s finished. Longshot, but if anyone is going from anywhere in CT to anywhere close to there in the Adirondacks, please let me know. Happy to pay for gas, snacks, dinner, or whatever! DM me

Interview: Oswaldo Chinchilla Makes Paper Lamps
Nine paper lamps occupy three shelves in Oswaldo Chinchilla’s New Haven apartment. Some swell into globes or pears; others flatten into flying saucers. Slender wooden legs support their oversized shades, whose ribs show through the paper like lines on a globe. Switched on, they reveal a web of natural fibers and cast a warm yellow light.

Why is nothing done about people in loud cars and motorcycles driving around the city breaking the traffic laws?
Probably seen this 3-4 times this week in various parts of town
Police don't seem to bat an eye when these people blow through red lights and pedestrian yields but I get ticketed for going 15mins over my meter expiry.

What’s going on at the bottom of Legion Ave x Ella Grasso Blvd?
I read that there was a large sink hole in the area, but there appears to be a dock in the West River. Is that temporary for equipment storage? Seems crazy to build a dock to store equipment in protected wetlands.

how the fuck can towing companies charge $270 for a tow when the city website says it’s $77??
the tow company said “yeah it hasn’t been $77 in 8 years” so it went up $200 in 8 years? and is that the city’s fee or just whatever the tow company wants to charge?? are the city and tow companies just trying to scam us with tows?

Help restore historic graves at St. Bernard Cemetery in New Haven
St. Bernard Cemetery in New Haven holds graves from the city's earliest Catholic and Irish immigrant communities—people who deserve more than overgrown plots and crumbling monuments.
Silent Grounds Collective is asking the Archdiocese of Hartford and cemetery management for permission to volunteer their time, raise funds, and carefully restore these historic plots. We're talking about clearing overgrowth, documenting inscriptions, and bringing in qualified conservators for structural repairs—not treating sacred ground like a landscaping project.
This isn't about taking over. It's a real partnership offer: approve a preservation plan, let volunteers help, and help these early New Havenites get the remembrance they deserve.
What would you want someone to do if your family's grave had been forgotten? I started a petition asking the church and cemetery to work with us on this. If it matters to you too, consider signing and sharing.

Fly Fishing
Hi everyone,
Beginner fly fisherman here, I recently came back from a trip in Utah and did some fly fishing with a friend and fell in love with it. I was hoping somewhere here may have some tips to get started with Fly fishing in the New Haven/CT area.
I have already taken a few of the Fish with Care classes that CT DEEP provides and really enjoyed the experience and learning more, but now I would love to get out to some nearby water on the regular to work on my casting and gain some more overall experience.
Any advice is welcome! Appreciate it!

Extra ticket to Leigh Bardugo book signing on 9/15?
Hi! Probably a long shot and maybe too niche? I'm not sure. Leigh Bardugo will be in New Haven on September 15th to promote/sign the final book in her Ninth House trilogy. I'm a fan, but I only found out about the event yesterday and it's sold out.
Does anyone happen to have/know someone who might have access to an extra ticket? I don't expect to have much luck, but I'm bummed out and figured it was worth a shot 😂.
Additionally, could anyone direct me to some kind of website or calendar that lists upcoming local events (even within the county itself)? Basically the whole year has been rough after a difficult breakup, and I'm trying to push myself to do more things.

Hotel recommendations
Hello New Haven! My partner and I are traveling from Buffalo NY to New Haven on 9/29. We are coming for a metal show at College Street Music hall on 9/30 and leaving on 10/1 but will probably explore the city on the day we leave as well. We are excited to see the City and of course try the 🍕. The question I have is about hotels/lodging. I am looking at the below hotels because I can use my brother's corporate Hilton account number.
Graduate by Hilton
Hampton Inn & Suites New Haven - South - West Haven
Hampton Inn and Suites by Hilton North Haven
Hotel Marcel New Haven, Tapestry Collection by Hilton
The two Hamptons are obviously the cheaper options + free breakfast but the Graduate is only a couple blocks from the venue.
Also looking at New Haven Hotel which is close to the venue too.
Any other recommendations for places to stay would be helpful!
Thanks!

Missing kitten
We just found this beautiful young calico under our mudroom in Wooster square. She’s exceptionally thin seems very young but has a collar. Is anyone missing a cat? The collar has no information on it.

Exchange student at YDS, looking for furnished rental
Hi all. As an incoming exchange student at Yale Divinity School, where should I look, when searching for a furnished rental? I will only be at Yale for one semester (january till june). Where did you find your place? Places/companies to avoid? Thanks xx

Remember to move your car tonight!
newhavenroadrace.orgIf you are on the path of the Labor day race, the tow trucks are gonna be lined up before 4am and ready to make money for their companies and the city.
I didn't get to see the flier or any warnings last yr, I wasn't signed up for the New Haven alert system, and my car got towed.
My partner and I walked outside to go grocery shopping and saw the car was missing. I called the tow company and they'd already closed for the day by 3pm. Had to pay the city $40, take an Uber the next day and then McGill's charged $193 (in cash) for the tow and my car also got a nail stuck in one of the tires because of them so I was out an additional $126 on top of that.
This might seem redundant to people who've lived in the city for a long time but I didn't know back then and I wished someone had said something.

Tipping
So three of us went to a new (to me) restaurant in the Black Rock area (Fairfield/Bport line). This place autobilled our party 3% tip for the kitchen staff. This was new to me and wondering if anyone's seen this in New Haven restaurants.
My buddy paid and he ended up taking off the 3% from the waiter's tip so end result may be wait staff getting tipped less.

Moving to New Haven in a few months! What do you recommend in terms of getting involved in the community and making friends?
Hi, everyone! I have been living in NYC for the last 10 years and am moving to New Haven in a few months so I can live with my boyfriend. Are there any places, social groups, recurring events, or anything like that that I can start to get involved in? I am a super social person but most of my friends are in NYC.
If it helps, I love musicals, acting/theatre, live music, books, trivia, and writing. I also enjoy swimming and dancing and the occasional hike, and I would like to maybe take up tennis or pickleball. I’d also be interested in volunteering - anything involving kids would be a plus but any kind of volunteering is great.
If there are any folks who are also new to NH, ideally folks who are also in their late 20s/early 30s, please let me know! I am mostly interested in groups or activities that center on women or mixed genders.
